Red Dragons to lack fire-power in surprise home defeat to Super U's 17:30 - Dec 15 with 2667 viewsdurham_exile

This Saturday sees the U’s playing at the Racecourse Ground for the first time since 2005. I was amazed by this stat. Over the years I have been to the Racecourse ground many times and on balance we have drawn and won as many games as we have lost.

Perhaps one of the most bizarre games was on 24 March 1990 when in front of 4653 supporters we lost 3-2 after leading twice and would have won had it not been for a bizarre storm which interrupted play with the U’s 2-1 to the good but in torrential rain and very windy conditions Wrexham came back on to secure an equaliser and a last-minute winner.

Tomorrow will of course be challenging but I reckon we can secure a 3-2 win but only if ME is brave in team selection and we do not sit back as we did at Stockport recently.

Our last game was of course another defeat to Crawley and ME lined up thus:

Goodman
Mitchell Kells Egbo
Greenidge McGeehan Read Jay Fevrier
Taylor Tovide

Subs:
Tovide off Akinde on 54
Greenidge off Chilvers on 77
Jay off Cooper on 77

Now ME has some players potentially back notably Ellis Iandolo and Connor Hall but he has lost Tovide for 2-3 months with an ankle injury.

I don’t think either of the returning players will start the game and so just how brave will ME be. I suspect sadly he will play a lone striker, which is a massive mistake.

At the start of the season, I suggested that Taylor and Tovide could be the next Bannister and Warboys (Smash and Grab) from those halcyon Bristol Rovers days. The managers since August 2023 have not played them as a pairing unfortunately and Taylor has often cut a lonely figure up front.

ME has the opportunity to pair Akinde or Ihionvien with Taylor in a genuine two striker role.

He also has to decide whether Chilvers can be starting again and whether Sam Hornby (rightly recalled from the NL) will become the reserve keeper again.

He also has to consider whether Zach Mitchell deserves a break having started so many games recently. However along with Kells he is our best defender.

So, the line up suggests:

Goodman

Mitchell Kells Egbo

Fevrier McGeehan Read Jay

Chilvers

Taylor Ihionvien

Subs
Hornby Akinde Cooper Iandolo Hall Bandeira Hopper

Now this site, Facebook pages and other locations have all descended into doom and gloom.
13 defeats tells its own story and is the reason that we are where we are.

Time for ME to man up and start to play positively rather than this timid playing out from the back which gives the opposition the impetus and leads to uncertainty and fragility at the back.

This weekend is the golden opportunity for Chilvers to live up to his own reputation and start to play as he suggested he could two years ago.

ME must be bold and make some important changes as identified and start to play a settled side notwithstanding the injuries that have plagued us this season.

Two of our better players Lawrence and Tovide are both out for some time and when Iandolo and Hall are fully match fit they will surely return to the starting side. In the meantime, I would go with the side as indicated and that means Greenidge must be dropped. He is like marmite and every time he plays I want him to succeed but he always seems unsure and lacks confidence.

Wrexham with Parky and Aidan Davison (Goalkeeping coach) at the helm will provide stiff competition but with 1000 of the faithful present we must be brave and take the game to the Red Dragons.

One thing is sure there will be rather more than the 2391 who witnessed our last appearance at the Racecourse in 2005. Their fourth stand is up but not yet open for business.

The weather at Wrexham will be dry and a mild 12 degrees Celsius. Ideal for football in mid-December.

Safe journey to the travelling faithful.

I am travelling with my youngest son and his partner. She does not watch football but has watched the Wrexham documentary and likes the Red Dragons as a result. Result she wants to see them. Worse she will probably want to purchase some Wrexham merchandise!!!!

Up the U’s

Durham - as always an inspirational post but on this occasion I wonder when posting you were under the influence of something

Tomorrow will of course be challenging but I reckon we can secure a 3-2 win ..........I very much doubt we will win let alone score 3. However history suggests we do weird and wonderful and at 6-1 I Have been tempted to part with £2 on an away win

Two of our better players Lawrence and Tovide are both out for some time......... Lawrence I will give you as one of our better players but Tovide? You must be drinking

Wrexham with Parky and Aidan Davison (Goalkeeping coach) at the helm will provide stiff competition but with 1000 of the faithful present .......... that would be amazing but I expect no more than 600 which is still a brilliant following

Worse she will probably want to purchase some Wrexham merchandise..........well tell her it is a long walk home

Have a great day. Sadly I have had to cancel my trip due to youngest daughter having emergency surgery

TS I really hope that your daughter recovers swiftly and well.

That very much puts football and everything else in the shade.

Health is number one.

Good to hear your daughter's home now TS, hope her recuperation is swift and complete in time for Xmas.

On the game, this is pretty good performance from the U's, but again undone by a set piece (albeit a Tozer long throw). Keep this up against 10 men in the second half please U's.

Only listening to BBC Essex bit seem to be playing well until final third

There is still a chance that my 6-1 for an away win will happen

How much longer are we going to rely on a clueless and naive defence? IMO Etherington has used his last chance. Plus if we finish in the bottom 5 its time for Clowning to sell up to someone who knows what they are doing and doesn't gamble on failed projects.

A disappointing result, but definitely not a disappointing performance. I do get weary of saying we deserved something from a game, but today we really did. Heyho, we go again on Friday at home to former moneybags Salford City, it goes without saying it's a must-win game, but then again every game we're playing right now is a must-win.

Well done to the 650+ travelling supporters, hope you all got your trains home in time!

Been a difficult travel day Wessex.

Coach C broke down 40 miles short of Wrexham. Coach B carried on ,while A stopped to assist. Eventually A proceeded, and one of A or B then rescued those stranded on C just in time for kick off. Not sure about how C passengers are getting home (one assumes a replacement coach, but only two in the current convoy).

Half Time, .an P A announced came, last train south at 17-20. Not sure why all later are cancelled. Fortunately station is only two minutes walk from the ground.

Coaches then held up for nearly 30 minutes because a young Wrexham fan hurdled a gate that fell on a car injuring him. But now on the move.

Mixed views on the bus. I thought we played really well and didn’t get the breaks. I don’t know what the youngsters expect, but there are many who think we were awful. It’s not good, but don’t think it’s a time to panic. .

Sorry to hear your collective travel woes Noah, hope the Coach C chaps are already on their way home!

My assessment of the game is exactly the same as yours, but we can't deny that there is, again, a groundswell of opinion that want Matty (and Robbie) out of our club. Too soon for a panic reaction for me, but it'll be interesting to hear others (Durham?) view of the game.

Game finished 90 minutes ago. Coach C people are apparently still at the ground waiting for a replacement. Coach A and B making good progress.

Team coach also hasn’t left Wrexham. I don’t suppose Etherington is distributing Xmas cards, but I guess talk about the sack isn’t only about Santas.

Like many I haven't been to Wrexham since 2005 and had forgotten just what a shit hole the ground is.

At half time I bought three pies and queued 25 minutes for the privilege. Small kiosk dispensing snacks right next to the toilets. An absolute disgrace.

Wrexham are a dirty team and should have been down to 9 men
Some of the worst tackles I have seen for years.

Shocking viewing position.

ME I'm afraid must go. Played Joe Taylor on his own up front again.

What does Ihionvien have to do to get more than 5 minutes.

I am still incandescent Colchester should have won the game on chances.

More to follow when I have calmed down tomorrow.

Good journeys both ways by car and parking at the Uni was good.

Before the game Stuart's partner went to the club shop and bought a Wrexham Panda
Worse I had to carry it in my Colchester ruck sack!

I was speaking to Wrexham supporters before the game about previous games and remembering encounters over the years.

Nice touch from Parky applauding the 665 faithful after the game.

I am sick and tired watching yet another defeat that we should have definitely got something from.

Up the U's
