There are around 9,000 Jews in Iran now. There were 100,000 before the revolution. It is not a happy place for Jews, though they are tolerated. Jews remain only because Iran, unlike most of the Arab world, did not expel its population.

Case was famous for getting pissed and into punchups. It's why Paisley sold him.

TBF you're also missing out a succession of Rolls Royce defenders from that list – Thompson, Hansen, Lawrenson. And I think you're underrating Hughes, who was really a half-back – a "CDM", as the youth say – who converted to centre back, and was important going forward, not just hoofing it out. But I know what you mean about it being less than the sum of its parts. Though those were the days when there were very few undoubted superstars, so every British team had its fair share of journeyman. Combine that with players not leaving relegated clubs (Brooking staying at West Ham when he was the heart of the England midfield!), and it meant the good British players were spread a lot more widely.

Season perspectives

First time poster, but longtime fan! I remember the great team with the four sets of twins – the Morgans, the Ferdinands, the Allens and who can forget Gerry and Trevor Francis! I can even remember when Matrade Loftus Road was called the Kiyan Prince Foundation Stadium!

Anyway, some fans complain that the ground isn't all it could be, but my info is that the club are right on top of it. Some people might think it's controversial, but I think their plan – it's only a plan! Don't get your knickers in a twist! – to move the ground to Guildford is inspired. Great transport links, and a real football town with close links to London W12!

What's really exciting, though, is the youth programme. The info I'm getting is that Nourry, love him or hate him, has really worked on getting that up and running, and we're really seeing the results now. There are four management consultants doing internships right now, and the talk is three of them could turn pro in the CEO's office.

James Walbourne is an incredible guitarist. Currently with the Pretenders, but has worked with so many people in so many styles. His side project His Lordship are well worth listening to.

I saw the Blasters in 1985, opening for Jason and the Scorchers. When they came on and opened with Marie, Marie, I was outraged that they were doing a Shakin' Stevens song. Didn't realise they'd written it. They were so good.

He is Chelsea. I interviewed him last year, and asked about that famous photo that seems to show him at a Chelsea v QPR game. It was him, and he always supported Chelsea.

We started getting successful at set pieces last season, by playing to Dunne at the near post, for flick ons that either created chances or went in. The same thing we did with Edwards against Derby.

Top 10 Championship players 24/25
at 17:40 17 Feb 2025

Former FourFourTwo editor here explaining why it is so early to be nominating …

They have to cover all 92 clubs. That means getting the stuff in from 92 fans, some of whom will take ages to respond. They have to tabulate it, edit the copy where applicable, do the picture research, lay it all out, proof it and get it to the printers. And also format it for the web. At the same time as doing the normal magazines. Because it's a special it will likely go to print before the mag it goes out with – I don't know how much earlier, but it will be a few weeks, probably. The mag itself goes to print two or three weeks before it is in the shops. So in order to actually get the thing done, they need to leave a couple of months to actually pull it all together.

In music writing, we start getting asked for our albums of the year in September.

Both of you wear good earplugs. Near the front it will be too loud for you to actually hear the chord changes without them. Seriously.

Kelman?
at 23:26 1 Feb 2025

I went to see Orient today. They didn't play well – lost at home to Stockport. And Kelman did not look good. Seemed slow and fat. Didn't dominate in the air. Had a couple of chances. His best moment was, I suspect, entirely by accident. We're not getting any kind of fee for him.

Stick. Clearly a talented player. Can't believe anyone would let him go from this squad.

It's good that the club have reconfigured "threadbare squad" as "creating pathways". Genius.

Russell Martin
at 16:32 12 Dec 2024

It was Clive's theory about Kompany at Burnley, which I think holds water there, given he was never going to stay long. He just wanted a stepping stone. I don't think it's necessarily the case with everyone, though. I think it's more that we've entered an age of managers as coaching brands, instead of personality brands – now they're selling their theories rather than their charisma. Lots and lots of them are all about "never sacrificing our principles" now, so they kind of have to stick by them or accept you're another hack manager who'll do anything to scrape mid-table. (Even Ainsworth was a brand in his own way. He certainly didn't have a Plan B.)

And it's not as though Russell Martin is in with the slightest shot at Liverpool/Arsenal/City/Chelsea/United or even Spurs/Villa/Newcastle. And certainly the managers taking the same line lower down the leagues aren't in any danger of attracting attention from further up unless they're actually winning games, as well as encouraging a 38-pass move between the goalie and two central defenders within their own box from every goal kick.

Patient stabilised but home win still proves elusive - Report
at 13:07 4 Nov 2024

I know we're all down on Madsen and Celar, but I thought both were genuinely good on Saturday. Celar missed the chance, but he seemed to me to have a good all round game, and Madsen did some lovely things, especially in close quarters and with long passing.

As a journalist, who deals a lot with PRs, reasons MC shouldn't do events like this (from the club's point of view)
1/ He has said uncomfortable things in postmatch interviews. Fu*k knows what he might say with people who aren't following the normal interview rules.
2/ People who are not following normal interview rules will also ask the kind of questions that might irritate him ie Why are you playing out from the back instead of booting it long like what I like? You don't want a ratty manager.
3/ You don't want hostages to fortune, like "I will get us in the play offs." Or even worse, "If they'd bought me x player, I would guarantee you the play offs."
4/ One problem this club has had for years is different camps pursuing different agendas and putting out different messages – academy v first team; Les v owners; Les v management. Just putting one person forward at least means one message.
5/ Lots of the questions that would be aimed at MC - those regarding recruitment and contracts etc - are better aimed at CN anyway.

Reasons he should
1/ Honestly, it looks shit if he doesn't.
2/ QPR is already developing a bit of a paranoid PR problem.
And those are both increasingly serious.
