Adam Johnson on 19:13 - Feb 10 by skippyjack | He was 26 and she was 15.. slightly big age gap.. he should've known better. But let's be honest.. he's not the only bloke who has had sex with a minor.. i bet a few on this forum have.. 21 is adulthood.. I know about 20 off the top of my head who have slept with a minor, when they were teenagers. But he is 26.. he is a multi millionaire.. and his wife could cure all his traumatic experiences. File him under.. bit of a tw*t. |
That's a top strawman argument right there. Girls go to clubs when they are under 18, they look old enough to be there, and young guys are entitled to believe they are over the age of consent. Wails of it's not fair. Except: oh, look at that, the law recognises this issue and makes allowances for it. S6(3) of the Sexual offences Act, often referred to as the Young Mans defence says: A man is not guilty of an offence under this section because he has unlawful sexual intercourse with a girl under the age of sixteen, if he is under the age of twenty-four and has not previously been charged with a like offence, and he believes her to be of the age of sixteen or over and has reasonable cause for the belief. A girl in a nightclub who is 15, but clearly should be 18 to get in, and also looks like she's 18 is definitely a good case for "reasonable cause" for that belief. Of course, this doesn't work for Adam Johnson because a) he's 26 and old enough to know better and b) because he actively groomed her for months knowing she was only 15! Meaningless strawman analogies of remembering going to nightclubs when 21 and filled with girls who look older than they are is irrelevant to the discussion. Hope he goes to jail for a long time.

Adam Johnson on 13:40 - Feb 11 with 2666 views | PozuelosSideys | Just to point out, had Johnson been plying his trade at clubs such as Marseille, Leverkusen, Copenhagen etc etc at the time he was doing this and sat in his home while he was doing so, there was not a single thing illegal in what he was doing. Therefore it was probably a 'mistake' to do it in the UK. Just sayin'.

Adam Johnson on 22:54 - Feb 10 by londonlisa2001 | It's the extent of the activity that's in question for the trial. He has pled not guilty to two charges relating to that - harder to prove I imagine. Of course, so far he has lied through his back teeth and what she has said happened has been shown to be true. I must say I'm surprised Lohengrin - I know you have a daughter you have mentioned on here before. Times must have changed, because if when I was 15 some bloke in his late twenties had been persuading me to meet up with him for sex and had taken part in 'sexual activity' with me (and admitted it) the male members of my family would have not had your attitude. |
If it was one my daughters involved, Lisa, then I'd imagine that is where I would reveal myself as a steaming hypocrite in light of the attitude I've taken on here. You accused me of blaming the girl earlier but really you couldn't be more wide of the mark, I actually rather empathise with her. My stance, however, hasn't appeared out of thin air. When I was her age I had a brief fling with a twenty one year old. Brief because she thought I was eighteen; I came clean, I had to, and that was pretty much that. It was nothing like the Johnson situation, I made all the running and the fault, if fault it was, rests squarely with me. The Puritans on here may feel she was criminally culpable. She wasn't. She was beautiful and I have nothing but the fondest memories. My father found out about it afterwards, his reaction was to laugh and give me a playful punch on the arm. If I'd been his daughter instead he probably would have gone beserk! Men go through life with double-standards. I've no reason to believe I'm any different.

But there are several crucial differences Lohengrin between your story and the case here. One is that your lady friend thought you were 18 and stopped it when she found out you were 15 or whatever. Johnson KNEW she was 15 before anything happened - he has admitted that. Second is that you made the running. In Johnson's case he groomed her - he has admitted that (i.e. he was the one that persuaded her to meet up with him for sex, not the other way round). Finally, as jacko alluded to, there is a defence under the law that allows for two people of roughly the same age where they have no idea that one is actually underage. It stops the whole 'rape' situation (no longer called rape when the person is over 13) between two kids. The law recognises that as being very different to one being significantly older (as in this case). So, actually, your lady wouldn't have been prosecuted as she was only 21 and she thought you were 18. It's really different, and it's those differences which cause the disgust in people. And yes, I know that fathers have different attitudes to their sons and their daughters - I have a brother! But imagine the situation where one of your daughters was involved in something like this (please God that doesn't happen of course) and other men were effectively taking the attitude that some on here are.

Adam Johnson on 12:50 - Feb 11 by londonlisa2001 | lol - I know - I was thinking what his reaction would have been !! He (or one of my friends' Dads) was always there to get us at the end of an evening out as well even if late. But the reality of course is that these days it's increasingly difficult to keep tabs on everything that your 15 year old would be doing on email or text. Easier when they're little, but at that age it's hard for a parent to review every single text / whatsapp or similar. Teenagers can be pretty clever as well at hiding things from their parents, so I do have some sympathy and can easily see how this girl's parents would have been completely unaware of who she was meeting up with. I guess you could take the view to stop her and her friends going out clubbing or whatever full stop, but let's be honest - we all used to go out with friends at that age - it'd be incredibly strict parenting that would say to a 15 year old that they can't go out at night. This girl's father seems to have been the one who, when he found out, immediately took action, so it doesn't appear to be the sort of situation where the girl's parents don't give a toss. I completely agree Lisa and there are so many different type of app for children to use. I wasn't being critical of her parents, but times are totally different today in ways that they weren't back in the day grooming meant brushing the dog. Nevertheless, parents have to know, by whatever means available to them, what their child is doing, it could be as simple ask asking what they're doing when they're on a device. When I was growing up girls didn't look like they do today that's for sure. I wouldn't like to be a teenager these day, we had far more freedom growing up in Clase, back then and my first computer game was a dot going back and forth, look at what's available today? I don't know the answer to it all but children look much older than they actually are but children they most definitely are. I understand that it all came to light via her facebook page, and her dad then called the police, but for every one that get caught how many get caught?

It's very difficult and I agree parents have to do everything they can, and maybe it's also a matter of realising that there are complete scumballs out there and you just can't assume that people are generally decent so you have to be a little paranoid as a parent or responsible adult. I also had that computer game btw, although only when I was older :-) On a serious note, the sexualisation of young teenagers is completely out of hand. The amount of pornography that young boys and girls are now subjected to is genuinely worrying. And girls (boys too increasingly) are under more and more pressure to reveal all, make themselves up to the nines, wear virtually nothing - it's crazy (I know I sound like an old git). The influence of music videos and so on and the antics of female music stars is just awful - as you say it's making people less free rather than more free. The problem of course, is that while they may look older these days, and have more pressure to be sexually active when they are little more than kids, their emotional development hasn't changed - kids these days may look and sound more grown up, but they're not really (and in many ways I think they are less grown up than we were because they tend to be wrapped in cotton wool more often). I guess all you can do ultimately is to try to instil as many good values in the kids around you that you can, and hope that they make good decisions for themselves and are never afraid to tell you anything.

Couldn't agree with this Lis any more, totally spot on. You have got to trust your children to certain degrees to do the right thing and must always be there to catch them when they fall. I see far too many children having children these days and its terrible to watch, they haven't grown up themselves. I have grandchildren and none of my children are married, its not necessary these days, but they are in loving relationships, even then there are no guarantee's these days. What more can any parents do other than ensuring your children will at least have some morals and to trust them to use them.

I'm going to give him the benefit of the doubt here and assume that Sunderland's legal people told him he had to be very careful what he said, but in his press conference Allardyce when asked about whether Johnson would be available for the rest of the season stated that he wasn't sure about his availability after this weekend so couldn't answer!! An answer along the lines of ''he will never play for any team for as long as I am at this club as I believe his admitted behaviour to be utterly abhorrent and way beyond anything that is acceptable in our society and I am not prepared condone it in any way, shape or form for the sake of a game of football' would have been nice.
