I lost my Dad a couple of years back too and his story is very similar to yours. Born and bred in Acton and supporting the R'rs through the sixties and beyond. I'm 56 and he took me to my first game in 1975. Oh they were the days.
It does get easier and you have so many wonderful memories to cherish. They will make you smile in the tough days / weeks ahead.
And rest assured we will meet them again by the railway track on the other side.
Rest easy Martin.
Take care pal and always around if you want a chat.....
Whilst I still love going back to my West London roots, my family like thousands of others made the move West to the Home Counties in the late seventies, early eighties for a better life. It was probably the best thing they did. Better schools, less crime etc.
My Dad would always shake his head when I took him back to W12 to watch a game. I know nothing stays the same for ever but I think London has definitely lost a lot of its soul over the years which is a shame. Just watch some of the early Minder series to see what West London was like in that period.
I think they call it progress but I'm not so sure and reading that statistic on Shepherd's Bush is very sad.
Maybe it's the lack of communication from the club that has made me feel like this.
Not renewed our season tickets yet either - I am even thinking do I bother this year and just pick and chose games instead especially with all those horrible 12.30pm kick offs.
It's horrible mate we become so attached to our furry friends. As you say no matter what else is going on in our lives they are always there for us pure and utter unconditional love.
We have had cats and dogs and saying goodbye is the worst thing in the world. Just remember you gave them a wonderful life and created a unbreakable bond.
However life goes on and maybe don't leave it to long before you get another pet. We said goodbye to our dog just before Christmas and whilst I wanted a break my wife went to the rescue and got us another dog very quickly. It certainly helped with the healing process and now I am inseparable again with my new mate.
It's crazy really how can you love something so much when the vast majority of the time they make you angry and ruin your weekends. My wife always checks the full time scores so she knows what type of mood we will be in when we return home from a game.
Okay so here goes:
1) My family are all from West London and were season ticket holders. My first game with my Dad was in 1975.
2) Going with my children now it allows me to spend quality time with them especially pre match food (normally pie, mash & liquor). The pre match drinks with other members of my family and friends. Buying a akutrs from Dave.
3) The location and "old skool" stadium - I bloody love the place.
4) Those rare moments of joy that other fans (of big clubs) just wouldn't appreciate.
5) And finally a shout out to this site and Clive's writing too. We are very lucky to have such talent as one of our own.
It's been my church for over 50 years now - Whatever else has gone on in my life that lovely little blue oasis set right in the heart of West London has always been there for me.
The Sweeney and Minder remain my favourite TV shows of all time and always watch a rerun when they are on. And who didn't love Terry's on/off girlfriend Debbie.
It was the West London I grew up in - Fantastic casting and screenwriting. Terry was my icon. Plenty of QPR references in both shows.
Boys from the Bush was another show around that time that had QPR as a main feature. The main character was a QPR fan who drank in our much loved Crown and Sceptre before moving to Australia.
Great days indeed sadly now from a much loved bygone era.
Such tragic footage and thoughts are with everyone in Liverpool.
Unfortunately using vehicles to mow down people in densely populated areas has become an increasing threat. I have noticed on rare occasions two police vehicles will park together on SAR towards the junction of Bloemfontein Road to stop any such attack in W12. However this only happens occasionally and SAR is absolutely rammed for about 15 minutes after the game.
We have mentioned on several occasions this is a security weak point and should be addressed for every game.
Brilliant Clive - Always enjoy these write ups and the Patreon discussions behind them. Agree with absolutely everything in your reports. Especially your summary on Paul Smyth. You need to do the dirty work in the formation we play.
Whilst talking formation I would like to see us change more to a 3,5,2 formation in certain games next season. It would certainly help Celar (and Kelman) to have a partner at the top end of the pitch. It would mean that our fancy 10's would have to be on the bench but they could come on and effect games later in the match.
Anyway I've had enough of football and bloody QPR - I'm off to the beach too.
