| We’re doomed I tell ye, Dooomed! 10:08 - May 4 with 1374 views | TAFKAT | https://www.bbc.com/sport/foot Quite a depressing read and all to make a few rich people a lot richer, while the rest of us sit on our hands and let it happen. I’ve banged on about it before, but from my 92 exploits, the atmosphere at most Premiershite games nowadays is very, very poor. The wealthy, popcorn eating, tourist fans are just there to provide a backcloth for the TV coverage. Even places like Anfield and St. James’ Park are fake. Walk-on and Blayden Races blaring out on the PA before the game to make you think the fans are actually singing. A couple of years ago, to get a seat at Anfield I had to pay well over the odds for one of the many thousands of ‘hospitality’ tickets. You sit there surrounded by wealthy people from all corners of the globe that have flown in just to post their mug shot on social media, or by corporate scroungers with no idea about footy. It was very telling when ‘Walk-on’ was pumped out of the speakers and it gets to a lull in the song after the first verse/chorus. Everyone around me starts clapping like demented seals because they think that’s it, but even I knew there was another verse to come. The only hope is that the big 6 piss off and join a World Soccer Series and take the tourists and overpaid actors with them and leave what’s left to the rest of us. Although, I guess it is better to have loved and lost….. [Post edited 4 May 10:13]

If you wanted to come up with a way of killing off any last resemblance of an atmosphere in the stadium, then VAR is your solution. It might be fine on TV, but in the grounds, it's always booed and accompanied by the F##k VAR chant, often by the fans that might benefit from a decision. [Post edited 4 May 10:22]

I think the point has been made by others, there is no way the lower leagues could afford the infrastructure to allow VAR, so we're hopefully safe from that for the time being. However, I do think there's a possibility that the GIS trackers that all footballers wear could be used to provide real-time feedback in questionable offside decisions?

Possibly, but why bother? It will be faulty at times and what does it achieve? As long as decisions average themselves out over a season, it doesn't affect my enjoyment, in fact arguing about decisions is part of the fun. I watch footy for fun, not to enter into some activity where lawyers and technology must ensure that the correct outcome is delivered at all times. With the increase in AI, it is quite feasible that you won't need refs at all in 20 years. If you can have driverless cars, then ref-less football would be simple in comparison, but what's the point? The FA managed to get by for 155 years without VAR and the world didn't stop turning. Is the enjoyment better for having it? In your other forms of entertainment, when you go to the Opera for example, do you want a computer to check that the singer hits every note perfectly. If they don't do you want to stop the show and repeat that bit? Football is just 22 people hoofing a ball around to provide a bit of fun for the rest of us. Anyone that takes it more serious than that has lost the plot.
