A long long time ago away at The Dell I was sitting in the front row of the away end down the side when the ball came to me for a Saints throw. I held onto the ball and as Francis Benali who had been kicking lumps out of Trevor Sinclair came to get the ball and at the pinpoint time I throw the ball in his face hitting him straight on the nose. Well all hell broke out the stewards came in looking for me but as I was with about 15 of my mates and we all had had a few they retreated and decided against starting a mini riot.
Two minutes later Trevor ran alongside the touchline saw me and gave a big thumbs up.
Not proud of it but is a story I always like to tell.........
Spot on as always Clive - A very enjoyable report.
Fantastic to see smiling faces again in W12.
I can imagine it's tough getting the vile abuse on social media but I hope you know the 99.9% of your followers and this message board really appreciate your efforts.
Your journalism has a very positive affect on my life in good times and bad.
Our crew have all been saying 3,5,2 for a while now. It would mean binning off the 10's but that is our problem right now we are to easy to play against.
Become more solid and play more direct with two forwards - It might not suit the "game model" but getting your arse handed to you regularly is starting to test the patience of the natives. And FFS stop that ludicrous goal kick routine.
Millwall know how to get points in this league and it isn't fannying about with the ball in our own half.
Thanks Jamie great report. Been to Coventry a few times in recent seasons but no way was I going Saturday. It’s an absolute disgrace the fitness levels of these players compared to other clubs and no way was I going to spend my hard earned watching that shambles.
I very nearly didn’t renew our season tickets this year too and now wish I hadn’t.
Anyway don’t let the numpties grind you down Clive especially on Twitter. Your articles and reports bring so much joy especially in tough times.
So pleased for him - He is a decent manager albeit at a lower level.
Unfortunately we had to many ego's and a poor dressing room when he came to us and perhaps tried to change things to quickly. I am still amazed that Marti managed to turn us around and keep us up.
Will never forget him trying to run of a broken leg for us against Luton.
I think its 20% of the sale not the profit as we allowed Eze to join Palace (which he wanted) even though we had better offers on the table. I believe this clause got the deal over the line.
Love the video and commentary. Great work getting Phil Parkes and Gerry Francis involved and listening to Brain Moore takes me right back to my childhood days.
Kit's good and I'm sure my daughter will fleece me for it in the club shop tomorrow.
Very happy Clive's articles are back from the summer break. One of life's small remaining pleasures is reading these masterpieces in bed and as always this one didn't disappoint.
I have not watched any of the pre season friendlies but am already starting to feel a tad nervous.
I lost my Dad a couple of years back too and his story is very similar to yours. Born and bred in Acton and supporting the R'rs through the sixties and beyond. I'm 56 and he took me to my first game in 1975. Oh they were the days.
It does get easier and you have so many wonderful memories to cherish. They will make you smile in the tough days / weeks ahead.
And rest assured we will meet them again by the railway track on the other side.
Rest easy Martin.
Take care pal and always around if you want a chat.....
Whilst I still love going back to my West London roots, my family like thousands of others made the move West to the Home Counties in the late seventies, early eighties for a better life. It was probably the best thing they did. Better schools, less crime etc.
My Dad would always shake his head when I took him back to W12 to watch a game. I know nothing stays the same for ever but I think London has definitely lost a lot of its soul over the years which is a shame. Just watch some of the early Minder series to see what West London was like in that period.
I think they call it progress but I'm not so sure and reading that statistic on Shepherd's Bush is very sad.
Maybe it's the lack of communication from the club that has made me feel like this.
Not renewed our season tickets yet either - I am even thinking do I bother this year and just pick and chose games instead especially with all those horrible 12.30pm kick offs.
