The Jason Wilcox Myth 13:44 - Mar 14 with 1336 viewsButty101

I’ve read several times that he did a good job for us and steadied the ship. He was only here 10 months and partway through got his head turned . We sold a bucket load of players and spent 20mill on Stewart and Charles. They played a very small part in us getting backup.
So what exactly was his success?

The loan signings got us promoted.

Harwood-Bellis, Downes, Fraser, Rothwell and Brooks all made an impact.

Holgate was the only dud out of the loan signings.

You are not alone in thinking this. His modus operandi was it seemed, to buy Man City academy players. I struggle to believe we’d be doing much better with him still here. Perhaps those trumpeting his influence know more than us about what he was doing behind the scenes.

Are those trumpeting his success from the club? I doubt it.

I think his success is not being involved with the dross that we signed after he left!

I can’t remember how long he was with us for, it didn’t seem a particularly long time? From memory, only Lavia was a success from the signings I remember being attributed to him.
Sports Republic are only interested in signings costing up to £15M so even if he’d still been here I can only assume that we’d be making more of the same signings.
Perhaps he did have a big influence behind the scenes. His leaving seems to be linked by some for a big factor in our current malaise.

Lavia came the year before Wilcox.

Wilcox gave us Ross Stewart and Charles as the big signings ....

Under Wilcox we brought in permanently

Manning - this was more a Martin signing, for a free transfer he had been a reasonable signing.

Shea Charles- Started 15 plus 17 as sub in the League, a reasonable signing who looks set to play a big part next season.

Joe Lumley - Free transfer so just a back up.

Ross Stewart - A gamble that didn't pay off so not good value for money

On loan

David Brooks - played a part in our promotion

Flynn Downes- Big part of our promotion

Taylor Harwoood-Bellis - Big part of our promotion.

Ryan Fraser- Big part of our promotion

Mason Holgate - Not a big part but in his final League game was man of the match against West Brom, Russell martin just didn;t want to play him, preferring Jack Stephens

What Wilcox did was stuff that you don't see, he was a figurehead in persuading people to come and play for the club, after he went we had no one, signing players was difficult because they and their agent could see that we were rudderless, they were not speaking to someone running the footballing side who knew the game.

If Wilcox had stayed I think we would have had a better chance of staying up, someone who would have taken a difficult decision in sacking Martin a lot earlier instead of letting it drift, someone big enough to tell the manager that his system was not working.

Now hopefully in Johann Spors we have someone who will be able to do all of that

I thought we got Martin because he played the style of football Wilcox wanted us to play? I’m not so sure he would have told Martin his system wasn’t working if it aligned with his vision.

The points you make about him being a figurehead, I can see his value somewhat there but since departing his legacy hasn’t seen us shining so perhaps as the OP stated, there’s a bit of a myth about him.

It’s easy to say he did things in the background that we don’t see. Proving it either way is another thing. Southampton were always going to be a draw in the championship for players that are not quite good enough for the premiership.

I really can’t agree on Shea Charles. 10mill on a player in the championship is a big deal . From March (when Wilcox was tapped up) he barely got a look in . In fact he only started a Couple games at the end of the season, when automatic promotion had gone. In one of those games he got hooked at halftime.

Maybe he will be better now he’s had a full season in the championship. But I doubt we were at the time buying a player for when we again got relegated from the premiership.

How good Wilcox would have been at Saints will never be known, but he was a football man in charge of the playing side of things and we have lacked that since he left, perhaps if Wilcox had stayed, Martin would have had a wise shoulder to lean on, perhaps Wilcox would have advised him to buy some bigger stronger players rather than midgets, or suggest that he watered down the possession football game to suit the opposition.

We made some good signings this season (Yes some average ones as well) but we didn't buy the leadership and strength that we needed.

You make a very good point there, Pat. If you want a Championship promotion season, good loan signings from Premier League clubs are often the answer. Our loan of Nathan Tella to Burnley, for example, was the main reason they won the Championship.

personally i think Wilcox was just as big a problem as Martin proved to be,luckily he got his exit ticket stamped before he damaged his reputation
