25/26 Squad
at 13:14 27 Apr 2025

For me whatever happens in the playoffs I thank the squad needs to be revamped for next season. Promotion will mean that McBride,Hogan, Burger, Kelly, TA , Mitchell (who I have been a cheerleader for) and all the loanees will need to go. I could make a case for keeping just Rodney, has some decent league experience, the same for EEL and East. Gilmour could still play a part, while Beckwith is still developing, as is Edward and I think Barlow can play a level above. Gordon and TAR would be unlucky but I wouldn’t keep them. However if we stayed in the National League they can stay., but the others in the first paragraph need to go. A squad that went close the season before rarely do the job the next season.

Full credit to the team, management, and core fans for standing strong after the cup exit. It would have been easy to fold after that experience, especially with so many young players in the squad. I guess they had the bottle required yesterday.
Predicted a the start of the season Rodney would be our top scorer this season, but never imagined what that journey would look like it did. He seems re galvanised and on current form can trouble any defence in this league. The really hard yards for this season are about to begin, but we must mind our business first. Looking at the table it would be sinful not to start the playoffs with a home tie.
What we can’t afford to do is start trying to manage who we get in that first playoff game. Living in Southend I would prefer them not to be in the mix come next Saturday evening but if we play them so be it, as the league has shown we are the better side.
Three possible cup finals on the horizon. After all the criticism of the team and management the excitement is about to build. Give it some lads.

Unless Edwards is knacked and rested I’m not sure how he isn’t picked over Ayinde, who has shown flashes but to me he’s best performances were at Ebbsfleet and Worthing. Two of the poorer sides we have faced. His stock is declining in my eyes. Come on lad stick it to me and have your best game in a Dale shirt.
We can win this, if we turn up with intent.

I’d pick Halifax over ourselves. You need to score to progress in the playoffs. We have a much better record than them. Also we have done the double over Gateshead.
Just on his post match interview I hadn’t realised JM had played with JT at both Bury and Tranmere as well as ourselves. That’s a lot of bonding.

This podcast from during lockdown popped up on my You Tube feed this morning. Recorded during lockdown with three ex pros it was a real absorbing watch / listen. Can recommend it to anyone who hasn’t already seen it. You’ll need to set two hours by to see it all.

I remember seeing a picture of Joe taken during the treatment of his second diagnosis for cancer, stripped of any muscle definition and thought how is he even going to get fit enough to lead a normal life. But within months he was back in a Rochdale shirt and scoring that goal. What a man.
Last night I saw his wife’s tribute on Sky sports and was deeply touched that having lost a son and a husband in a short space of time she was able to find the strength let alone the fine words to mark his passing. What a women.
She mentioned Joe wanted an “open” funeral and I can imagine there will be a mass of people attending. Joe was a very rare gem indeed and we are all poorer for his passing
RIP Joe

Some how to myself it seemed to be fated that we should win today. After the news of Joe Thompson’s I can’t look beyond the symbolism of today’s victory.

Southend have got it all to do now. 4 points plus goal difference down with only 4 games to play. Alty play us at home which could be a last throw of the dice for them so that will be tough. Looking up not down a home playoff spot is within our grasp.

The team must be mentally shredded after the experiences of the last few days, and unfortunately the management appear to also be to scarred to pick them up.
On Saturday I was looking at the bigger picture of what’s important in life and I’m in the same place today. Which suggests to me I’ve been to invested in the Dale recently. Can I step back a little, I think so. For those who still have resilience under the bonnet and have the stomach to fight for whatever your stance is I applaud you.
These buggers will probably win their next 3 and draw me straight back in.

CRICKET
at 19:09 7 Apr 2025

Fine day’s cricket today, with the result still in the balance well into the last session. Have to say I am a fan of George Balderson. Was an opening batsman at one stage and that experience paid off today in the last 6 overs.
Pleased that we had a go at the run chase for a while until we needed to be more circumspect. Overall a decent start.

Big Game on Tuesday
at 21:13 6 Apr 2025

Have to say I was worried about that interview. We all manage people differently but I would have been inclined to say to the players who wants to put this behind them asap by coming in for light training and assessment of Sutton on Sunday morning. It’s gone so let’s file it in the past and used the frustration positively this week. But that wasn’t the vibe he gave off.
Expect on Tuesday we will either thump them or get thumped. Really hoping for the former.

Of course I’m disappointed, but is it massive? Odd I know but I can’t go into a rant or punch the wall with frustration. There are more important things than football. Not saying others shouldn’t vent their spleen if that what they need to do.
Onto Wednesday, with games running out for teams for the teams around us. Time for the players to get rid of their frustration and deliver some points.

You could have a thread on its own about what the line up on Saturday might be. Would imagine you could get twenty different variations and still not hit on Jim’s starting eleven.

Get where you’re coming from and accept the comment about the right amount of adrenaline, because that in itself can lead to bad decisions/actions.
Regardless of your occupation tiredness does impact the speed and quality of decisions. That’s why when I have been hospitalised I always hoped the junior doctor attending me was at the start rather than the end of their shift.

From Forest Green down every team will have had similar results. The further down you go the longer the list get. Close results are what gets the blood pumping.
Jim was wrong to say the pitch was a cow field, cows would have starved to death. It did look like it had been heavily grazed by horses and had the poorest covering, not bare patches, I have seem for years. Poor from the ground staff. But no excuses should be used on that score, they both had to play on it.
Off the highlights only thought that was decent last night. Which Rodney turns up for a game is anyone’s guess, last night it was the decent one. There were definitely soon tired minds towards the end because there were some really bad decisions being made in the last few minutes. That team was missing numerous starters and none of us would have picked it before. On balance it was a decent point, even given the circumstances of the equaliser.
Not coming up on Saturday cos I ain’t seem them win when I have attended this season. That in my mind might help the result.

A win tonight will give a boost to the fans. Knowing that whatever the other results on Saturday we will still be in the playoffs will calm some nerves.
Interesting that both sides have semi finals on Saturday. Can’t help wondering if some players will be wary of picking up injuries. But the respective league positions should make for a committed game. Although I would take anything but a loss as a reasonable outcome.
Given the number of changes on Saturday and the knocks I have no idea what the team selection will look like. These are the circumstances when the owners need to get a return on their investment in the squad.
Let’s have it lads.

Would you take out of the cup & play offs if it meant McNulty being sacked?
at 14:11 30 Mar 2025

The average tenure of a manager can’t be much more than 18 months. We have had multiple times more failed managerial appointments than successful ones. So if we deem JM a failure on what he has achieved so far, then the odds are against us finding a better one. It doesn’t scream out to would be managers that we are a great opportunity when a play off finish and semi of a trophy is considered justification for sacking a manager.
Living in the south east I have heard numerous West Ham fans bemoaning that this or that manager doesn’t play “the West Ham way”, e.g Moyes. I think we are getting like those fans ,a bit precious about the what is an acceptable level of entertainment we are seeing. JM is not blinkered, he would never have made it as a player, if he disagreed with any manager whose style he didn’t like. Remember KH bought him to the club, he wasn’t a bad judge for most of his career.

Well Aldershot were tailor made for us. You can see why they have both scored and conceded over 60 goals this season. Not many more teams, if any, will be so front foot against us in the remainder of the season.
Rodders is the epitome of the inconsistency the team has been this season. There are games where his seem to have his mojo working, like this and FGR away, and others where he is completely off the pace. Nice to see another corner routine pay off for the first. Beckwith has played so many games this season it is no surprise he is struggling with an injury. Although I quite like Kingdon as an option. EEL is a decent replacement for Hogan if necessary. I think yesterday will have demonstrated to the fans that our fortunes do not lie in Bird wellbeing.
The maths is starting to get difficult for the teams below us, they are starting to run out of games.

Both Gordon and Rodney start. JM’s phrase “out for sometime”, which he used for both these players and Bird is interesting. I expected at the time that both the former would be out for most of the remainder of the season but here we are, both back. Does give hope that Bird will also be back for at least a few games this season.
Bird is not the best all and end all for this team, but he should provide a spur to the other forwards to get their acts together.
We can deffo, beat these today, will we? This season it’s a coin toss as to what sort of performance the supporters will see. C’mon lads give us the heads’up.

Interesting selection. Would have preferred Barlow and Allarakhia to start, but let’s see. Hoping it turns into an inspired team selection by the manager. A win would certainly calm the supporters nerves and result in a match thread of no more than 3 pages.
