Chesterfield- what else is there 18:45 - Oct 19 with 193 viewsWitham

Others here know Chesterfield better than me, but for me it's a case of whatever was there. The entrance to the town centre car park and toilets used to have a number of world war one poem's on the walls, which took me back to learning them for English language o-level .Chesterfield has allegedly the largest market in England. Whether that's by stalls or size I am not sure , Newark comes close for size and neither come close to Arras.
My first recollection of Chesterfield was coming out of their town hall one evening having tractor see the late great Hal Ketchum (Past the point of rescue and Small town Saturday night) to find two kids boxing in the car park, each with just one glove on.

Last year's memory was s 4-0 defeat where we hoofed the ball out of defence to nobody.

Top pub - Derby Tup - quite near to football ground.

Colchester Cavaliers Cricket Club used to annually tour Chesterfield, Darley Dale and Chatsworth House. I usually kept wicket, but have the shame of twice bowling a single ball on the lawn of Chatsworth House and twice seeing it soar for a match winning six into the river against the Duke’s XI. My aggregate tour figures hence being 0.2, 0, 0, 12. The consolation was Hospitality in the (private) Chatsworth House Staff Club was second to none.

Least memorable experience, the 2025 Chesterfield FC lights show comprising of the plain (white) floodlights flickering on and off. No pattern, no unison, no entertainment. The U’s performance offered nothing better.

A supermarket on stilts - the Tesco store next to the stadium is 3 metres off the ground with an exposed car park underneath.

Sadly no more, but Saltergate was used for the Baseball Ground scenes in The Damned United.

Up the U's
Poll: Auf wiedersehen, pet - who’ll be joining the great northern exodus?
