From today's EADT, Mr Cowling's comments on the McGreal's appointment. "I do like to try and develop the talent we have within the building and to appoint from within, both in terms with the young players and the coaches and other staff" "When we found ourselves managerless, just before Christmas, we were sort of unable to do it really (to appoint within)" "We had great coaches in the building, people like John (McGreal), but the club didn't really have a structure at that point in which it could help these great coaches become great managers" "As you are aware, Tony (Humes) came back as director of football and we have worked really hard over the last few months to put in place the structure in the club that will allow us, whenever there is a change of manager, to look at some of the good coaches that we have got, and to appoint them and give them the support they need." "With that work in place, perhaps this appointment arrived a little bit sooner than we had expected" "We were able to offer the job to John, and this time around he has felt confident with the structure we've got in place to take the role" "It's a first team coach role, so it's a little bit different to what we have done before" "But John will be responsible for all footballing matters. There will be no interference with picking the team, or with his tactics" May I suggest to Messrs Izzet and Duguid that they apply for jobs at the Academy, as advancing through the ranks is now the only route available if they want to manage the first team. | |
