Field to Norwich
at 18:05 2 Feb 2026

Underrated and under appreciated player and always showed up for the club. I'll be sorry to see him go and wish him all the best.

But (and I don't like this, it's just the way things are) I'm convinced by Hunterhoop's proposition that to make the finances work we need to sell £500k of player per year (IIRC) and I'd say that with Hayden in the squad, Edwards maybe able to play a more attacking role than pure defence, then I think one of Varane and Field are the guys we can most easily spare if we get decent money for either. (Selling both would leave us thin in that position I think)

I can't remember the exact details, but Peter Ustinov's parents were both of Russian ancestry (as you'd expect) but his father's side had taken a detour via Germany (thrown out by the Tsar for the crime of marrying a Protestant; young Peter was "von Ustinow" when he started school but dropped the von and changed the "w" back to "v" for obvious reasons).

Anyway his German-Russian grandfather married the daughter of a Swiss missionary who did some of his missionary work in Africa, so Peter Ustinov's four grandparents were:
- two Russian; some Swiss ancestry way back in the 1700s (an ancestor went to Russia as pastry chef to the Tsar)
- one German citizen, Russian ancestry.
- one half-Swiss/half Ethiopian granny.

(His dad was also an agent for MI6 while a German diplomat in London in the 30s, but that's another story.)

Everyone else has said it better than me, but just as a side issue: not looking so much of the stony-faced Scandinavian these days, is he?

Watch him celebrate his winner, and his charge to grab the ball straight after Kone scored from his cross.

Briefly read that as "catering" and was expecting a complaint about the pies.

On the whole I'd prefer it if the guys who handle our nuclear deterrent stayed off the sauce until at least they got back on land.

Whether people want to use the Ignore button is up to them, but I have no compunction in using it.

Back in The Old Days, you chatted to your mates in the pub/at work/the Women's Institute/wherever.

No-one you didn't know came up to you and randomly started spouting balls at you uninvited. If they had done, you'd have told them to sling their hook.

No-one would put up with the other person getting huffy, talking down to you, swearing at you or otherwise slagging you off, but anyway it wouldn't arise because no-one would be bloody stupid enough to try - plenty of places it'd get you a smack if you'd tried it. And no-one thought anyone's freedom of speech was getting infringed or that you had a duty to listen to someone who got on your tits.

If you hung out with people who talked balls, that was your choice and your lookout.

The great glory of the internet is that I can sit here over 100 miles from Loftus Road and get into a chat about the Rs. The downside is that I've no control over who joins in.

Except, I have. That's the Ignore button.

I wouldn't compare him to Jim Gregory, but honestly I struggle to think of any other owner we've had since Gregory to match Ruben.

(I'm not about to start a cult of Ruben as God/Saint either, but one of the good things about him is that he doesn't seem to want that either.)

This.

If I had any money to throw around at QPR, I'd be spending it on
- new fitness coach/support staff, maybe facilities
- the pitch/ground staff.

(Not joking by the way, I reckon you would get a much better return on the investment than you would on player wages in a squad where, as the OP noted, if everyone is fit we look a bit bloated.)

Sniping at Kone is starting to get on my tits now.

We're halfway through the season and he's got 5 goals, which might not be stellar but would make him 2nd or joint-second top scorer in the last two seasons even if he was transferred tomorrow.

Also two assists which understates his contribution by generally putting it about (much needed at QPR, which is usually full of Nice Lads You Wouldn't Mind Your Daughter Bringing Home) and being a bloody nuisance to defenders.

Maybe he looks A Bit League One at times, well guess what, we signed him from League 1 and he's not yet had a full season at this level. He's going through the stages of brash confidence/nasty surprise for defenders, followed by opposition studying the video and countering his trademark moves, and now he''s in the Adapt To New Level phase. 2 goals in his last 6 games tells me he's getting there and I don't care of they come off his shoulder, arse or his spleen, they all count. Getting the ball into the net by any means is what it's all about for big awkward sods like him.

Streets ahead of Celar, Dykes, Frey (thanks for your service, but we all get old) Mac Bonne, Tyler Roberts, Sinclair Armstrong, Kelman, or Alfie Lloyd (for now anyway) who are literally all of our strikers for the three years before Kone who aren't called Ilias - and I've never slagged any of those off here, most of them were doing their best.

Don't want to quote it, to avoid using space, but great post from baz_qpr upthread.

Big point about fitness. Been unacceptable for a couple of years now. New fitness coach (or director or whatever poncy title they come up with) is biggest signing we could make, and best value for money.

Stolen from numptydumpty upthread:

We are better than we once were. There's no doubting that...

That's what it's all about, this season.

In Julien I trust.

Who Knew Walsh Was So Good?
at 23:43 11 Jan 2026

Don't really get some of this thread.

He's raw and has had a poor season when thrown in (bizarrely IMO) when Nardi was apparently deemed Not Good Enough on basis of some mixed performances (but still noticeably better than his predecessor Begovich IMO.)

He's had a decent game. Doesn't prove he's good enough or necessarily better than Nardi (who remains mixed.) But it's still good and excellent for his confidence, which is probably a big part of his problem as a young keeper.

Encouraging stuff. Can't we just bank that, please?

Echo the other comments on here.

Support in the ground sounded terrific on the radio, well done to all involved.

Puts a bit of context on our track record in the cups, though. We're a fairly easily pleased bunch - put out a proper team and give it a bit of a go and we'll be happy. I'd like to think a message has got through, Julien seems to get it anyway.

Good to hear Bradley Allen on the radio commentary too.

Hazard was the first name that sprang to my mind too.

Probably because I felt there were a couple of times when we could have matched his transfer fee; like Devonshire he felt like "one who'd got away".

I was also in the Le Tissier fan club and again when we bought Colin Clarke I wished we'd bought Le Tiss instead (though subsequent history suggests he wouldn't have wanted to move)
