Super U's seeking the right chemical formula to defeat the Sulphurites 12:27 - Oct 21 with 1052 viewsdurham_exile

After the humiliation at FGR last weekend a much-changed Colchester side defeated Cambridge in the EFL Trophy. A degree of confidence would have been gleaned from the Abbey Stadium victory. Today the U’s play host to the Sulphurites.

Harrogate Town boss Simon Weaver is looking to inflict more misery on the U’s but today must surely see the U’s gaining three valuable points against a team that have previously struggled at the JCS.

Sadly, Joe Taylor has sustained a hamstring injury and could be out for 4-6 weeks. A real blow to a struggling team but the opportunity exists for Bradley Ihionvien to stake a starting claim alongside Samson Tovide.

Owura Edwards must also start up front albeit on the wing in a 4,3,3 formation.

The defence has been a concern of late with a couple of 5-0 defeats and goals being leaked like a sieve recently.

So, let’s try the following today:

Goodman

Egbo Mitchell Hall Dallison

Fevrier McGeehan Cooper

Tovide Ihionvien Edwards

Subs
Smith Greenidge Chilvers Bandeira Kazeem Kennedy Hopper

With Lawrence and Kells still injured but back soon to massively strengthen the team better days are around the corner, but there can be no slip ups against the Sulphurites today.

Weather today in Colchester a mild 15 degrees Celsius but further rain showers on what must be a sodden surface.

Storm Babet has wreaked havoc pretty much everywhere and it is hoped that the covers have protected the surface over the past few days.

Frankly the game needs to be played and Colchester require a win. I’m going for an optimistic 3-0 with Tovide, Edwards and Ihionvien on the scoresheet.

Once again we are inconsistent this season and after flirting with relegation over the past three seasons, we are desperate to start to turn things around. No we simply must turn things around.

BG’s fate is still uncertain, the performance at FGR was not only unacceptable but the unpalatable scenes between players and some supporters at the end of the game suggests that there is disarray in the ranks and the long-suffering faithful are reaching the end of their tether.

No-one likes to see ugly scenes or dissent. What we need today is the for the diehard supporters to get behind the team at the JCS but we need to see a united front from the players and BG must identify his strongest XI. He has been unlucky with injuries and the latest involving Joe Taylor is perhaps the most frustrating of all. Taylor looked a 20 goals a season man but he has not been at his best for the past two games and with some time on the sidelines he must return renewed and more importantly must receive the service to feet that he craves.

When all are fit I would suggest:
Goodman
Lawrence, Kelleher, Hall, Dallison
Fevrier Read Chilvers
Taylor Tovide Edwards

With Smith, Mitchell, Egbo Kazeem McGeehan, Ihionvien and Cooper on the bench.
Offers the best side but we are some weeks from that formation.

In the meantime

Enjoy the game

Your future team has four centre backs on the pitch. Don’t forget we’ve got Iandolo to return as well. I’m not sure on our best formation let alone team and I still think we’re missing that defensive screen in the midfield. I wonder whether a 4-5-1 might give us a better balance and make us more solid or maybe a 3-5-1-1.

BBC are suggesting a 4-4-2 with a diamond in midfield. Egbo at left back.

Brad is playing instead of Sammy.😁. I wonder what caused the late change.

Losing 2-1 minutes to go and for BG I expect.

Things can only surely get better.

Another defeat and now dropping into the bottom two.

Just what is going on at our club

Shocking.

Att 3132 including 94 from Harrogate.

A new low for the U's a fourth successive defeat and Harrogate's first win at the JCS.

Grim times indeed.

A poor defeat, despite an improved performance, but just not good enough. Not enough urgency, particularly in the first half, and yet again a complete inability to hold on to a lead which at the time we just about deserved.

Questions are being asked, does Ben Garner have the answers, or is that now down to Robbie Cowling? I foolishly said in the blog that with FGR's game postponed they couldn't at least overtake us today. Sadly they did, without even having to kick a ball.

Another poor defeat.
We are in real trouble.
Lack of experince is costing us.
Why wasn't Hornby in goal?
Time running out for Garner.

Beaten by a lesser side again, great... Time for Garner to become a goner as far as the U's manager goes...

It’s not you do with the ball, it’s what you don’t do without it. Another expert demonstration of kicking yourself in the foot. Actually the U’s played quite well today, but only rare glimpses of playing on the front foot. Visiting keeper the most busy but did not concede two goals.
But the first half BG, uninspired and simple possession lost through lack of concentration and thoughtlessness.

Afterthoughts

At half time the discussion was of no progression from several seasons having watched a half of possession without substance and playing without pace. Lack of movement to create space or forwarded press was not substantiated, all traits we had been critical of before.
Listened to post match players and BG interviews last few weeks, seems the players were asked to express themselves and be responsible, but were also not taking on instruction.

Technically the team is better than before but like previous managers BG was unable physiologically instil concentration to play at 100% for 100% of the time in a physical and positive state.
The skill is their but the substance seems not.

Having watched the short highlights it seems that Greenidge is at fault for both goals although other players don't cover themselves in glory for either. Once again individual errors are costing us again and their winner was a very impressive finish as well.
