Brighton Without Key Players For Trip To St Mary's
Saturday, 24th Dec 2022 08:51

Premier League football returns to St Mary's after the World Cup break, Southampton are almost back to full strength, but the Seagulls will be without at least 3 players due to injury and World Cup commitments.

Nathan Jones starts his Premier League career as a manager against one of his old clubs, Brighton & Hove Albion, but his counterpart on the visitors bench Roberto De Zerbi will be without some key players.

The most prominent missing player will be midfielder Alexis Mac Allister, who has not yet arrived back from Argentina where he has been celebrating their World Cup win.

Mac Allister will be a big loss, he has not only played in every game so far in the League, but he is Brighton's 2nd top scorer with 5 goals.

But the Seaguls will be missing key players in all departments, at the back Adam Webster is out through injury, the defender has started 13 of his club's 14 Premier League games so far this season.

Also out is striker Danny Welbeck who again has started 13 Premier League games, but is yet to score.

However De Zerbi will have one player available after the World Cup, goalkeeper Robert Sanchez has returned from his duty with Spain, he did not play in the penalty shoot out defeat at Charlton, but is expected to be return for the trip to St Mary's, however he will be ring rusty as he did not get on the pitch in Quatar.

It won't matter who they have out . It matters who we have in and what formation. Let's remember we are at home so not start with 5 at the back Fgs.

Merry Christmas Saints fans

Not many managers get a 6 week bedding in period mid season so Jones has very little wiggle room for anything other than a decent performance at least.

The initial line up v Lincoln was a head scratcher as it looked like a continuity from Ralph's tactics/formation which generally failed

I always thought that the team over the past few seasons was not as bad as it's positions but maybe our playing staff just are not good enough. The next few weeks will make clear whether that is the case and give us some Idea where we'll be come May.

It will surely take time before Nathan can get the team playing with any confidence and the way that he wants to see them playing. In some ways this is very worrying because at last we have a run of fixtures we should be winning. Management have worked wonders at Brighton and even without a few of their best players this is going to prove a very difficult challenge for our struggling squad. Well done to Adams for scoring twice in one game - we can dismiss for now the glaring misses - but until we get a goalscorer and at least one more attacking player who can be instantly influencial, we have little or no chance of putting together that successful run of results so desperately needed if we are to stay in the Premier League. It is all very well crying "Get behnd the team", but sides with the experience and organisation that Brighton have , will have nothing to fear from:our existing attacking threat. Success in the January transfer window has never been needed more than it is now!
