U'sual Champions League - The Final 18:30 - May 12 with 1889 viewswessex_exile

As it is now just two weeks away, here goes for the UCL final, between BFG and RSCOSWORTH, and 3rd place play-off between thrillseeker and mfb_cufc.

Saturday 26th May 2018
Real Madrid v Liverpool (1945 kick-off)

As usual, there are nine categories to predict. For categories C-H, as usual there will be 2pts if spot-on, but as a slight change this season, if neither get a spot-on, then there will be one point for whoever is closest (or 1pt each if equidistant).

 (A) Result - 3pts spot-on, 1pt for the outcome;
 (B) Goal scorer - pick one, get 1pt for each goal they score (including own goals);
 (C) Attempts on target - 2pts for spot-on, 1pt if closest;
 (D) Attempts off target - ditto;
 (E) Corners - ditto;
 (F) Fouls - ditto;
 (G) Yellow cards - ditto (a straight red is not two yellows); and
 (H) Red cards - ditto (two yellows will count as two yellows and one red).
 (TB) The tie-break is the minute for the first substitution, closest (either side) wins. In the unlikely event that there are no substitutions, this will be counted as 0 (zero) minutes. Note that for the final alone, a spot-on result will not count towards the tie-break, it's just the total points scored.

All predictions will be for the normal time match, extra-time or penalties will not count. The only questions you can't match exactly on are (A), (B) and (TB), so whilst there is no other advantage to predicting first, predicting last may mean having to change one or more of those predictions.

Please PM me your predictions, and I will reveal when they are all in. I will bump this thread nearer the time as a reminder to all.

All stats will be taken from the BBC Sport website, just in case there are discrepancies elsewhere.

Good luck everyone!

As Wessex has told me I’m last to predict I thought I’d put it directly on here.

(A) Result - 3pts spot-on, 1pt for the outcome; Liverpool 2 Real Madrid 1
(B) Goal scorer - pick one, get 1pt for each goal they score (including own goals); Salah
(C) Attempts on target - 2pts for spot-on, 1pt if closest; 11
(D) Attempts off target - ditto; 17
(E) Corners - ditto; 11
(F) Fouls - ditto; 22
(G) Yellow cards - ditto (a straight red is not two yellows); 7
(H) Red cards - ditto (two yellows will count as two yellows and one red). 0
(TB) The tie-break is the minute for the first substitution, closest (either side) wins. In the unlikely event that there are no substitutions, this will be counted as 0 (zero) minutes. Note that for the final alone, a spot-on result will not count towards the tie-break, it's just the total points scored. 56 minutes.

Let me know if any problems.

Breaking news - Salah is off injured!

Edit: bad news for RS's choice for goal scorer, but good news for the 30th minute substitution if the tie-break is needed.

:-)

So an update at half time as follows:

The final
BFG 5 v 5 RSCOSWORTH
As with the match itself, it's currently level pegging in the UCL final. BFG is scoring with closest to corners (currently 4), fouls (12) and yellow cards (0), and spot on with red cards (0). RS leads on attempts on target (2), attempts off target (14) and corners (4), and is also spot-on with red cards (0). With Salah's unfortunate early departure, RS currently has one hand on the trophy with the 30th minute substitution tie-break.

3rd place
thrillseeker 0 v 7 mfb_cufc
On paper, MFB is running away with this match at the moment, being closest for attempts on target (2) and off target (14), corners (4), fouls (12), and yellow cards (0), and spot-on for red cards (0). However, as the second half progresses, I'm expecting thrillseeker to start whittling away at that lead, and he does have the substitution tie-break in his back pocket if it's needed.

The whistle has been blown, and the Champions League final has finished:

Real Madrid (Benzema, Bale x2) 3 v 1 (Mane) Liverpool

A wonderful overhead strike from Bale was definitely the high point of the match, but the low point was assuredly a horror show from Karius between the sticks for Liverpool, and personally responsible for two of Real's three goals - as I'm sure Gerry would agree, goalkeeping is a very lonely profession when you perform like that.

In reverse order, the UCL results are as follows:

3rd place
thrillseeker 4 v 5 mfb_cufc
Both TS and MFB correctly predicted the Real Madrid victory, for a point apiece. As anticipated at half time, as the second half wore on, TS started picking up points for attempts off target, corners and fouls, but it was Lallana's injury time goal attempt that robbed him of 2pts as a spot-on, and thus 3rd place via the tie-break. Instead it was another incredible performance from MFB, scoring with the outcome, attempts on target, yellow cards, and the spot-on for red cards to be victorious in the 3rd place play-off.

The Final
BFG 6 v 5 RSCOSWORTH
As with the 3rd place match, the final really couldn't have been closer, with both players nip and tuck throughout. BFG picked up 1pt each for the Real victory, attempts off target, corners, and yellow cards, and 2pts for red cards. RS scored with attempts off target, also corners, and fouls, and also 2pts for the red cards. However, as with the 3rd place match, the final was really decided in injury time, with RS spot-on for fouls (and holding the tie-break), only to be denied 2pts by Asencio's 92nd minute foul (and thus the 23rd of the match).

However, success comes from narrow margins, and tonight BFG is worthy winner of the 2018 U'sual Champions League Final!

Congratulations everyone for a cracking competition, and particularly Champion BFG!

Second injury time defeat in a final in recent weeks. One day I’ll win something. Well done BFG on the victory and thanks to Wessex for running the competition. As a boyhood Liverpool fan this is doubly hard to take right now.

Thank you Wessex for administering.

Goalie howlers; though there will be none worse than the two last night....ever. And probably not a better goal either.

Happy summer everyone.
