£51 Pounds At Manchester City - Welcome To The Premier League
£51 Pounds At Manchester City - Welcome To The Premier League

Saints fans face the harsh realty of the cost of Premier league football on the opening weekend when they have to pay over fifty pounds for a ticket to see their side play Manchester City.

Of course this isnt the fault of Saints who merely exposed their supporters to this sort of ticket price by being promoted back to the Premier, but a ticket price like this somehow sticks in the throat, however if you are shocked at this figure then there is some good news, this price is for the upper tier, if you slum it in the lower then you can pay the much reduced sum of a mere £49, under 16's only have to pay a mere £27 whichever level and City thank their over 65's, the very group that followed them through 35 years or more of hurt and trophyless seasons by relieving them of a whopping £42, Ok only £40 in the lower level.

A look at the Manchester City website though does seem to throw up a discrepancy in price, the equivalent seats at the opposite end of the ground are much cheaper, only £45 & £43 depending on the level, Im sure that City have dressed up these prices within a membership scheme as I believe its against Premier rules to charge away fans differently to those in an equivalent seat in home areas and to be fair City fans in the same stand as us are charged the same price as us, assuming there are actually any individual tickets available and not all sold as season tickets.

Perhaps this would be easier to take if City hadnt spent so many years claiming to be the peoples club of Manchester, sadly they forgot all about this when grasping the middle eastern millions.

Today I became a firm advocate for introducing a rule where clubs have to charge visiting supporters the same price as their own fans would be charged when they visit the opposition, this being a bronze game we have probably got it cheaper than most other clubs in the league, but that doesnt make it right

Bob: "Hey Dave, I'm accusing you of breaking in my house and robbing my stuff. I've not liked you since you got that new job and everyone else is saying you're a knob, so you must be".

Dave: "But Bob, I've been out of the country. And those things people say just aren't true".

Bob: "Yeah? You're paranoid, you?"

Dave: "Okey dokey then."

How was the article poorly researched ? all it did was bring the price of a ticket for Saints supporters wanting to attend this match, I got the price correct, I even got the fact right that the equivalent seat at the other end of the ground was cheaper because it was part of some sort of membership scheme, in this case the family stand

It seems that I got all my facts right, although some City fans feel that I should have informed my fellow Saints supporters that this ticket price is fine because City season ticket holders are "all right Jack"

For what it's worth, I agree that £50 plus for a match-day ticket is obscene, no matter which club is charging such amounts. It does seem that the Southampton game is being classed as a Category A game, not because of the opposition (no disrespect), but because it's the first home game of the new season - the first competitive match at Eastlands since winning the PL.

In my opinion, the price for away fans should match what those fans pay on average to watch their team at home. For example, I know that Southampton are regarding their game against City at St Mary's as a category A game, so whatever the average match-day ticket price for that is, Southampton fans should be charged the same amount for the game at Eastlands. (Interestingly, Sunderland are being charged up to £25.50 for their game against Arsenal at The Emirates, and for Sunderland's game at home against Reading the ticket prices are similar, but that is probably just a coincidence.)

But as you SaintNick pointed out, the price Southampton are paying for tickets is really no different to what City fans are paying for a match-day ticket. With the exception of the Family Stand (the reason for that being obvious and perfectly understandable). And I know that a lot of City fans are not happy about being charged this amount, so I personally don't quite understand why so many of my fellow City fans have been so critical of your post in their replies.

The words football and too much money in the same sentence. Now there's a shocker.

Seriously, this is a non-article. It amazes me that it has caused so much ire between the city and saints fans. Tickets for premier league football matches are overpriced. ALL tickets, at every club.

That's just the way things are.
