Saw someone on Twitter describe him as "an early contender for player of the season in the National League" and while it's a bit soon to be saying things like that, it's nice that he's doing well there. |

Ward obviously then Adamson, JCS, Morrison, Alemayehu, Varane, Saito, Smyth, Lloyd.
Interesting that Alemayehu (who got some minutes at the end of last season) hasn't made it onto the pitch yet, but Scarlett has come on twice and is now starting. |

I think with Lloyd you really have to remember that his background is at a way lower level than everyone else's. He's not been training since he was 7 in a high-level academy set-up. All his development is happening late, but he works hard and has visibly improved this season compared to the past. No different than Smythy really, who was playing at no real level before he joined us and has gotten better as he's spent more time with better coaching than he ever had as a kid. |

The Morgan loan feels like they wanted a cheap, reasonably experienced back-up. He'll inevitably get minutes, but he's not gone there to be first choice. You'd assume club and player were aware of that at the time.
Re: EDB, I don't think it's really comparable to Kolli. EDB had talent but like a lot of players who come out of academies at his age he didn't really have the fire that it takes to make it as a professional athlete. Not actively disinterested like Tyler Roberts but just didn't seem to understand that talent only takes you so far, you have to deliver in games. Pretty telling in the end that we could only get him loans to absolute nothing sides at levels where he should have looked like prime Messi and even they couldn't be bothered with him. Kolli may not have the right mentality around training and fitness, and his dad may be an idiot a la Willock Sr who messes his son's career up by trying to sell him as a 10/10 when he's only performing at a 6/10, but he's already done more in football than EDB ever has or ever will. |

Arsenal's squad cost a billion quid. We think we've pushed the boat out and had a good go because we might have spent £20m or so over the last 3 seasons. It's not a remotely reasonable comparison. |

Last season we came here and dug in with no plan to so much as go past the halfway line. This season we were all over them and they basically accepted a point at home and played to get it. Shame we couldn't finish them off but it's progress of a sort. |

Yeah, my guess would be that it was something like he could have a knee op that was guaranteed to take him out for three months, or he could try rest and physio and be back playing for the start of the season, and he chose option B and now we're paying for it. No idea if that's true, just a possibility.
With Varane I think the club just didn't get offers they thought were worth it and figured they'd potentially get better ones in Jan or next summer. Unfortunately for him the manager rates other players better in his position and there isn't the same pressure from the club to play him as a development/sale prospect because you can make the same argument about Madsen/Vale/Edwards, and Kamara they've brought in on loan and clearly are very keen to see playing too. |

Poku had multiple recurring injuries last season and Madsen picked up a bad one after being overused which kept him out for most of the spring and which is still conditioning back to full fitness. Them playing restricted minutes isn't "concerning," it's the club correctly looking at some of its best assets and deciding that they prefer 46 appearances of 60-70 minutes than 20 appearances of 90 minutes.
Kone played half of last season with an obvious knee injury and likely should have had more done about it over the summer. Whether he chose not to or the club did is something we don't know.
Varane isn't injured or even noticeably unfit, he just isn't being picked presumably because Stephan doesn't rate him.
I really don't get why so many people seem to think that players coming back off serious injuries should immediately be jumping back into playing 90 minutes multiple times per week. I promise you that pushing them to do too much too soon is only going to get us fewer minutes and less value out of them overall than managing their bodies to let them heal properly.
As a side note on JCS, nobody seems to remember him having hip surgery last season which Nourry said was meant to address the recurring issue he had which kept taking him out of action. He's played in every game so far and done 3 lots of 90 minutes, a brief sub apperance against Cardiff, and the first 67 against Boro. Maybe he goes down in a heap again tonight and misses the rest of the season, but it's promising that he is back to regularly playing again. |

And that's partly why they cost more on their own than our entire squad does collectively. Nobody is saying it's impossible for any player to play a lot of minutes, but highly skilled players who can also do 90 minutes every game of the season are more expensive for a reason. |

It's really tiresome. Even after the wins there's been loads of complaining about how we won 2-1 but should have won 4-1, how the opposition weren't any good anyway so it's not like it really counts, stuff like that. The Cardiff match thread was incandescent at half time. People who'd be blowing out their arse after two minutes of Championship football insisting that elite athletes coming back from serious injuries shouldn't need their fitness managing because in 1982 blokes who played games at a slower pace with bigger breaks between matches didn't have to. A timely reminder in the match report after the Boro game that Mick Beale insisted on playing his best players to "get this thing going" and ruined Chris Willock's career as a consequence, which is apparently what some people on here think we should be doing as a matter of course because otherwise Julien has personally betrayed every fan.
For my money we have the best and most exciting squad we've had in years, they all look well up for it, we've stuck 10pts on the board already which is promotion form. Every team in football is going to lose games they could have drawn or draw games they could have won - Hull are currently in the PL after losing 15 games last season! Every loss cannot be an indictment of the club, the team, the manager, especially tight games against very good teams like Boro with a squad worth about twice what ours is. |

Either way I think a big difference between Lloyd and Kolli is that Lloyd is almost always available when he is here, and works hard when he gets the chance. Kolli's availability is patchy at best and when he does play he can be a bit of a passenger. Great finisher when he gets the chance but he doesn't offer anything like the pace or physicality Alfie does. |

I thought Madsen did really well in the opening 20-30 minutes and faded a bit after, which isn't surprising given he had a bit of a disrupted preseason. I think also we'll just see him do less because he has better players around him - last season anything going through midfield had to go through him if it wanted to go forwards, but when we've had Edwards/Chair/Kamara in there they all offer that as well so we're not as dependent on Nico. |

It was said above already but Lamptey, Kamara, and Madsen were all planned to go off as they're managing minutes to keep them fit. Mbengue took a knock just then too which is why he went off as well. |

I agree that Adamson acquitted himself well again last night, particularly that chance he created out of nothing, very Burrell-like in using pace and physicality to win a ball that he had no right to.
I think with both him and Lloyd they look much better coached and also just a lot more confident - in fact I'd say the whole team looks like it has a level of confidence we've not seen for a long old time. There was a point against Cardiff where it felt like we'd attack, lose possession, then immediately intercept the outball and go on the attack again, and everyone had stayed high and was looking to pass forwards immediately. Last season half those attacks wouldn't have happened because we'd have dropped off to defend and then started playing sideways and backwards. |
