Southampton At Birmingham City The Verdict

Saints didn't change much from the side that started against Oxford United on Boxing Day and for a long while in this game it looked like they might get the same result, however they dug in and showed spirit to get a point, but it was a bitter sweet evening.

The only change made from Boxing Day was Jay Robinson coming in for Leo Scienza and for the first 20 minutes up at St Andrews we were an absolute shambles, as Blues came out of the traps looking to catch us on the back foot.

After that opening barrage we found our feet a little and had a chance or two and although the confidence started to return, we still looked a shadow of our former selves a month ago and it took a smart save from Gavin Bazunu to keep us in the game.

If the Saints fans thought that we could now go on and control the game then they would soon be proved wrong, Birmingham again came out of the traps fired up and with only 4 minutes gone of the 2nd half we were a goal down.

It was one of the most bizarre goals I have seen conceded, firstly when the cross came in we should have dealt with it, we thought it was going out, but a Blues player hooked it back across goal, they then played a game of head tennis as we failed to get ourselves organised and on about the 5th header it went in, looping above Gavin Bazunu as he desperately tried to claw it out from under the bar.

At this stage you couldn't see a way back, we lacked punch we lacked confidence, but luckily we didn't lack spirit, we survived a few attacks from the home side and then started to work our way back into the game.

Tonda Eckert chipped in with a couple of changes, firstly bringing on Elias Jelert for Tom Fellows did not look the best move, but it helped shore up the right side and would see the Danish International show why we signed him.

At the same time on came Leo Scienza for Jay Robinson and the game swung a little.

Then with 22 minutes left came another double change, the two Cameron charge of Archer & Bragg with Armstrong & Jander departing again didn't look great, but truth was we looked a different side and we were the side pressing.

It paid off almost immediately when Jelert made a great run down the right and crossed for Archer to poke the ball home from close range..

The last 20 minutes saw Saints in command but they couldn't find a second goal, a 5th change saw Matsuki on for Azaz, but the game ended in a draw, a result not really helping either side.

From a Southampton perspective, it was a bitter sweet experience, on one hand we dragged ourselves back up off the floor, dug in and earned a point at St Andrews, a ground where only one side has beaten Birmingham this season, but on the other it leaves us floundering in 13th place, 6 points off the play off spots.

This should have been the week where we stormed into the top 6 or at least on the cusp with two wins on the road, but it hasn't turned out that way.

The old issues still reared their heads, I am not convinced that the back 3 we have played in the last 2 games does not compliment each other and I will say it again, we need Harwood-Bellis in the centre and some strength, pace & passing ability alongside him.

But we do have some plus points, we have team spirit, a team playing for the manager and fighting their way from behind.

We saw the likes of Elias Jelert, Cameron Archer & Cameron Bragg come on and put in a great case for starting more games.

But ultimately is was two points dropped and we have to get back to winning ways, just 2 points from the last 4 games is not good enough and has seen us drop back in the promotion race.

But it is not terminal, there is a long way to go this season, but I do feel we need something in the January transfer window.

We march on, but now the game against Millwall on New Years Day is very much a must win game

Bazunu made a great save to keep us in the game. The subs changed the game. Scienza, Bragg, Jerlert and Archer all making a difference as the Blues sat back to defend their lead. Archer has played well in recent weeks with no reward, so deserved his goal for the running and energy hes brought.

Our problems imo stem from the back and we are transitioning the ball forward quickly. With Jerlert back, I hope we can switch to a back four and get Fellows higher up the pitch is a change of formation. I'm not convinced though that Tonda will change shape, yet.

In all fairness Nick’s report sums up last nights game. The biggest disappointment of the three games so far over Christmas was undoubtedly the Oxford game, a team who managed to lose last night to the worst team we have faced so far this season Swansea.

I still can’t get over how many of the forum posts this morning are written by fans who clearly feel they would be better managers than of our last half dozen managers. Many also appear to be goalkeeping coaches for good measure as well.

Currently we are just six points from a play off, another good run of 4/5 wins out of 6 games will almost certainly see us in a play off place. That’s the nature of the Championship. I do feel it’s vitally important we make promotion this year it will only become harder next season with reduced payments from the Premier Leagu.

My conclusion from this game is that we are a team of eleven, the back up lot is only average at best and all this talk of having the best squad in the Championship is just that, talk. Witness Jason Robinson who undoubtedly has moments, but reminds me so much of Tyler Dibling, ie lots of promise and talent, but will remain in short trousers for a good while yet.
Cameron Bragg on the other hand really does show a maturity beyond his years so let’s hope he too doesn't go sideways/backwards like his fellow Academy graduates once he gets to start more regularly.
And hopefully t’other Cameron has started at last to repay successive manager’s faith in him with his very well taken goal last night, but probably like most of us, I will continue to reserve judgement on him.
I don't want to go on about how disorganised (in H1 particular) our back line was but somebody needs to tell them (AGAIN!) that, when they are being pressed, they try not to be clever, because it only needs one mistake when they are passing it around amongst themselves and it is potentially curtains. Time and time again last night, tippy tappy led to a loss of possession and Brum were all over us like a rash; just thank goodness their finishing wasn’t better.
So, on the basis of last night and the previous couple of games, my head says that 8th is the best we can achieve. But if everyone else starts to have a bit of a wobble, eg Coventry, and our entire squad gets their act together again, you never know…

Anybody else perplexed as to how ex. Saint & Eastleigh reject Ben Reeves is suddenly the go to tactical wizard who Tonda regularly consults during matches? No wonder we struggle with this inexperienced duo at the helm

Sorry 111353, I don't think most posters imply they could do a better job, I'd like to think most aren't that arrogant. The new manager has done a lot that should be applauded, and that is recognised, BUT, I can't begin to understand how another manager has come in and insists in involving Stephens regularly and Manning constantly. I never like to single out individuals at all, but Stephens under previous regimes, up until recently, was not a regular starter for a good reason - I don't doubt his commitment and loyalty, but I do question his ability, even more so at 31. As for Manning, again committed, but with his preference to turn back inside so often, he'll never be a wing back, and as he's not the best defensively, I question TE, why he's playing and why TE insists on playing the system he is, when the personnel he has doesn't match that system....

The best part was that our subs actually improved our performance. They gave us control over the last 20 minutes and a chance of 3 points
The back 4 of THB Wood Baz and Stevens still try to play tippy happy at a slow pace Any team that plays a high press is likely to cash in on it
I want Leo to go back to taking the defenders on rather than trying to find the perfect pass If he gets around the back he can cause havoc with a cross or a shot
Tonda is now averaging less than 2 points per game Unless that improves a play off place will disappear

The Oxford game was bad. However I felt a lot better about last night's game. The positives to take out of last night's game were the rejigging of the squad to be able to finish better in the second half and the team improving when subs were made.

The goal we let in was just a disaster, although Bazunu wasn't at fault. Agree that change needed in defence to bring an additional midfielder on, whether that's shifting one of the CBs to CDM or just dropping one. Bring Bree back over Xmas.

Not in a bad place, but unless there is a major improvement in defence, going up to the prem would be another suicide mission.

Bazuna earned us that point last night with the save onto his right post. Really hope his issues are genuinely down to being a young keeper who has constantly played behind an average defensive that exposes him to so many shots.

Can't see sports rep buying a CB or striker in January so being realistic the only way of going up this season is a reliance on bad finishing by opponents and a large slice of luck on our part. Pretty much how RM got us promoted. However none of the teams in this league will stand a chance of staying up such is the gulf between divisions now.

Still love saints but not bothered by the wider world of football nowadays.

Unfortunately the manager & his team around him aren’t good enough for the size & ambition of the club

When I saw the lineup I thought the Manager has decided regardless of the real concerns most supporters have “ I’m sticking with my best team”. I regret he is delusional. We all think we know better than him but the question is do Bazuna, Woods, Stephens, Manning and Aziz all warrant being given an automatic place in our team.
Some may argue we do not have the backup players I suppose with this guy we may never know. He clearly does not rate the likes of Edwards so the concerns we have will not go away..
I keep banging about bringing in an experience guy in but this does not appear on SR agenda unless of course they have a cunning plan!!!

Agree with one to watch Stevens and Manning lack the Quality needed our only way forward is to play Cam Bragg Quarshie who has serious pace which the other defenders
lack andWellington who can tackle. But we Have to get a Proper number Nine whos over 5ft.3 and a goalkeeper Bazunu getting mom was laughable considering the goal he let in.
Weve appointed another muppet who does what he,s told

Giving the ball away, mainly through sloppy passing, is our main problem. Their goal came from a free kick conceded after a dreadful pass and there were lots of other occasions where we played ourselves into trouble. The ponderous and pointless tippy-tappy at the back is also a concern, as of course is the general not-good-enoughness of our defence.

I think we will score enough goals to make a challenge for the top six possible and at times we look good going forward. It is the number of goals conceded that is doing for us.

Like many I am a critic of the keeper but his save onto the post kept us in it. So credit where it is due.

Itchen North cited the problem in one sentence. In the last 4 games we've had 60% plus possession (71% at Oxford) yet earned only 2 points of a possible 12. The theory being it tires the opposition (!)..but in those games we've failed to capitalise on the advantage. Even when we had more shots (Coventry and Oxford) our conversion rate was pitiful in comparison. We've gone from averaging 3 goals a game down to just 1.

It easy to blame the defence (not without cause) but at the risk of repeating myself/ ourselves yet again; we don't have an viable alternative goalie (although Bazunu has improved somewhat) and for the 3rd season running we don't have a "big striker". It didn't work with Onuachu, but now that we have signed two good wingers, we have no height in the box to take advantage of it. Downs may improve with time, but not this season.
The games are still coming thick and fast, but the transfer window may (hopefully) end up being more exciting than some of the anticipated results.

As for the Brum game, once again their keeper (Beadle )was their best player and (like the game at SMS,) did well to save many of our best efforts and keep the score down.
