Refwatch Preview: Gillingham (a) Monday, 24th Nov 2008 19:56 Not sure what to say about the picture to your left other than that is the face of our official on Tuesday evening - a Mr Steve Cook from Surrey. We saw Steve Cook twice last season; in one game he was bloody awful, but in the other he was hardly noticed.
He was the man in the middle when we won 4-3 at Shrewsbury early last term, a game that was his first in the Football League.
Some of his decision-making bordered on the farcical that afternoon when he looked out of his depth and incapable of officiating at this level.
He showed seven yellow cards in a game that was never dirty; it just appeared as though his card was his only method of trying to take control.
However, by the time he refereed our match at Macclesfield in December, he was much-improved and got through the game with the minimum of fuss.
Fans may recall getting soaked to the skin that day as Dale came from 2-0 down to draw 2-2, with Glenn Murray heading a last-minute equaliser.
Mr Cook is very young for a Football League referee. He’s just 24-years old and you know you’re getting on a bit when not only are the referees younger than you, they are considerably younger than you!
This season has been a bit of a no-go for him, though, as fitness and injury problems have meant he has only refereed three games to date, the most recent being Exeter’s 2-0 defeat of Chester on 1st November.
