Obesity 11:25 - Dec 11 with 14463 viewsexiled_dictator

a very sensitive subject, not something to be laughed at, but definitely something to be addressed on a national scale.
and as someone who was probably obese and has worked very hard to reduce the medical effects of obesity, i can understand the worldly temptations and peer pressure that is out there.

H O W E V E R . . . . . . . . . . . . . .

i have an issue with dame sally davies, england's chief medical officer.
in her opinion, obesity is as big a threat as terrorism.
really?
wtf is this woman smoking, and does she get it on nhs prescription?

i am really struggling to envision a situation where an overweight female gets onto a crowded train and explodes killing tens of innocent passengers a la mr creosote. or walks down the road so recklessly that she manages to run over and kill several pedestrians.

i do understand that obesity is very real and can really affect a person and their family, but comparing it to a terrorist attack on the streets of london is just a joke. p45 time, me thinks.

It's not what you've got; it's where you stick it.

What on earth is wrong with Chav ?

The fact that you typed it but felt that you had to break up the other two shows that .

This word police stuff really does water down real genuine nasty prejudice .

What word would you have us use Baz ?

I only broke the words up because LFW made me mate.

For people who act anti socially, dick head covers all basis. That way politicians, celebrities, or investment bankers are included without bringing class into it.

I know you probably think I'm a whingy pedant, but it's just isn't nice. If you want to attack someone for damaging society look a bit higher up the food chain.

I don’t like “chav” because it seems to mostly be used to sneer at working class people who dress a certain way, shop at Greggs/Iceland and live on estates, regardless of whether they’re good, decent people or “scum”. It presumably makes people feel superior when they can point at someone kitted out at Sports Direct on a low income/benefits, and dismiss them as a “chav” without knowing a thing about them. Each to their own, but I think it's a horrible word.

I'm working class and to me a Chav is a young yoot neer do well ( hoody if you like )
If I called people who lived on estates Chavs it would be a bit close to home..
I might be wrong though about the words meaning.
I haven't been back in a while..

That’s the general idea, mate, but in my experience, I hear it used all the time — generally by people from very comfortable backgrounds — to laugh at people who fit in with the stereotype of not badly behaved youth, but a class of white people who typically live on estates, wear a lot of leisure wear, don’t have the best diets, have kids young etc. And that’s regardless of whether they’re grafters, good as gold or anything else; it’s simply their wardrobe, diet and where they live that enables others to sneer at them.

I also hate "White trash" as a term, so maybe I'm just too sensitive.

would vicky pollard be classified as a chav?

Vicky Pollard is your common-or-garden teenage delinquent, the sort you can see hanging around any number of off licences in Britain, trying to persuade people going inside to buy them 10 fags and a bottle of White Lightening.

what about harry enfield's loadsamoney?
or is he a son of thatcher?

That’s not my experience. I find it’s people from middle-class backgrounds and up who tend to use the word chav — and they use it to describe anyone who looks white and working class regardless of what how they’re behaving or what they’re like. It’s an acceptable term you can use when you want to sneer at the white, working class.

I went to the doctor to get my hearing looked at. While I was there he told me I was obese an did some tests and then told me I shouldn't drink any more.

Which was fine as I usually limit myself to six pints a night and that's probably enough.

ok, so reading some of the comments, here's a couple of questions for you:
(ignoring naturally medical issues or thyroids)

seriously obese children under the age of 18, should the parents be prosecuted?
should the parents of seriously obese have to pay for additional nhs treatment or medication?
should such a thing as summer fat camp be mandatory for kids who are in danger?
and given the time of year, how long does a 150kg child take to cook? with or without potatoes?

My brother is sedentary and was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes. I went for a blood test and was told my cholesterol level was dangerously high ( family history). Took up running , not massive distances but try to do 5K , 3 times a week and sometimes run further. I now do Parkrun every Saturday which means a good change of routine as at 9.00 a.m so not in the pub every Friday and cut down on junk food. Was a real wake up call. Would say to people around 35 years old or older to request a cholesterol and fasting blood test if you have had not had one.

From the Independent reporting a study by the National Centre for Health Statistics at the Centres for Disease Control and Prevention in Maryland, US:-

Mild obesity (those with a BMI between 30 and 34.9) brings a 5 per cent lower premature death rate, according to the study. Although this was not statistically significant, it suggests there is no increased risk of premature death attached to that weight range.

So enjoy your short lives you skinny, patronising, soon to die b@stards

There's a certain amount of justifiable outcry against that BMI these days, and 5% obese would probably be quite a few of us. As far as I know you can be a normal person with a bit of a gut and be considered obese. (Am I defending myself too much here? Possibly...)

The obesity stuff seems to be a combination of individual choices, community resources (what's around in terms of fast food vs healthy food) and community culture (what peers are eating and fitting in with the norm).
