It's got nothing to do with "being in the 70's" - Alf Garnet style. It was a reference to a joke implying a monkey could do a better job than a human and in order for the monkey to perform better, it needed feeding. It was being paraphrased implying that we need to feed the forward line to get them to do better.
I agree though it shouldn't have been said, mainly because 99% of people wouldn't get it and now the press can have a frenzy when they should get behind the team, but we know all they are interested in is 'sales'.

I'm more worried about the player that leaked it to the journalist. To have a snake in the camp, is more worrying. ________________________________________________________
Barton is right, this is the most important part of the story, and whoever it is, his England career should be over IMO..
It Is What It Is !!

To be honest the biggest controversy here is Roy's got 15 minutes team talk in the biggest fixture of his life and he spends probably 12 minutes of it making a simple point in the most feeble and convoluted way humanly possible. Not exactly Sir Alf Ramsey is it...

No, no, no!
Never take account of what JB tweets.
He might even be right, but he's only giving oxygen to a fire that don't deserve it.
Sadly we get the Media, Press and Accuracy of reporting that our culture deserves. Joey Barton piping up just shows how important this story is. Walker at the BBC is just blowing wind onto a very feeble fire to get some more weasley quotes out of those present, nearby or willing to offer an opinion. No doubt there will be more, when isn't there? by the time the journo's have handpicked their quotes Roy Hodgson will be up as a candidate to replace Tommy Robinson at the EDL. Obviously managing Switzerland will have it's background in Nazi Gold and the industrial genocide of several minority groups throughout Europe and the world. Roy is sadly merely guilty of inappropriate use of an historical quote as nobody in the changing room would understand the context due to their age. In every other industry employees and in all western cultures people are having to modify and learn new ways of speaking due to PC'ness and anti-racism laws or conventions, why shouldn't the Manager of the England Football Team? As for Joey Barton why doesn't he shut the fxck up! He's beginning to sound like a sad little man who missed his chance and is trying to build himself a place in the rotten heart of media and opinion..

Here we are fast approaching page 3 on a debate about the England manager and you slag off a football player / fan for debating about the England situation.
JB should do as we say not do as we do, is that right ?

Didn't QPR fans used to say "Feed the Pelican and he will score"? Was this not a paraphrase on the 'feed the monkey' joke?
Again, I agree Roy shouldn't have said it but it shows how easily and quickly people are so ready to play the "that's racialist" card without thinking first.
Years ago a mate of mine was driving around a supermarket car park and a stone chip pinged off his wheel and hit a car just as the owner was standing next to it. He started having a go at my mate and my mate was trying to calm him down by saying it wasn't exactly anything he could have done about it. The bloke (a black guy) carried on having a go and my mate, somewhat frustrated, said "ok, ok, don't get out of your tree".
Now, as we all know, it's a common saying (source = http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=out%20of%20your%20tree) but the bloke took it completely out of context and went mental and it took further talking and explantion to calm him down before the bloke realised what my mate meant.
My mate realised afterwards he shouldn't have said it but it was such a subconcious thing in the heat of the moment.
As always, it's up to us to think of other cultures feelings when really it needs to work both ways. How about they learn about things we have said historically, or at very least factor in there may be a rational reason behind it, and then realise the context before jumping to immediate (and often incorrect) conclusions?

this is absolutley scandalous ! the Press (the Sun ) in particular are a disgrace, this is going to rumble on for ages especially now that the "black lawyers" (BTW isnt that rascist in itself) are now calling for an investigation etc this could lead to Roy maybe losing his job & players being accused of things they havent done causing possible Dressing Room unrest , excellent Preperation for a World Cup i think a total ban of th Sun is now needed by all Football Fans
And Bowles is onside, Swinburne has come rushing out of his goal , what can Bowles do here , onto the left foot no, on to the right foot
That’s there that’s two, and that’s Bowles

Agree.
If Roy had asked for chalk for a black board or a marker for the white board is he offending the other half of the squad??????
I agree that this has gone beyond the ridiculous. My understanding is that at the time, he did not spend 12mins telling them the whole story of "NASA, the astronaut and the monkey", he merely used the term "feed the monkey" when telling Smalling to keep it simple and get the ball forward to Townsend and he would then produce the goods. It was then pointed out to him later that what he said could have been interpreted as racist at which point he spoke to Andros (and perhaps Smalling) and explained where the expression had come from and they were very understanding of the fact.
Whilst there is an assumption that a player "grassed" Roy up to the press, there are more people in an around the changing room and tunnel to overhear comments and leak the story.
Finally, could it not be considered Ageist for the English media to openly attack a 66 year old man for using a metaphor common in his day (is that the right term?) and one that he was probably used to using throughout his adult life and for which the PC brigade decide must be considered racist because the word "monkey" was used in the presence of black people?
Don't get me wrong there is no surprise that a 20 something year old black footballer hearing his boss tell him to "feed the monkey" and intimate it to pass it to his black colleague would be shocked and taken aback, but once it was explained to him the context of the saying, then only someone with an axe to grind would not accept the explanation at face value.
Chris Coleman, take note for any future discussions at half time in the welsh dressing room!

don't be ridiculous. you're basically saying you can't say the word 'monkey' under any circumstances when addressing someone with a dark skin tone.
I'm afraid it does appear to be going that way and people shouldn't be naively dismissive of the fact. Remember the Clattenburg furore? Keep it buttoned at all times is what I was trying to say in the op,if anybody had bothered to read it or make sense of the allusion without voting with their bollocks.

Yes, we should think first but then other cultures should also think that there might be another meaning behind the saying.
It works both ways.

Public figures have to be very careful what they say these days, Hodgson I'm sure ain't a racist, but should have known better, imo !!
so what you're saying is he should be careful not to use the word 'monkey' because there are black players in the room?
Hodgson, bless him, probably wouldn't have linked monkey and Townsend in a million years along with most other right thinking people. To then be pulled up on this is disgraceful.
Like Barton says, there's a snake in the camp.

Really? Then why are people so twitchy when monkey noises are made at matches?Surely someone in football management can't make the connection? It's just so desperately naive.
