Sniping at Kone is starting to get on my tits now. We're halfway through the season and he's got 5 goals, which might not be stellar but would make him 2nd or joint-second top scorer in the last two seasons even if he was transferred tomorrow. Also two assists which understates his contribution by generally putting it about (much needed at QPR, which is usually full of Nice Lads You Wouldn't Mind Your Daughter Bringing Home) and being a bloody nuisance to defenders. Maybe he looks A Bit League One at times, well guess what, we signed him from League 1 and he's not yet had a full season at this level. He's going through the stages of brash confidence/nasty surprise for defenders, followed by opposition studying the video and countering his trademark moves, and now he''s in the Adapt To New Level phase. 2 goals in his last 6 games tells me he's getting there and I don't care of they come off his shoulder, arse or his spleen, they all count. Getting the ball into the net by any means is what it's all about for big awkward sods like him. Streets ahead of Celar, Dykes, Frey (thanks for your service, but we all get old) Mac Bonne, Tyler Roberts, Sinclair Armstrong, Kelman, or Alfie Lloyd (for now anyway) who are literally all of our strikers for the three years before Kone who aren't called Ilias - and I've never slagged any of those off here, most of them were doing their best. |

Don't want to quote it, to avoid using space, but great post from baz_qpr upthread. Big point about fitness. Been unacceptable for a couple of years now. New fitness coach (or director or whatever poncy title they come up with) is biggest signing we could make, and best value for money. |

Stolen from numptydumpty upthread: We are better than we once were. There's no doubting that... That's what it's all about, this season. In Julien I trust. |

Don't really get some of this thread. He's raw and has had a poor season when thrown in (bizarrely IMO) when Nardi was apparently deemed Not Good Enough on basis of some mixed performances (but still noticeably better than his predecessor Begovich IMO.) He's had a decent game. Doesn't prove he's good enough or necessarily better than Nardi (who remains mixed.) But it's still good and excellent for his confidence, which is probably a big part of his problem as a young keeper. Encouraging stuff. Can't we just bank that, please? |

Echo the other comments on here. Support in the ground sounded terrific on the radio, well done to all involved. Puts a bit of context on our track record in the cups, though. We're a fairly easily pleased bunch - put out a proper team and give it a bit of a go and we'll be happy. I'd like to think a message has got through, Julien seems to get it anyway. Good to hear Bradley Allen on the radio commentary too. |

Hazard was the first name that sprang to my mind too. Probably because I felt there were a couple of times when we could have matched his transfer fee; like Devonshire he felt like "one who'd got away". I was also in the Le Tissier fan club and again when we bought Colin Clarke I wished we'd bought Le Tiss instead (though subsequent history suggests he wouldn't have wanted to move) |

Just tried to remind myself of where we were 17 years ago, and Jesus but you've got a tough season-and-a-half ahead of you there, Gus. |

Playing away from home on a Monday in between Boxing Day and New Year has me expecting a classic QPR shambles. So on that basis I'm mildly optimistic about the lineup. The selectorial equivalent of treating someone with a hangover by chucking a bucket of cold water over them. |

Of course memory is hazy, but now I think of it, by "QPR" Dave may well have meant us as fans rather than anyone actually running the club. |

I'm sure I remember Dave Thomas in AKUTRs writing at the time that Parker and Coney were the only things QPR had actually wanted from the merger. I just assumed that the two things were related. |

Thing about this, and the comment from Mr Sheen you're replying to, and the rather pointed remarks quoted by WilkinsWaterCarrier upthread about "someone before", is that it's it's one of those "two things can be true" things. He was poor last season, but with occasional flashes off real ability both in his first couple of games and then towards end of season. It's only fair to say it would take time to reach the fitness and sharpness to match the pace of this league. Also only fair to acknowledge the guy has really knuckled down to it, doing so while taking a load of abuse. Lot of character, right there. But even though I will always want to give players a chance (and I definitely included Madsen and Celar in that last year) I can also understand why some people, and maybe a certain former manager, had their doubts as to whether he was ever going to. Celar looks to be binned off, and with 7 appearances and no goals this season for Dusseldorf, rightly so. Which shows these things can go either way and you'd need to know the guys pretty well before you can call it (which gets back to why I'm reluctant to write players off.) |

Just the other day Cerys Matthews played a big chunk of it on her Sunday morning show to illustrate an interview about science and I have to say I was thinking there's some bloody good guitar playing on this. |

I tend to agree, but it's largely because apart from Burrell in all those positions there isn't really an alternative in the same class as the first choice. Chair can play as a No 10 or winger. As such Saito, Dembele, Poku, Burrell, maybe Smyth, even Madsen could be used instead of him, depending on the formation. I still have Chair as at least as good as any of those and more versatile. (He's had to be, for years he's been first on the team sheet and then had to fit in with whoever the hell else we've been trying to make into some sort of attack.) So a hell of a lot of other players have got to be on fit and in decent form before a match-fit Chair doesn't get into my starting XI The good thing is that we don't have to drive him into the ground all season now. |
 | Forum Reply | Kone goal at 13:10 21 Dec 2025
I'll be surprised if the goals don't flow again. (Mostly) he's carried on doing the right sort of things even when he's not beens scoring, and Burell has certainly benefitted a few times. Strikers can go through hot streaks and dry spells, it's a little early to call whether his run of 4 in 7 (6 starts) or the run of none in nine is the "real" Kone. |
