Clarke could have been a top keeper if his early displays were anything to go off. There was a game at Gillingham where he produced a 10/10 display, one of only two I ever gave in EGP I think, but he was never the same after the injury.
The whole defence was visibly less confident with him in goal after Ian Gray got injured. It got so bad that Gray actually played one Tuesday at Scarborough when clearly unfit, but the team were in the midst of an awful run and Clarke was all over the place.

It's a fantastic piece of work. But yeah, Holness was better than Dawson that season. It's been all too quickly forgotten by revisionist history after the traumatic time Holness had the season after under new management, but that wasn't totally down to him.
No player suffered more than Holness when Keith Hill left, if he'd stayed Holness would still be at the club or playing at a higher level than Tranmere. | |
