Bescot blues for saddlers when Colchester ride into town today 10:46 - Dec 11 with 1122 views | durham_exile | The Super U’s head to the Midlands today for an interesting encounter against the Saddlers at the Bescot. But before we focus on the league match, the Colchester U18’s deservedly defeated their Premier League opposition in the form of Arsenal U18’s 3-0 at the JSCS last night. Lowe, Tovide and Bennett scored the goals, but Endurance Johnson was in imperious form between the sticks for the U’s. Newcastle United Away await in Round 4. So, Wednesday night saw another point gained on the road but still no goals in the last 5 league matches away from home. In truth we should have won the game with Judge and Sears guilty of misses plus their Keeper should have been sent off after handling outside of the box in the 89th minute. It is now 40 years since we lost at Valley Parade. Walsall by contrast are sitting 14th in the table and under manager Matt Taylor are struggling. Sadly, I won’t be there today, but I have been to the Bescot many times over the last years. Today offers both an opportunity to break the scoring duck and secure another Away win. I reckon 1-0 to the U’s will do the trick. Our seventh game in 21 days indicates what a punishing schedule it has been and with continuing injuries and outbreaks of COVID, the U’s like many other clubs are drawing on their reserves and fringe players. Keeping the senior players fit is a problem. However, the future of Syl Jasper must be under doubt after the petulance when he was substituted in the 41st minute at Bradford. I do hope that things can be patched up because he is a talented footballer, but we need the players to be united and to pull together. But do Fulham extend his loan with us because I cannot see him forcing his way into their first team any time soon. Let us hope that HM selects him today. As for the team I wouldn’t change much for the Bescot trip. Team: Turner Tchamadeu Chambers Smith Daniels Skuse Wiredu Chilvers Judge Jasper Sears Subs: Gerken McCoulsky Terry Hannant Coxe Dobra Cooper If Jasper is not available, then Dobra plays instead. Selected league positions: Top seven FGR 19 43 Northampton 20 37 PV 20 35 Exeter 20 33 Swindon 19 33 Sutton 20 32 Orient 20 31 14th Walsall 20 25 18th COL U 19 22 24th Scunny 20 15 The weather in Durham is dry but overcast and cold. The west side of the country will see rain today and the forecast for the Bescot at 3pm is 6 degrees Celsius with light rain and light winds. Take your Colchester umbrella to the game. After today we have some intriguing fixtures with Hartlepool Home next Saturday and then the game at the new Lawn against FGR on the 21 Dec before Orient come to the JSCS on Boxing Day. So, plenty to look forward to as the U’s try to climb the table to secure a top seven place. The war chest will come into force for that elusive striker in January. Safe journey to the travelling faithful. Enjoy the game Up the U’s

The Saddlers Club has gone bust, and is boarded up. No nearby pubs. Only consolation is Banks Mild in grotty bar under away end. No seats, still an hour before KO.

That's a shame Noah, the Saddlers was always one of the better stadium bars on my travels.

Seriously the purchase of a striker in January cannot come soon enough. 3-0 against a poor team. No goals in last six away games in the league Up the U's

Durham it's not just a striker that Colchester United need. Games like this highlight the deficiencies regularly aired on here. They remain and after six or seven slightly better performances here we are again with the reality of our predicament.

Shocking scoreline and result. All the recent good work undone against a poor team. Back to the drawing board. No away goals in the last 6 away league games. Nothing more to say, except pleased I didn't drive down to this horror show.

Look on the bright side (and it's difficult to find one this afternoon, I admit), at least we didn't go 1-0 up and end up getting (currently) spanked 4-1 - chin up Southend

And that is what the war chest is for in January. A centre forward to convert the chances and to lead the line and to play alongside Sears. Up the U's

Am dependent as had hoped we were on the up. Looking on the bright side we could have suffered the fate of Fort William in the Highland League! [Post edited 11 Dec 2021 17:13]

Just the 12-0 Burnsie Now that would have been a poor match for the Away side. Still another 3-0 away scoreline is disappointing to say the least. Up the U's

I can't remember reading that anybody from the club has said money made from the Cups this season is going to be spent on players in January. Unless Sears gets injured, I certainly can't see us signing a striker in January. We could extend McCoulksy's contract or wait on Folivi's fitness, and that is it. Personally I think the money made from Poku and the Cups is going to be used to make-up for the shortfall from getting 2,000 crowds.

Cowling said something about a "war chest" on an episode of Col U TV, but he didn't specify which war! I reckon that we will struggle on with a sole ambition of avoiding relegation whilst blaming Covid. Many former ST holders that instead have annual season match passes are frequently declining attending given they can get their money back, which is not possible with an ST. All they have to do is shout "covid". Like at Oldham, the fans are rejecting the status quo. Humes and De Souza out!

We were definitely promised that the proceeds from the Cup runs would be reinvested in a striker in January 2022. The club must honour this pledge and bring someone in who is going to translate chances into goals. Perhaps people are happy to tolerate results like the Bescot yesterday but it is unacceptable. The performance and result at Barrow was great and incredibly our last Away goals were scored then. Up the U's
