|De Boer sacked after 5 games|
at 14:37 11 Sep 2017
Lost all 4 in the PL but they did beat the Farmers in the League Cup. Can't help but think the Palace board have been rather hasty, either in appointing De Boer in the first place or sacking him before he's had a real chance to impose himself on the first team squad.
|Set up to fail?|

Following the (temporary) departure of Tony Humes the chairman said that perhaps he had set him up to fail. He also said he had learned from the experience and would have to do more to ensure such a situation wouldn't happen again.
Based on the transfer activity over the summer I had serious concerns for this season. I accept it's only three games played but I'm afraid what I've seen so far has done nothing to alleviate those concerns.
We don't look like scoring, we can't defend, injuries are a problem again. There is an absence of leadership on the pitch as well as limited experience. It feels to me that the momentum from the end of last season has evaporated totally. We have taken a significant step backwards when we were primed to move forwards.
I'm thinking McGreal has a far tougher job than last season and I feel quite sorry for him. The question is can he turn things around or has he, in fact, been set up to fail?

I happened to meet a Huddersfield Town employee at the Oval on Friday and asked him what he thought of Pyke. Seemed pretty certain he would not make the grade with them, even if they drop back back to the Championship. Pyke is now on a season long loan at Port Vale so it will be interesting to see if he is any better for them than he was for us.

The season hasn't started yet so we don't know what our form on the pitch will be but it seems we are already up and running in terms of injuries.
Prosser is out for at least six weeks following another operation last week. Funny that the club announced his visit to the specialist as getting the all clear to step up training but make no mention of what actually happened.
Loft also injured again. For a player who has been injury plagued throughout his career and has made just 12 appearances in the last two years it doesn't come as a big surprise.
Guthrie yet to play in preseason but at least no reports of anything new.
Dickenson now looking at late February for possible return which is a bit later than predicted initially.
No doubt we will add to this thread...but not much I hope.

Two year deal.
We now look even thinner in the forward department.

As well as Gillingham and Scumend we also face Reading U11 team. Splendid.

Just been announced that Aston Villa have signed John Terry.
A former colleague of mine, who until recently lived on the same road as Mr Terry, got to know him quite well over the years. Suffice to say he was not a fan!
I look forward to welcoming him to WHCS...if he plays.

Or is it?
Little or no activity during the transfer window shouldn't be a big surprise to Us fans but this year feels very quiet indeed. Two players released, one gone on a free transfer, no deals done with those offered new contracts and no new signings.
Is any of this a cause for concern or do fans have faith that the club has it all under control? McGreal claimed in the media recently that Colchester Utd is a club for which players are keen to sign. He may be right but there is no obvious evidence to support his comments at the moment.

In view of the action take by a number of Qatar's near neighbours is it now time time for FIFA to concede that this is, and never was, a fit and proper venue for the the World Cup?
(Boris Johnson has come out in support of Qatar which rather persuades me they are firmly in the wrong)

I confess I was somewhat ambivalent when I first heard about this but Sam Allardyce has called the proposals "utter rubbish" and put forward a very limp case for why it shouldn't happen. Thanks Sam...I'm now all for it!
