Eddie Gray sacking 2004 - clarification
Eddie Gray sacking 2004 - clarification
Wednesday, 24th Dec 2008 15:46

I just wanted to take the opportunity to clear-up some confusion over yet another dark-day in our recent history.

On Tuesday, I wrote "Cup defeat Hissed Macca goodbye" which was based around former boss and Leeds legend Eddie Gray's interview with the YEP, where the Scot believed that the FA Cup defeat at Histon was the beginning of the end for poor Gary McAllister.

At the end of the article, I wrote: "Despite being sacked by Leeds twice, Gray refuses to accept it is a poisoned chalice and reckons there will be interest in the job."

However, one TEAB reader Robert has argued that Gray was only sacked by Leeds the once, under controversial circumstances in 1985 and in 2004 when Leeds were relegated, he actually handed in his notice.

I must admit, in the interests of originality, I do tend to write this articles "off the cuff" and maybe I should do more research. However at the time of writing, I was somewhat under the impression following the defeat away at Bolton in 2004 Gray was sacked and Kevin Blackwell took charge for the final game of the 2003/04 season away at Chelsea.

Looking at BBC Sport website (10/05/04), the opening paragraph reads "Leeds have relieved Eddie Gray of the managerial post at the club". The official club website history section does not positively say wither way whether Eddie jumped or was pushed.

So sorry I cannot be more specific and I apologise to Robert for any confusion caused. However I was under the impression that the somewhat strange decision to replace Eddie with Blackwell with just one game to go and us already relegated was instigated by Krasner and his board and not Eddie.
