Sound levels - Layer Road v Jobserve Community Stadium 07:43 - Jun 5 with 716 viewsSparkfilmsTV

I was looking ( and listening ) to some footage we took in front of Terrace 3 and Terrace 4 during evening matches against Watford and Preston during our final season at Layer Road.

The shape of the roof construction of the stands at Layer Road
amplified sound, this together with the closeness to the pitch created the atmosphere many of us came to cherish.

I can't imagine this was ever a thought when the roofing was constructed at Layer Road. The shape of the roofing at The Jobserve Community Stadium allows much of the sound to escape.

On other occasions we recorded sound in front of the Barside area, this too was high in volume.

Layer Road did give Colchester United an advantage against certain opposition and in particular matches over the years. This is something that cannot be replicated in the new build, which since we moved there has never offered an advantage.

It's just an observation. We had to move, and this had been planned for many years.

A shame though that the 'super stand' and redevelopment of the Barside area did not come to fruition. That may well have given us even more of a home advantage.

Something else that came up while visiting Chelmsford last week was a look back to the Golden Age of the Sixties for football clubs along the A12 corridor, not to mention the former grounds that they adorned.

Younger fans may not be aware of the achievements of Romford, Brentwood, Chelmsford City and Clacton Town. These clubs won Championship titles in what was then the Southern League and The Southern League First Division.

Romford's 'Brookland's' ground and Chelmsford City's 'New Writtle Street' both offered an atmospheric backdrop to proceedings on the pitch.

Romford and Chelmsford City destroyed Colchester United when the Essex Professional Cup was respected as a tournament in the mid sixties with Romford once beating us 8-3 at Brooklands and The Clarets beating us 6-3 at New Writtle Street'.

On both occasions Colchester United put out just about their strongest side available. The crowd for the New Writtle Street encounter was around 6,500. Imagine that kind of crowd turning up for an Essex Senior Cup match.

Those days will never return, but a local derby with Chelmsford City may linger on the horizon.

Let’s not forget Harwich and Parkeston who reached the Amateur Cup final 1953 at Wembley but sadly lost too Pegasus 6-0, so possibly played in the highest crowd attendance of any Essex side of 100.000. Harwich reached the final playing every round away from home. Pegasus were actually a University side made up of Oxford and Cambridge blues .
