Seems to be that many of the forum posters live outside of Wales, which is a great thing to see that Swansea has a far-reaching presence... given that some of you live/have lived in England, I was wondering if I could ask a couple of questions about your country...
I'm studying Accounting/Business as my University degree in Australia, and I am able to do a semester overseas, if I choose to pursue such an option. It's been something that has appealed to me for a long time, and given I've never been to Europe before, England is probably my first preference (at this stage).
There are several Universities I can go to, including:
University of Exeter
University of Sussex
University of Southampton
University of Newcastle (tempting option - so I can abuse Shelvey in the Championship every week)
University of Sheffield
University of Birmingham
University of Leeds
University of Nottingham
And no, Swansea University is not one of the exchange partner Unis on offer.
So with that in mind, as somebody who likes to have a good time, is going to be travelling a fair bit, and is looking for a Uni which has a good reputation for being a fun place to live as a student (I'd be living on campus), and a town/city that has a good culture/shops/nightlife, what would be a good town to live in for 4-5 months on exchange?

University of Sussex is based in Brighton, about an hour away from London.
Personally, out of all the cities you've mentioned, that's the biggest and best by far for a tourist / traveller. got everything there | | | |

I studied at the University of Nottingham. Had a blast. Its highly regarded academically and the social scene was "vibrant"
Interesting "fact". There is a higher ratio of women to men in that area as a result of it being the epicenter of the Lace Industry many moons ago, although I imagine the extent of the imbalance has been exaggerated over time. I was told there were 5 women to every man. There isnt. [Post edited 28 Jan 2016 9:35]

I know Sussex very well and Nottingham reasonably well. Brighton is great, especially if you are into the arts and a very liberal attitude to life, Nottingham is the one if you're a hard drinker and sportsman, but not so interested in experimenting. |  | | |

But if it's all about the football you will (hopefully) catch a Swansea away game at Southampton, rather than at Nottingham or Brighton or Birmingham if it's next season you're coming | | | |

It's not as bohemian as it used to be. In the late 90s lots of rich Londoners started to buy up flats as weekend places making it unaffordable for the people who made it funky in the first place. I still have a few friends living there but most have now moved on. some as far as NZ.
It's still a fun place with lots going on but it's slicker and more commercialised. | |

If the Australian boy likes to surf (if that's not too much of a stereotype  ) then it's just a short drive to Cornwall's best beaches. Could be ideal for him? |  |

They're all good universities with a lot to offer. I'm sure you'll have a great time whichever one you choose.
Brighton is a great place. I've worked with some people from the IDS at Sussex and they seem to really enjoy living and working there. |  | | |

Yes I would be aiming to come over later this year (around September), until end of January, so I will be in for the 2016-17 football season.
Going to Swansea and seeing a PL game there is 100% on the bucket list!
What is it like living on campus?
In Australia it is the norm to go to the Uni in your home city, so you live at home with your parents whilst studying, hence I haven't experienced the "campus lifestyle" before - anyone got tips for that? Are the parties as wild as the movies play them out to be? | |

Well after looking at the league tables it seems Exeter is right up there, particularly in Accounting, for student satisfaction.
My brother went to Camborne School of Mines, in Cornwall, which is a sattellite of Exeter Uni, and as you say Cornwall is another matter altogether. | |

as a southampton almnus I would recommend there on the list.
a nice mix of the leafy and the grotty, near the sea and new forest, but not far from london.
seems ok a few times I have been down recently with the swans, but my view on nightlife would be 20 years old. plenty of student pubs in portswood and st marys, but the campus is a nice secure, safe zone. | | | |
