Saints Linked Again With Possible Wanyama Replacement
Thursday, 10th Dec 2015 11:30

Saints are again being linked with a move for a potential replacement for Victor Wanyama as they prepare for the possibility that the Kenyan may move in the summer.

Saints have a definite transfer strategy these days and that involves selling players at the right time for the right price and preferably after already having the outgoing players replacement already at the club.

This could be why they are being linked with Porto's French midfielder Giannelli Imbula.

Imbula is 23 and only joined Porto in the summer from Marseille for a fee of around £14 million and he is a player in the same mould as Wanyama.

He has been capped at U20 & U21 level by France where he has lived from an early age although he was born in Belgium, however he has not broken into the French squad meaning that in October of this year after expressing a desire to revert to his country of birth at International level he has had to apply to FIFA for this to be authorised.

How serious this rumour is, is again subject to speculation, but with Wanyama not yet having signed a new contract at Saints and the subject of speculation linking him with Arsenal, Chelsea & Spurs, it could be that if Saints were to land Imbula in January they could decide to cash in on Wanyama in this window rather than wait till the summer when his value would have decreased with only a year left on his contract.

If he doesn't sign before the 'window' I 'd like to see him go whatever RK said. We're not getting the best out of him and I suspect that deep down, Ron would like to leave him out.
Romeu has for me done enough to warrant a run in VW's position and he's got the right attitude. That would free up the funds for elsewhere.
Ron must be having nightmares trying to pick our best (and most committed) midfield at present. I'd say leave VW out now and use the games till christmas to see who's 'up for it' and where we need strengthening.

As I've also said before Big Vic is not the beast he used to be. Maybe he'd raise his game at Spurs again, or wherever he wants to go to, but personally I'd be more worried about him coming a liability for us if his attitude isn't right. We need heart in the middle of that midfield and he just doens't look up for it.

Guys can we stop criticising Wanyama and start questioning the board.

Yes his performances haven't been as good as last season but the same is true for the rest of the squad with the exception of Tadic, Pelle and Mane (and possibly Davis).

We've had no longevity in the squad itself and this has made it difficult for Wanyama to have an established partner. That happened with Schneiderlin last season but is no longer the case with current midfield.

For me the issue is with the board. Tell me how many clubs managed to sell over 10 first teams players in the space of 2 seasons?

Wanyama clearly needs reassurances from the club as to where things are heading. So does Ronald Koeman. At the moment I don't really understand the club's strategy. Is it to make money and become a feeder clubs to the top 6? Or is it trying to win the EPL?

At the moment it looks like the former rather the latter.

It is not the boards fault they are not forcing other clubs to come in for our players and offer them three times the money they are being paid here plus Champions League football etc.

So what would you prefer, where we were back in the 90's when we had one player every 3 years anyone else wanted, or the situation 3 years ago when we were signing the likes of Yoshida, I didnt see anyone queuing for our players back then.

We are victims of our own success, but dont blame the board because they cant offer players the same as the United's Arsenal & Liverpools of this world

Nick every club, to a certain degree, is a victim of their own success but fundamentally the clubs that want to succeed find a way to keep their best players and attracts players equally as good if not better.

In an ideal situation we would have signed both VVD and Toby. We would have kept Clyne and brought Soares as a backup to keep him on his toes. Moreover, we would have signed Charlie Austin to showcase to Pelle, Mane and JayRod never to feel they have a guaranteed place in the starting eleven! Lastly we would have got Cabaye as a centre midfield (who was only a couple million more than Clasie) and kept Schneiderlin.

More generally, you look at how Stoke recruited compared to our so-called Black-box and I think it's a bit of joke.

Stoke got Shaquiri, Bojan and Afellay. Those 3 destroyed City's defence. The truth of matter is they should have scored at least 3-4 goals and if it wasn't for poor finishing and good goalkeeping from Joe Hart that would have been the case.

If you look at Bojan for example he was signed for as little as 3M, yet we brought Shane Long for 12M. How does that make any sense? Firstly Bojan is younger and is a very well known product of La Masia. Shane Long is older and has plenty of EPL experience yet has never really progressed that much during his career.

Transfer aside, are you telling me there aren't other means the board can use (aside from money) to keep players at the club? Are you telling me with all the profit we've made we're unable to expand the stadium? Are you telling me that the most we can offer players is 60K a week whilst Osvaldo was on 70K or more while lounging around with Boca Juniors?

I'm sorry but I have to be skeptical. Our transfer policy isn't really for footballing reasons. It's for monetary reasons. We can kid ourselves as much as we like but teams who are successful don't sell their best players every season. Last season we were very lucky. This season we're being found out and the best we can hope for is a top 8 finish.

Cortese, sorry that's pub-talk specualtion. You can't just assume players would sign for us if we were interested. At no point would Toby have ever signed for us after the January window, when his club gave a categoric no. After that he was always going to Spurs. You can't blame the board every time a player goes or doesn't sign for us. There is far more that goes on than we see. As others have stated we are victims of our own success. That's no-one's fault. We just have to manage it as best as we can.

The elephant in the room is "why do so many players not want to stay here"? Is it the location, wages, coaches getting up their noses?

Why do they bother to come here in the first place?
