Gus Poyet has thanked Leeds for his year spent at Elland Road.

Although the Uruguyan spent just over 12-months in West Yorkshire as Dennis Wise's assistant, obviously having the mighty Leeds United on his CV worked wonders.

After a brief spell with Swindon, Poyet helped form an ex-Chelsea reunion in the north when he followed Wise in October 2006 to join Ken Bates revolution. However the script did not exactly go to play as Leeds were relegated and slipped into administration.

Starting 2007/08 with a 15 point deduction, Leeds started the season on fire and whilst Wise was top-man, many were quick to praise the efforts of Poyet.

He was headhunted to become part of Juande Ramos's backroom team at Tottenham. His departure to White Hart Lane a year ago coincided with a sticky-spell for Leeds and the eventual departure of Wise to Newcastle.

Like Wise, it has hardly been a bed of roses since quitting Leeds and Poyet found himself axed when Harry Redknapp came in and turned round Spurs.

Now he is ready to take the plunge as a manager in his own right and if the bookies are to be believed, there are no shortage of takers.

Linking up with Wise at Newcastle remains a remote possibility, but the likelihood is that Shearer will grasp the poisoned chalice. However seemingly more realistic is the vacancies at Watford and now Charlton. Poyet could even end up at League One rivals Swindon and Hudderfield.

Gus told Yorkshire Sport on Sunday that Leeds was "a great experience" for him. In the full-interview, he talked of Leeds "moving in the right direction" under Macca and earmarked Fabian Delph as something special and someone likely to be the subject of transfer speculation come January.

Poyet did not say anything controversial or extraordinary in the interview and I feel that generally, he is still respected by Leeds fans even though he walked-out on us. Many regard him as the real coaching brains behind the Wise/Poyet partnership and Wise's decision to take on a largely backroom role at Newcastle has only underlined this suspicion.

We wish him well and are sure he will be a fantastic manager in is own right. At least, unlike Ramos, he will not have any problems with da lingo!
