He did a job for us and, at the price we paid for him, was one of our better buys in the January window, in contrast to Carrillo for example. In spite of his inury problems, Austin's goals won us a lot of points, which more than paid back his transfer fee and wages. Eventually though the cumulative effect of his injuries left him a bit of a crock.

"On 16 January 2016, Austin returned to the Premier League, joining Southampton on a four-and-a-half-year deal for a reported fee of £4 million. He made his debut for the club a week later against Manchester United, coming on as a second-half substitute for Sadio Mané, and scored a late winner, turning in a free-kick from James Ward-Prowse.

He scored his first two goals of the 2016—17 season on 15 September in a 3—0 Europa League win over Sparta Prague and went on to score four goals in a week, with goals against Swansea City in the Premier Leagueand Crystal Palace in the EFL Cup. In Southampton's next Premier League fixture, at West Ham United, manager Claude Puel inserted Austin in the starting lineup over Shane Long, and Austin provided the first goal as well as an assist in the 3—0 victory." He also scored in our 3-2 win against West Ham the following season. He liked scoring against them.

Yes money well spent and that goal at Old Trafford was unforgettable. Perhaps Costa would do even better for us on a short contract. Not sure what he would do for our team spirit but someone like him would probably unsettle opposing defences to our avantage.

I’m not saying he wasn’t effective for us at times. It’s just the impression I have was that he was disruptive in the dressing room and his actions since leaving have been more negative when it comes to what he’s said about Saints than any other player I can think of. ANY.
