Key Signings Mean Difficult Decisions
Key Signings Mean Difficult Decisions
Thursday, 5th Jan 2012 09:36

The stakes are high and Saints need to invest now if they want promotion.

The key to improving any squad is usually not wholesale change, but gradual evolution over a period of time and it has to be said that is what has been happening at St Mary's over the past two years and now is the time for a little more of it.

The problem is that we are now at a stage where we have some good players who are fans favourites and that being the case its sometimes difficult for supporters to notice key areas that need changing, to illustrate this, when Saints signed Fraser Richardson & Danny Butterfield and let the reliable Lloyd James go, it was fairly easy to see the natural progression in this, however earlier this season the signing of Danny Fox to replace Dan Harding was harder to accept by some and it took an error in the game at Fratton to perhaps highlight that when you are chasing promotion you have to have players in that dont make too many errors.

The problem is at the moment, Saints do have a big squad, injuries should not be too much problem too it, apart from up front where we are stretched due to the long term absence of Lee Barnard and the inability of David Connolly to stay fit for long and we looked to be stretched further with the loss of Rickie Lambert for three games, however in the rest of the pitch it shouldnt be a problem, we have the numbers and most of them are proven Championship players, probably only Ryan Dickson and Ben Reeves not yet having had the chance to do so, our real problem has been our failure to utilise players like Danny Butterfield, Lee Holmes and the aforementioned Dickson, earlier in the season you could understand why they werent getting much of a look in, but given that when they have played they have contributed its a puzzle why over the last two months and 9 games since we beat Coventry on 5th November, a run thats yielded only 9 points why they havent got a look in at all.

So if we are to take that next step forward then we have to take difficult decisions and the first one is to bring in a new keeper, being blunt this is an area that could really cost us, a good steady commanding keeper will win you points you might not have got otherwise, I can hear the howls of outrage now, but for those shouting, ask yourself a question, is Kelvin really good enough for the Premier, at 35 you would have to say the answer is no, that being the case we should be looking at replacing him now, his error at Brighton wasnt his only blunder this season and to be frank I feel a good keeper would have dealt with the first of the three shots that Bristol City had for their goal last week, if the ball was got out of the danger area then we would have got a point at least and that could be vital. Like last season our shots on target/goals against ratio is not good, Brighton had five shots on target and three went in, one of the other two was the fumbled shot that lead to the first goal and that isnt good, away from home Saints have conceded 19 goals in 12 games, thats 6 more than any other side in the top six and 3 more than Pompey and even one more than Forest who are second from bottom, if we are serious about promotion then we have to stop this leaking of goals on the road and it has to start with the goalkeeper.

In defence its hard to see why we are going wrong, but as mentioned the way we are leaking goals on the road has to stop, Fox and Richardson are mainly tight given that their role is to get forward and put in crosses, something they have done with great effect, the real problem is in the centre, Hooiveld and Fonte are individually good players, but there is something there thats hard to put your finger on, they just dont click as a partnership, Nigel Adkins has hinted as much and rumours still abound that we will bring in another centtre half, Liam Fontaine was again mentioned till his injury, 99% of the time we are tight at the back, but every game there are individual lapses of concentration and errors those that howl derision at me again need only look at that away goals tally, do we want to watch a side full of players we like ? or do we want to see players doing their job for the full 90 minutes, again Nigel Adkins wasnt wrong when he said after the pompey game that he cant remember a goal scored against us that the opposition really had to work for where we didnt give it away to some degree.

In midfield we have plenty of bodies, even without Chaplow there are plenty of options, the right side has been a problem and tactically we have got it wrong on too many occasions by trying to shoe in one of our central players, but it isnt the most crucial area to look at, and why the manager hasnt tried a combination of Butterfield and Richardson along the right flank is a puzzle.

Up front is the other crucial area though, I said when the loan window shut and people were asking why I was so keen on Lukas Jutkiewicz that we had no covver for Rickie Lambert, for a team that plays a certain way and rarely seems to change its style and everything channelled through one man, not to have a like for like back up for him is utter folly and with the absence of Connolly all season we have struggled to change things up front, if only to give one of the front men a break late on.

I fear though that one of the oft mentioned targets of Maynard, Sharpe or Rodriguez wont be on their way, Adkins has hinted of his admiration for Jutkiewicz and i have a feeling that he may be the only truly expensive proven signing this January at least on a permanent basis, with Tadanari Lee being a fairly low cost gamble, this wont best please many who accepted that perhaps Oxlade-Chamberlain was sold a little bit too late to utilise the money in August, but did expect to see a big chunk of it spent in January.

Ideally then Saints would bring in an experienced goalkeeper & central defender of Premiership quality and two strikers, if we did this then I feel that would be the next pieces in the jigsaw and give us the firepower to take us towards the Premier League, it would be good to see a fair chunk of the alledged £15 million from Chamberlain's sale used to do this, certainly we could get what we need for around £7-8 Million in total, possibly less.

In four weeks time we will have some big questions answered, are the Club's owwners serious about this challenge and are they willing to back their manager with cash in the transfer window and indeed is the manager able to make some difficult decisions regarding certain positions.

Any keeper we bring in has to be top draw, similar to when we brought Niemi in to replace Jones, that won't be easy in this window, the same goes for centre half. At best we may be able to bring in a proven championship player but no guarantees he would be a) prem quality or b) better then what we've got. There aren't many if any names that spring to mind who we could realistically get in.

Up front and out wide will be an easier task to add quality and that should be our minimum aim in this window.

"his error at Brighton wasnt his only blunder this season and to be frank I feel a good keeper would have dealt with the first of the three shots that Bristol City had for their goal last week."
100% agree. Kelvin always seems to be superb, making excellent saves, but then a balls up....

Maybe a loan keeper from a prem side that cant get a game at mo? I'll get my thinking cap on later.

Sorry guys but there is not a keeper on this planet that does not make errors.
Take Peter Czec and Pepe Reina recently and that 18million pound clown that plays for UTD.
Of course KD makes errors but less than most and that is as good as it gets.
I certainly dont think he needs replacing.
Nick when you mention error at Fratton I presume you mean Harding which is ridiculous because we all know that we conceded because Guly bottled his challenge.

Our biggest problem is our 15k a week wage cap which incidentally I am all in favour of.
I dont want above average championship strikers coming here on 30k a week upsetting the wage structure.

Quite excited about the Japanese lad.
They are technically very gifted and have a good work ethic.
He is not a cheap option beacuse he is coming at the top end of our wage structure.

Get the lad in from Coventry as direct competition for RL.
Would like to see a wide player as well - a good one but personally I think Puncheon could be the answer.

if we had kept OXO we would have been promoted by now!

I have to agree with Nick about Kelvin, whilst he has been loyal and fairly reliable, the last few games shots have rebounded off him leading to goals that have cost us, and its something we should be doing more of . ie shooting! as well.

Davis was at fault against Bristol City and Brighton but he has been great for us up until then. All keepers make mistakes at some point. Reina v Man City for example. I don't think Davis should be replaced this season, but you're right that he's not Premiership quality.
I think the defence, in terms of personnel, is very good. Fox and Richardson are excellent at getting forward and putting quality crosses in and we have scored numerous goals from this. Fonte and Hoiveld both have all the attributes to make a sound partnership. I think the problem with leaking goals is the lack of defensive cover in the midfield. Saints lack an experienced midfielder who can sit in front of the defence and protect the centre backs. We don't have a player who can get stuck in and really break up the play and stop the opposition. Dean Hammond was signed to help do this and did well in League One, and even though he has a brilliant box to box work rate, I'm not sure he is so effective in the Championship. Cork and Schneiderlin are more playmakers than destroyers. So I think Saints need a Scott Parker/Gareth Barry/Nigel De Jong type defensive midfielder to help out the defence when we're under pressure, especially away from home. No realistic targets spring to mind though.
Going forward, I think our recent problems have been down to the fact that there's no goal threat from Cork, Schneiderlin or Hammond, basically from our central midfield. The reliance has been on Lallana, Lambert and Guly to produce the goals. They are normally incredibly consistent in scoring the goals but when they fail there's little else (apart from Connelly and De Ridder) who offers a threat of scoring. We've definitely missed Chaplow in recent weeks.
This might be part of the reason why they are signing Tadanari Lee. Obviously we need another striker but Lee could be the player to finish off the chances we've been missing recently. There's massive question marks about how well he will adjust to the English game but hopefully he the ability and attacking instincts to be a success. Lee does sound like a Cortese signing though, the increased revenue from the Asia will be massive!

St Michael

all keepers make errors reina is usally reliable but had an off day, but in the cae of kelvin its more often than that, to blame him for the Bristol goal is harsh, but fact is a decent keeper would have got it out of the danger area not pushed it into the path of the forward, its not just about errors, but saving you points and in the main he gives away more points than he saves, evidence is the shots on target to goals ratio not just this season but last.

The goal at fratton was a combination of errors, firstly Harding who kicked it out for a corner like a sundal league player, when he had time to do something better, but the real culprit was the man who should have been marking Ward and let him have a free header, Guly's challenge was poor, but at least he tried to do something, if he had stood on the post he would have seen the ball sail past him and everyone would have been asking who was marking ward, he tried something and as usual with Guly people are quick to criticise, i thought better of you Mike I would have thought you would have asked who was meant to be marking Ward, harsh as well but a looped header across the six yard box would see a good keeper deal with it before ward perhaps, again a case of get someone in better and he does things that earn you points, I dont blame Kelvin at fratton, but I think there are plenty of keepers who would have dealt with it.

You have fallen into just the trap I warned of in the article, its time to put loyalty and the past to one side and buy players who are the next level

as for the wage structure, who says its £15k a week certainly not the club

On the keeping front we could do with another Richard Wright. When he came in was like a breath of fresh air, a big keeper commanding his box.
Midfield we are sooooooo predictable. Posession is ok if we pass the killer ball not from side to side, its much too easy for the opposition. A Paul Ince Clone would do nicely. Someone to organise and on occasion rollock them.
Upfront we need at least 2 more. Pity we lost nathan dyer he would fit the bill for one i think. The other could be the Jutkiewicz guy.
We seem to be going for a cheaper option at the moment and the untryed. If we are going to push on we need some good fresh face to lift things in the camp and give us option pretty quickly.

I agree that Kelvin has made blunders this season but I would also point a finger at the defence. Against Hull & Bristol City Kelvin spilled the ball which resulted in conceding a goal but our defence were slow and didn't deal with it. Any striker will look out for this error from a keeper but so should the defenders and make sure that they are first to the ball. We do need another keeper be it either for Davis or Bart. Against Brighton I noticed that on several occasions that Fox was nowhere near their right wing and gave them too much space in which to cross. Although at first I was in the Harding camp, I have no preference now to either Harding or Fox but I think they both need to improve but can't understand why they are being alternated so frequently.
Nick: we do have a big squad but not a strong one - it lacks quality.

I appreciate the constraints of our wage structure (whatever it is) but if our ambitions are to get promoted and STAY in the Premiership now is the time to make a couple of influential signings. Any potentials must have the right attitude we don't want any prima donnas and they must be better than what we have already.

A forward is a must Jutkiewicz yes, but how about Robbie Keane or even Bobby Zamoora if they were happy to roll their slevves up and take a pay cut (not too much to ask for in return for playing for Saints!).

I agree with REEDYREEDOREEDZ in terms of a defensive midfielder, a leader is neaded, but I can't think of any candidates at the moment. I would also go for Albert Adomah, someone who is creative.

TOGETHER AS ONE!

I agree with most of the comments. I hope we go for speed which is a great asset in this league as anywhere. I hope we get an experienced striker as Lee is an unknown quantity but other Asian players with their dedication and workrate have done well. I would like to see Maynard, Sharp or Rodriguez as it would demonstrate real ambition with a proven goalscorer at this level and with the credentials to probably make it in the premiership. However as I have said before our chairman's purse strings will probably not go that far, with Jutkiewicz probably the best we can get for the money. I think it will be difficult to get a no nonsense midfielder and as for a new keeper I think we would probably need to go abroad, but it is difficult, ask Sir Alex!

Just to chip in on the goal we conceded at Poopey.

The real player at fault was neither Guly for his lack lustre challenge nor Harding for putting the ball into 'safety' for the corner.

Watch the goal again and watch Adam Lallana (who is marking the goal scorer) trot away as the ball sails toward the far post then gets knocked back to the front post. (Best view is from behind the goal)

If Lallana had stayed to make the challenge, Guly could have remained on the post. Between them we wouldn't have conceded.

The Davis thing - I've been a big fan of his due to the big saves he's made over the years as well as this season.

However, i must admit that during the last 2 games he's made the same error twice; pushing the ball back into the danger zone in front of goal rather than pushing it wide. I really thought he was experienced enough to not be doing this any more.

Would he be satisfied stepping aside as a number 2 if we brought in a new number 1? Who knows.

Agreed we need a new pacey striker, a keeper and a good defensive midfielder. From the start of the season up until the end of November we had 10 goalscorers; Hammond, Lallana, Connolly, Harding, Guly, Chaplow, Schneiderlin, Holmes, Hooiveld, and De Ridder, but in recent games have you noticed how it's only been Lambert & Guly.
