Swansea Fail Scottish Test

Swans Fail Scottish Test

Brian Flynn went into his first serious friendly today with a decent indication of how he sees his side taking shape ahead of the new season. With Brian Murphy replacing the injured Roger Freestone in the Swansea goal and with the possible inclusion of Andy Robinson ahead of James Thomas, the Swans lined up as follows

Murphy, Jenkins, Howard, O'Leary, Hylton, Martinez, Britton, Trundle, Robinson, Johnrose, Connolly.

The Scottish side's first goal came in the 26th minute when McQuilken worked the ball down the left hand flank and crossed into the area. There was confusion in the Swansea defence and as the loose ball broke it was Mackie who prodded it past Brian Murphy to give the Dons the early lead.

Swansea had their chances and both Connolly and Robinson came close before the break but it was Aberdeen who held the upper hand at the interval with the only goal.

Within a minute of the re-start though the game was effectively over for the Swans. Stephen Payne crossed the ball and it was caught by Brian Murphy who immediately spilled the cross and Sheerin was on hand to put the Dons 2-0 up.

In a typically drab encounter, the remainder of the game passed with little incident and Swansea, in the main on the back foot as the higher class of the Scottish side appeared to show through. This was a view matched by Aberdeen manager Duncan Shearer commented "I was very pleased with today's performance. I thought after 20 minutes the players settled well and ran out worthy winners. Swansea were no mugs and were not a bad side, but at the end of the day we deserved our 2-0 win. It was a fair reflection and it could have easily been three." It's difficult to gauge where Aberdeen would rank if they were an English side but I would hazard a guess at around mid-table first division.

With the result from earlier already known it is now Coleraine that the Swans will face next (11.30 tomorrow) after they succumbed 4-2 to Bradford in the first match of the day - former Aberdeen striker Dean Windass grabbing a hat-trick.

The first test of the pre-season has been failed and, with all due respect to the remaining opponents, it is difficult to see that the Swans will be tested more than this game before Bury visit the Vetch in two weeks time.
