Meadow Lane it is today - come on the U's 07:52 - May 5 with 1106 viewsdurham_exile

So the curtain comes down on another season in league one.

A season that for many games looked to have petered out only to be rekindled at the Valley on that exceptional night, sadly we returned to type with a string of high profile draws and unfortunate defeats — Walsall and Bury were inexcusable.

At least last week’s victory against Tranmere Rovers restored some pride and gave the U’s the chance to reach 60 points for the season.

Now checking the league table confirms that Colchester have finished 12-15 points short of where we could have finished — those drawn games proving costly. However 6th spot is very much up for grabs for the Magpies:

Stevenage is in the box seat with plus 22 goal difference and 70 points whilst our hosts today also have 70 points but a vastly inferior GD of plus 9. Of course if both teams slip up then Carlisle on 69 points and a zero GD could creep in.

It is up to Colchester to be the party poopers in front of a large County crowdand search for the elusive away victory that will confirm our 10th place finish and also ensure we finish with 62 points (probably 12 points less than we could have managed) .

So JW needs to get his formation right. Nothing to lose, 4-4-2 with nothing but positive thoughts:

Williams

Wilson Magnus Eastman White

Izzet Bond Woody Henderson

Odejayi Gillespie

Subs:

Heath, Hamilton, Sears (to play if Gillespie not match fit), Doogie, O’Toole

Please, please get rid of Rose.

On another point I know that Martin Rowlands has been released but although he was injured (rather crocked at Wyscum) he was without doubt head and shoulders clear of any other midfield player when fit and it is a shame that we couldn’t have considered him for next season.

Should the Hammers get promoted then bring Freddie Sears back next season and play him as a striker not sitting on the half way line.

Now much has been made of Hooters where everything is in 36DD vision, but for those supporters who enjoy the more liquid pleasures (steady on) there is always a pint of Royal Salute from the Magpie Brewery to be savoured.

We need an opening day performance to match that at Deepdale to send the fithful home happy.

For all those travelling, safe journey enjoy the sunshine and hopefully the three points. U’s to prevail 2-1 in a pulsating match.

Up the U’s

Just in from shopping to note the team. An absolute disgrace.
JW stated before the game that we needed to show some integrity, perhaps John can show some this evening and walk away.

No strike force whatsoever.

They have rolled over - once again.

Ward out.

One might have been tempted to think that going into a game with 6 in midfield we might have been a bit more solid.

4-0 down after 51 minutes suggests not.

Just got back from Meadow Lane - 330 mile round trip - having watched a disgrace. Evidently, Ward just wanted to snatch a 0-1 (or draw) playing Hendo up front, totally isolated, supported by Bond and Rose both playing deep (rest of midfield defending). Why play a central midfielder (Bond) out wide?

Rose was abysmal, Williams dire. Why doesnt he stay on his line (at fault with the first three goals - especially the first (watch FL highlight programme). Ward's tactics appalling. Not until Odejayi replaced Rose and Sears replaced Bond (but others should have been substituted) did we look remotely intrested in scoring. By then, 4-0 down. OK, we had 10 shots, but those on target were from 25 yards, or a dribbling effort. Totally no venom (until Woody's fines strike on 90+3).

A surprisingly large contigent of U's fans sang their hearts out to the end - even when going at 4-0 down. We got great applause from many of the County fans that invaded the pitch at the end, and talking to many others in the pub later, we were told we had won their respect for getting behind our team in adversity. Once Stevenage went 2-0 up, County fans were leaving in droves, despite their team having a field day at our expense.

For much of the second half, we partied (despite being hammered), chanting "John Ward give us a wave". Did he, NO! Did he come across at the end of the game. NO (but did before game). I am afraid as far as I am concerned it's "John Ward for Hereford" (that's got a nice rhyme about it).

Noah - thanks for the update. I watched the goals on Sky, an absolute disgrace.

4-6-0 are we Scotland in disguise.

Why when we had nothing to lose did JW not line up more positively.

Good to hear the Col U supporters remained loyal.

JW out - don't even think he deserves poor old Hereford.

Total shambles.

Well Noah I admire your support of the U's and travelling to Notts. But no matter what u or any other supporter of the U's say's in our chairman's eyes to sum his thoughts up " The sun shines out of Ward's ? " I'm afraid all u have to look forward to is a season next of excuses and why we are struggling in Div 1. "O" of course a player by the name of Sears could be here as well.
Colchester has alway's been an attacking and played attractive football so be it Div3 stuff and now we are a negative booring outfit.

Me and two friends formed our own "drove" and left at half time and went back to the pub.
Absolute shambles, we should have had our admission money refunded if the team had any conscience. Williams was abysmal.
Still, looking forward to trips to Portsmouth and Shrewsbury next year.
