From my view in W I thought Smyth threw himself to the ground, having seen the replay there is some contact with the knee but I still think it was not a pen, would be given under VAR no doubt but you would be disappointed if that was against us.

Also on Hayden, I thought he was excellent a real key component for the win

I would not necessarily read it that way, but Cook has been his best form for the last 18 months in the last 5 or 6 games, as has Dunne at centre back. Would be very hard to justify dropping either at the moment.

4-2-3-1 today Vale was excellent, Kone looked like the player we first saw in September wide players if anything were the weak link. Stick a fit Chair wide left and this team will be cooking

What we have seen over this season is leadership from him, constantly talking, demanding from and off his team mates. I've said before one of the key differences is where he is being played he has the game in front of him and his brain and reading of the game gives him that extra yard, his skills give him that extra time. His defensive work is getting better and better whether it be nicking balls, or blocks and clearances in the box.

Definitely the best CM we have had since Faurlin

I thought we were excellent today and especially through the spine of the team. The centre backs dominated their forward line, Madsen and Hayden dominated the midfield and Kone and Vale were both excellent as well. Both full backs did very well.

I thought Bennie did really well myself, I think there is a touch of the Ainsworths about him, not the most skilful, but skilful enough, not the fastest but fast enough, and what he lacks in those areas he makes up for in hard work, a great attitude, and I thought he made some really good runs in behind second half that really helped us as a team.

Hard to pick a motm probably give it to Kone because he took a big step forward in his development wit that performance today. Though Madsen is turning in 7/8/9 out of 10 performances every week, and his skill was the difference today for both goals

The 3 sides of a match thread at Oxford

Watched on TV

The conditions were crazy not seen anything like it for years, wind blowing deadballs a metre of where they were placed. Crosses that were whipped deviating by 5 -10 metres in the in the air.

The wind seemed to be blowing directly from goal to another.

I can't see why anyone would be surprised the game was how it was. The two most expensive players on the pitch Madsen and Dembele (along with Smyth) seemed to be the only ones that could control it, Madsen the only one who could pass it. Defenders struggled to read the flight in the air. Keepers kicking from keeper to keeper with the wind or barely getting it over the half way line against it.

If you ever played any sport to any decent level you know you players and teams are at their best when you are not having to think about technicalities, ball control, your swing in golf, bowling action or position on the crease in Cricket. Thinking about technical things such as strength or lightness of touch or pass, means you are always a split second or so slower making decisions and choices leads to poorer performances and decision making which ends up being rushed.

My point is no alternative formations or game plans would have made much of a difference, even if you played short and on the floor the conditions would have had an impact there.

If ever there was a case for a winter break last night made it very strongly, benefited no one that game.

Poor half with the ball, midfield poor right across the 4, Kolli needs to drop back into the 10. As good as Hayden was against wet spam he has been as poor here today. Mad Ben's going to get sent off 2nd half guaranteed especially with this ref. Walsh doing well

January transfer rumours

I think Kone is a bit up and down, and I think we all assumed he had pace but he is a Harry Kane type of striker not pacey, decent finisher decent hold up play. But he is improving and has at times struggled to adjust to the pace of the game, but when he has played as the 9 he has produced.

I thought we were multi club already, doesn't Ruben have stakes in Los Angeles FC who in turn have a stake in Grasshopper. Zurich

West hams ground....

Not as bad as I thought it would be because we were behind the goals and the view is comparable to most large grounds but the security checks / stewarding seemed well over the top. Would hate to be at the sides (where I am at lR) because it's miles away from the pitch (even the benches are a full penalty box away from the touchline.

Missed the memo on DLR station being closer to the away end

Who Knew Walsh Was So Good?
at 21:56 11 Jan 2026

Was clearly nervy to start, but tbf those Bowen inswinging corners were world class, Kone kept one out first half that was going straight in.

Was exactly the game he needed to have, I think he would benefit from a league 1 loan though rather than being thrown back in

Fourth Round Here We Come Match Thread
at 21:51 11 Jan 2026

Was at the ground, pretty decent atmosphere where I was in the lower tier next to the Wet Spam fans, limbs for the equaliser.

Performance wise I thought we did pretty well. Standouts for me were Dunne, Madsen and Kolli (I've read posts critical of the last two and I have no idea what you were seeing, some of Madsen's defensive work, positioning and reading of the game was excellent.

I dont think they laid a glove on us in the first 30 minutes. Bowen clearly best player on the pitch and those corners he was taking were a different class. We chose to play with a mid block and not press too high and most of the time we were in any danger was in transition. Cook who was generally great made a bad mistake for their goal.

Second half we were far more aggressive and the goal was coming. Had an Arsenal fan. next to me who had taken a mates ticket kept going on about how good he thought Kolli was. Great goal, Kone had a much better half once he had gotten up to the pace of the game. Smyth had a very decent half as well (if only he could make the right final pass)

Gotta say though Walsh made a couple of fantastic saves to keep us in the game and scores even. So well done to him he had a really good game.

Our fitness though is shocking. Ok we lost Saito to another Hammy, but our general fitness is miles off what it should be at this time of the year. We were totally spent at 80 minutes. They've had a weak recovery from the last game, we should be able to get through 90 minutes and the first half was not played at any pace at all.

Could see why Adamson has been no where near the team, need to file that one away with Santos for bad gambles, looks non league quality.

Quite a lot on the socials from West Ham fans saying they should try and buy Dunne.

Have quite a few West Ham mates. They are a very poor premiership team a top 6 championship team maybe and only if they keep Bowen.

All in all can't be too unhappy, Ref was a total homer!

I think JCS is a write off now, Cook gone in the summer and struggling at the moment. Mad Ben has nailed down right back. 18 months of Ronnie Beckenbauer before hopefully sold on for a healthy wedge gives enough time to try and get Smith and Akindeleni cooked nicely maybe with a league 1 loan. Ronnie can play anywhere across the back 4 or CDM If we had bought a RB and CB for similar money we would not be complaining so makes a lot of sense to me

Burrel out until March
at 13:56 9 Jan 2026

I think it is absolutely the case in the modern game, in the championship, where the game is about high intensity press, lots of fast explosive running plus contact etc that Hamstring injuries particularly are on the rise. I dont think its unique to us and I dont think its a coincidence that we've had them clustered at the start of the season and at the end of a pretty brutal run of fixtures on a cabbage patch pitch. When the game was slower and more twisty and turny you had more ACL,MCL Groin and Ankle ligaments injuries.

I dont think the slow burn has particularly helped us because we have stamina issues but at the same time and I don't think its the answer to the problem

Varane was fine with that side of the game today, it was in possession he was so ponderous and things kept breaking down because he missed the passing opportunity or took two many touches so we kept going backwards.

I though Madsen out Bannoned Bannon today certainly for the first 60 minutes, but with Bannon you always expect he is going to pop out of nowhere and score world or open us up with a single pass

Just back, as others said strange atmosphere, Gotta feel for the Wednesday fans because no heart from their team other than Bannon. Delighted for Rayan, see on the thread he was getting some stick but I think he did pretty well all things considering literally his first touch put Saito through on goal, not everything came off but he gave us more control upfront. Players were all struggling a bit. Madsen was excellent for 50 minutes and then looked done. Mbengue had a very strange game and wanted to be off after 70 mins. Dembele was hugely frustrating. Kone really struggled to control the ball. Field did well when came on Varane had a really poor half on the ball before the injury.

Saito's best game for some time.

Injuries were clearly playing on the minds of the players 4 in a day is really not good at all
