Club captain Martinez was signed from Walsall by Brian Flynn back in 2003. The Spaniard was brought in to try and help the Swans avoid relegation. He was one of the main reasons that Swansea did survive that season. High hopes were expected from Martinez the following season, until Boston's Tom Bennett made that infamous tackle which injured Roberto for most of that campaign.
Since then Roberto has not had the same impact in the Swans's midfield and made one assist for the whole of last season. A disappointing figure from the ex-Wigan man. His captaining skills and experience made up for this just a little and as the Swans make the step up a division many fans say Roberto will find League 1 easier than League 2. Let's hope they are right.
