![]() Monday, 5th Jan 2009 15:41 The YEP report that Leeds are due to announce a tie-up with Minster FM to bring commentary back to the FM frequency. For some, it was a dark-day last summer when Leeds' long-standing relationship with BBC Radio Leeds ended. It has been a controversial story. When Leeds United announced their home matches would be broadcast on DAB only station Yorkshire Radio, the argument was that it would reach a wider audience. Questions were tabled in parliament, five local MP's argued that the move would inconvenience elderly Leeds fans, unable to get to the game and unable to use or afford DAB radio sets. BBC Radio Leeds even set-up camp in the Old Peacock pub over the road from the ground to try and get round the ban. Now the staple fare on Saturday afternoon's on BBC Radio Leeds is commentary on Bradford City for crying out loud! Now it appears that Leeds have had a rethink and the YEP report on Monday that a tie-up with York-based Minster FM is on the cards. I was in Dewsbury yesterday and was received Minster FM loud and clear on my cheapo Aldi car-radio, so there is hope for the thousands of local listeners who have lost out and refuse to switch to DAB. My own view of DAB is pretty average to say the least. Maybe I am an old fart, who likes his radio with plenty of fizzles, cracks and bangs, however having owned two DAB sets over the past five years or so, I am cursed by the dreaded "gargling" of the broadcasts. Maybe it is where I live? however it is far less superior than the FM it is supposed to supersede. I think I paid less than £30 for my last DAB set, in all honesty if you have not got one I would not bother until they either fall in price again, the technology catches up with itself or probably the most sensible option of the lot and stick with the FM frequency...or go back to it as Leeds have done. We await the spin on this story from the club with interest!
