Happy League 2020/21 Week 18 (of 34) - Deadline Saturday 9th January 12.15 00:07 - Jan 3 with 1469 viewsmfb_cufc

Week 17 Results

TOTTENHAM 3 LEEDS 0

Son Heung-min scored his 100th goal for Tottenham as they returned to winning ways. Leeds failed to score in an away Premier League game for the first time this season. Well done to TheHappyGooner for being the only one to get it spot-on, and another 17 had the outcome with 12 going for a 2-1 in what was the weeks most predicted score.

CRYSTAL PALACE 2 SHEFFIELD UNITED 0
Palace bring an end to five games without a win. Sheffield United are the first English top-flight side to fail to win any of their first 17 games in a season since Bolton in 1902-03. They have also gone 20 Premier League games without a clean sheet. A great 8 had this spot-on, and a further 15 got the outcome.

LUTON v QPR POSTPONED Due to Luton players testing positive for Covid-19

NORWICH 1 BARNSLEY 0
Norwich's first win in three matches put them four points clear at the top of the Championship. Only 2 got this spot-on, and another 24 had the outcome.

STOKE 0 BOURNEMOUTH 1
Junior Stanislas scored the only goal of the game in a low-key Championship encounter in the Potteries. A decent 5 had this spot-on, and a further 11 got the outcome.

SWANSEA 2 WATFORD 1
Swansea take their unbeaten home run to 9 games, as they came from behind to go second in the Championship. A divine 9 got this spot-on, and a further 7 had the outcome.

NORTHAMPTON 0 SUNDERLAND 0
Sunderland were playing their first match in over two weeks and were well off their best in a game of few chances. Nobody had this spot-on, and just gsy163 got the outcome. 21 predicted a win for Sunderland.

SWINDON v WIGAN POSTPONED Due to a frozen pitch

COLCHESTER v TRANMERE POSTPONED Due to Covid-19 issues in both squads https://www.cu-fc.com/news/2021/january/tranmere-update-statement/

GRIMSBY TOWN 1 CAMBRIDGE UNITED 2
Paul Hurst's second spell in charge of Grimsby began with a defeat by promotion contenders Cambridge. A magnificent 7 got this spot-on, and another 10 had the outcome.

NEWPORT v SOUTHEND POSTPONED Due to a frozen pitch

The number of Covid-19 cases continue to rise, and they are now at a level higher than the first Lockdown. The number of postponed football matches, due to the virus, are growing by the week as well, and we have to wonder how much longer elite football can be played. In the present Tier system I think it will continue, especially as it was announced today that all EFL clubs are going to be tested twice a week. It could be more of a problem when the inevitable Lockdown 3 comes in. There seems to be a big inconsistency at the moment, that needs sorting out. Some teams are postponing games because a player(s) test positive, and then I read that teams are still playing games even though their players have tested positive. Barnsley for example today were without skipper Alex Mowatt, who tested positive for Covid-19, along with back-up keeper Brad Collins, while Conor Chaplin and George Miller were also self-isolating.
Due to a mixture of the virus and bad weather we lost four games this week, but six of the other seven that were played, made up for it in a big way, by producing a total of 32 spot-ons. After a number of disappointing weeks recently, it was good to have a decent one again. In what must be some sort of record sevebalo had four 3 pointers for an incredible third time this season. They were the wins for Palace, Norwich, Bournemouth and Cambridge to give him a brilliant 12 points. Only enough to share the honour of being the weeks top scorer, as ghughes11 also achieved that brilliant score by being the only to get three 3 pointers, the wins for Palace, Bournemouth and Cambridge, and three outcomes. There were seven members who had two 3 pointers, the best of which came from Tropical_Us, wessex-exile and blueeagle who all had the wins for Swansea and Cambridge, basher2010 who got the wins for Palace and Bournemouth, and burnsieespana who had the wins for Bournemouth and Cambridge. They all also got three outcomes to give them a very decent 9 points.

Happy Cup Just a reminder that the Group stage final round games take place next Saturday. All details are on the separate Happy Cup thread. Just hope that no games are postponed. If they are there will be no replacement games, and the final group placings will be decided on the games that are played.

Champions League Both leagues have been closely fought so far this season, and in turn so has the competition for places in the Champions League. We have finally come to the time when we know who the qualifiers are. As the current holder thrillseeker qualifies automatically. The other eleven places go the eleven highest point scorers over the two leagues. They are:- concordman, ghughes11, sevebalo, mfb_cufc, unitedwhites, durham_exile, TheFatGooner, burnsieespana, Sector4, wessex_exile and Daniel. Things couldn't have been any closer with Blue4U2 just losing out on the tie-breaker rules. The competition starts on the 16th February. To be administrated by wessex-exie.

Week 18 will now be a 10 game week to make up for the four postponed games in Week 17.

In the Premier That incredible performance from sevebalo took him up four places, and he tops the table for the first time since Week 2. That good start to the season was down to another time when he had four 3 pointers in Week 1. Up a place into second is mfb_cufc, after having the Cambridge 2-1 spot-on and another five outcomes. Last weeks leader thrillseeker has to settle for the final Charity Shield spot this week. Also dropping two places into fourth is TheFatGooner. The rest of the positions from 5th downwards remain unchanged. Last week I said current champ noah4x4, even though he was only eighth, was still close enough to make an impact in the second-half of the season. He proved that this week by having the wins for Palace and Norwich spot-on. Although still only eighth, he moved a bit closer to the top three.

In Division One An impressive six outcomes for concordman was enough for him to consolidate his position at the top. But his lead has been reduced again as a back to form ghughes11 moves up a couple of places, with his top scoring performance, and back into the other automatic spot, after three weeks away. Having the Swansea 2-1 spot-on helps unitedwhites to remain third. Decent weeks for burnsieespana and wessex_exile made sure they maintained their play-off spots, but more importantly got them both a place in the Champions League. The decent week for blueeagle moved him up a place into seventh, but 4 ponts from the play-offs. The other member to get two 3 ponters this week was Lewis_1, the wins for Palace and Swansea, to show he still has what is needed to make a play-off challenge.

THE TABLES (134 out of 280 played)
(Tie-breaker: Most 3 pointers, and then the first to post)

Week 18 Fixtures It is FA Cup 3rd Round weekend, and I was hoping to keep those fixtures exclusively for the Happy Cup, but with postponed fixtures from Week 17 now making it a 10 game week, there are not enough known league games to be able to do that. So we have one game from the Cup, Chorley v Derby. This game will be settled on the 90 minute result. DON'T FORGET THE DEADLINE THIS WEEK IS 12.15. If you are too late for the early kick-offs still predict the other fixtures.

CHORLEY v DERBY COUNTY (FA CUP 12.15) After a number of Derby players tested positive for Covid-19, they will put out a mixture of U23 and U18 players for this game.

CAMBRIDGE UNITED v HARROGATE TOWN
CARLISLE UNITED v LEYTON ORIENT POSTPONED Due to a frozen pitch
