Super U's to continue their good Christmas form with victory over the Dons 15:44 - Dec 29 with 1453 viewsdurham_exile

Boxing Day saw the U’s get the monkey of their back with the first Away League victory of the season at the Priestfield Stadium.

Not only has it given the whole team a lift, but also it means that they can press on with some more vital Home victories. The first starting tonight against AFC Wimbledon at the JCS.

Whilst I have been reluctant to show the league table for some weeks, it may be worth checking out the positions with some key matches coming up in the New Year.

Orient 22 52
Stevenage 22 45
Northampton 22 43
Carlisle 22 36
Swindon 23 35
Mansfield 22 35
Barrow 22 35
Walsall 21 33
Bradford 21 33
Salford 21 32
Stockport 21 31
Wimbledon 22 31
Doncaster 22 31
Tranmere 22 30
Sutton 23 29
Grimsby 21 27
Crewe 20 25
Newport 22 23
Harrogate 21 22
Crawley 22 21
Hartlepool 22 18
COL U 22 17
Rochdale 21 15
Gillingham 21 14

The significance of the table is that our next 7 games are as follows:

Wimbledon H
Swindon H
Harrogate A
Rochdale A
Gillingham H
Salford H
Hartlepool A

Frankly season defining games and four of the seven are against fellow relegation candidates.

Now it is becoming clear that we are suffering some horrific injuries at present. First Alan Judge and now Mattie Longstaff. Similarly, Bez Lubala has suffered a long-term injury or certainly an absence and more recently Sam Hornby and Alex Newby have missed vital games.

The only good news is that Ossama Ashley is able to play again after his undeserved sending off recently. We are putting a bid together for MK Dons midfield player Dan Kemp. The war chest might also have funds for a striker. Even with the injury to Longstaff we do seem to have a surfeit of midfield players but perhaps Kemp has skills the others do not.

Now back to tonight’s game. Former U’s stalwart Johnnie Jackson brings his Wimbledon side fresh from their Boxing Day draw against Newport County. It also gives us the chance to be reunited with Harry Pell and Courtney Senior. The Dons also have Kyle Hudlin available after his red card was rescinded after the dismissal was deemed wrongful on appeal.

Junior Tchamadeu put in another MOTM performance at Gillingham and Noah Chilvers put in his best performance of the season.

All of which leads us with the quandary of just who will line up for the U’s this evening.

MB might be tempted to start with a 3,5,2 formation:

O’Hara

Chambers Smith Dallison

Tchamadeu Skuse Chilvers Ashley Kazeem

Akinde Tovide

Subs:
Collins Hannant Eastman Sears Chesters Fevrier Huws

Weather tonight will be clear, cloudy and 6 degrees Celsius at the JCS.

A decent holiday crowd can be anticipated with a good number from SW London.

The U’s to win 3-1 with Chilvers, Tovide and Ashley on the scoresheet.

Once again iFollow is available for those unable to attend.

Enjoy the game.

Noah it all comes down to taking our chances and we are not doing so.

What really chokes me is the celebrations by the Wimbledon players and staff you would think they have won the league.

Gillingham now 2-1 down.

They were the same at Wimbledon, especially Pell. But maybe that is what is wrong with us? Too many ex-Ipswich just here for one last pay cheque? Unemotional? Lacking pride? I think this is the worst squad in decade. Humes out!

Snatched defeat from the jaws of victory.

Same old Col U - look reasonably comfortable and then collapse.

Would like to see their goals again as from E6 it looked like defensive issues again.

Cold at the stadium

Roll on 2023 - surely it cannot be worse than 2022.

TS - I think MB made a mistake taking off both strikers on 83 mins and bringing on Sears.
We lost the impetus that the two strikers had given us.

Once again a late goal has cost us the game. When the ball came back from O'Hara's save there were three strikers that beat the defenders to the ball.

Similarly we were slow to the first goal.

However Big John was desperately unlucky with his effort that hit the post and Huws effort was cleared off the line.

Must go again against Swindon. It is going to be a long second half of the season.

After the game MB claimed legs for Big John and Tovide had gone as had worked so hard during the game.
Was it wrong not to start with Hughes I wonder?

When they went a goal down Wimbledon went to plan B - hoofing up to a very tall player whose only football skills were heading. Which he did very well to their advantage. We took off our big boys and put on three smaller ones. The mistake tonight was not having another tall player on the bench. Where was Eastie ?
We deserved to win up to 70 minutes but then didn't deal with the high balls hoofed out from the Wimbledon defence.

All planets visible in the solar solar system the previous night, but 24 hrs on the brightest in the sky must have been new planet vanarama .
A life on mars display by the U’s, from WB to MB , defensive errors continue, subs brought on too late, and concede late.
The only difference, will not get out of these perennial problems this time.

Oh the game, more pushing than football, the ref did well to keep 22 men on, the goals conceded, players not using the experience they have accredited over the years .

This is what happens when you're down the bottom and bereft of form and confidence. At 1-0 if we're Wimbledon that shot comes off the post and goes in. If we're Wimbledon O'Hara's spilled shot goes to a defender not an attacker. If we're Wimbledon that late shot from Huws finds it's way through and into the goal. As I've said before most teams in this division are very similar in terms of ability and it comes down to momentum and confidence. It's no surprise that the team that hadn't lost in nine league matches came back to take all three points. Even at 1-0 down they probably had more belief than we did. The big problem we have is that we'll only get confidence from getting results and without confidence getting results is a big ask. Last night just gave our confidence another battering. I keep thinking that if we can win two or three games in a row or go unbeaten in six or something then we'll be ok but we generally seem to follow a positive result with a defeat and the momentum is lost again.

Totally agree RSC. The fine difference is clubs halfway up expect to beat the four/ five teams labouring at the bottom.
To get a run going we must first eradicate mistakes, which was evident last night, but when the game was opened up, felt there was only one winner, which was not us .
