Swanseas Beachfront Tower re opens as a restraunt and cocktail bar in February on 19:27 - Nov 11 by exhmrc1 | The pm I sent you the other day showed how the university was developing links to company's like Google, Rolls Royce and British Aerospace are also involved in research there. Surely that can only be good news. Some of the roles there lecturers, technicians and researchers will be well paid. Hopefully companies like these take people on and the future gets brighter. The problem with the negativity on here and elsewhere is that it discourages people from coming here. Therefore businesses close and jobs get lost. As others on here have testified there has been improvements in the city and improving it further should be the order of the day and not worrying about what goes on up the road. However lets not forget not only have we lost David Evans but they lost David Morgan too after 125 years. The Louis has closed having been opened in 1960. St Mary's Street is dying in the way High Street did here. How long will it before Howell's suffers. It is all very well building new shopping centres but historically it has been proven it has a negative effect elsewhere as shops from there move into the new units. The Capital shopping centre last year had only 3 out of 24 units with tenants. |
Negativity by Jo Public does not discourage investment or improvements to our City. Happy clapping and voting Welsh Labour does though. The problem with Cardiff is it has the vast majority of Private, Publc, Third Sector, Media and Leisure jobs in Wales. This in turn is encouraging more transport infrastructure improvements to an area that already has the best. For me it us all about the rest of Wales which is fast becoming a wasteland as a result of this. As for my views on Swansea, well I am always first to say that we are sexier than Cardiff and our university and football clubs are our leading lights. Wealth for us and the rest of Wales however is not going to happen without the will and the investment from WAG. ....and before the good Doc and Raynor pick me up, I also feel our LA is culpable as well. They are doing their best but at the same time will not criticise Cardiff Bay as they are toeing the Party line and do not want to upset the political applecart.

I am probably in a far better position to judge than you. Having worked so long in the middle of it I know quite a bit about our homeless problem as it was on our doorstep. Much of it is fuelled by drugs and drink. I recall speaking to an super who is a friend many years ago. I expressed how bad it was on High street but as the boss of the area tried to say it wasn't. It was bad there was no doubt about it. One day one of my colleagues who worked part time went to catch a bus home outside CKs. One of the girls there was offering these guys a blow job for a tenner and she wasn't your Russian girl. I used to talk several days a week to Brian Tea cosy Pete before he passed away. We had some great discussions about cricket especially his hero Geoffrey Boycott and how he compared to the likes of Alastair Cook today. The reality is that the homeless problem in Swansea is no different to other cities including Cardiff and Liverpool. ITV Wales carried a series on the news about the homeless problem in Cardiff a few weeks ago. The reality is that since those dark days the city has improved. Being there and walking through the centre proved that. This is perhaps the difference between me and you. I was there before the buildings on Alexandra Road were knocked, have been through some very bad times and am now seeing the improvements. Many stores that have closed and we probably both wish were still there were national failures. I count Woolwoths, C&a's, Littlewoods and BHS amongst these. The change in the way we shop has accounted for warehouses like JT Morgan, House of Kent and Leonard Charles closing. Much as some like to deny it David Evans closed because it wasn't making enough money as has David Morgan in Cardiff. I honestly cannot see it being successful if it was reopened or some other store replaced it. When you lose these shops it takes some effort replacing them especially during difficult economic times. However replace them we have with the kind of stores seen elsewhere like Slaters Menswear, Zara, H&M, River Island, Miss Selfridge, Top Shop, New Look, Primark, USC, Animal, Superdry etc. There are currently 7 stores empty on Oxford Street and one on Lower Union Street. Every unit in the quadrant and whitewalls is taken. I personally would like EVERY unit to be taken but that happens nowhere. There are a few shops we need to let. The one next to Next is one example. The one opposite the Swans shop is another and the one in the old 99p shop. Some of the other shops are very small and it is difficult to see who will take them. Certainly the ones vacated by the Halifax and the Card shop are very small. Where I differ from others is I don't think a John Lewis style shop would be successful. Swansea tends to work for the middle ranged shops I previously mentioned. There isn't enough of the people who will pay their prices. The thing is that Liverpool has 4 times the number of people Swansea does in its metropolitan area. 4 times the number therefore available to buy expensive items. Cardiff has double the number but attracts people in from wealthier areas eg parts of Monmouthshire and the Vale of Glamorgan. As an example there wasn't a single house in Llancarfan worth less than 250000 15 years ago. The area around Cowbridge is extremely wealthy and is not far from Cardiff. This is why the more expensive stores will work in Liverpool or Cardiff and David Evans failed here. £2,950,000 6 bedroom detached house for sale Usk, Monmouthshire, NP15 This 6 bed country house has been up-graded enjoying an idyllic rural setting on the outskirts of the market town of Usk. The whole crux of your argument for at least 2 years has been getting people into Swansea. That’s exactly what bars and restaurants do. Swansea has smartened up its act significantly in the last few years in that regard. Massive department stores in every city are a thing of the past. It would never occur to me to go to John Lewis, even if we had one here. Future generations are going to view shopping the way I do more than the way you do. Now it’s suddenly all about the motor industry? I agree with you about the Tidal Lagoon. It’s not as if that part of the bay is particularly aesthetic anyway.

I totally agree with you about the plants. Our industrial base was destroyed during the Thatcher era as mines and steelworks closed instead of being invested in. It has probably affected East Wales more than us due to the number of coalmines there and the loss of Llanwern and Ebbw Vale steelworks. It has been mentioned numerous times on here of you bragging at beating up miners. I don't know if that is true but if it is you have actually supported the destroying of our industrial base. Before anyone tries to blame the Wag they weren't even around. Sadly we are never likely to see that industrial base again. Brexit will see to that. The vast sums having been invested here under convergence funding will be lost and there is nothing to suggest any confidence the Uk government or the WAG will replace it. There is a saying that turkeys don't vote for Christmas but that is exactly what people have done here and in the valleys.

Nothing much for me to disagree with there. Except for the fact we need to improve the shopping experience. Filling units that are old and too spaced out is not going to work, we need a compact City Centre which can be expanded. As for your comments on John Lewis then I am not sure I agree. A flagship store such as this would increase footfall dramatically in my opinion. Just as an IKEA on the outskirts of Swansea would have brought in visitors from the greater region and Ireland. Instead it went to Cardiff and now you have two units 20 miles apart competing with each other. I agree we struggle due to lack of investment therby we have issues supporting large developments such as this . Imho though it is defeatist to dismiss Swansea's potential because of this. What we should be doing, along with the rest of Wales, is highlighting the vast and growing discrepancy between us and Cardiff and demanding our share.

Yep. Have you not seen drones of them over here due to high prices in the Emerald Isle? With the right transport infrastructure the M4 corridor could be one of the main arterial routes to Eire . Even North Western Europe, South, North America and Africa. The latter would only happen if said transport infrastructure improvemnts meant we could utilise the deep water port of Milford Haven. Having said that we probably will see a levelling out of prices once Brexit fully kicks in so you may have a point in the future as regards Irish shoppers. Trade and freight would have to carry on regardless though.
