Disappointing result, primarily because, aside from Charles' dropped ball, we never looked in any trouble against a very physical team that finished 3rd in 2025/26.
By the same token, they did not look like they were worried by our front line either. The team is going through a time of transition, as Stephane looks for options other than 442. Sometimes, it is going to work; others times it will look a bit flat, and that is what we saw today. Excellent control and slick passing from front to back... and now what? We looked a bit hesitant on the edge of the opposition box.
Not panicking at this point. We haven't lost ground against any rivals and, if this were a League fixture, we ended up with a score draw. Might I remind everyone of the utter dumpster fire that was our last game against Millwall? This was annoying but infinitely better than that!
Side note: it's about time that Owen Goal got a squad number. He's made a great start to the season. |

A game that dragged like a seal's ringpiece and wasn't enlivened by a goalkeeping error that made Nardi look the kind of stupid rarely seen outside of high-level idiot conventions or US politics. Bright spots were hard to come by but Rhys Norrington-Davies played was solid throughout, bringing the ball forward well and linking with Saito to good effect. Madsen's performance continued on its recent, steady upward trajectory and he deserved his goal, when it came. Other than that, the only things that stood out to me were a ref that was determined to give me an aneurysm and a sublime one two from Burrell for Kone. Regrettable, forgettable and one more time Barry sodding Bannan has made us look like the St Winifred's under 11 girls team (second XI): just retire already! |

Not loving Walsh in goal but this was a far better performance, played mostly on the front foot. Better use of width and Kone's forward play was outstanding. I liked Norrington-Davies' combination with Smyth on the left and thought he gave some solidity to the back which allowed Mbengue to step into midfield. Vale in the 'ten' role looked comfortable and his vision and passing put pressure on the Charlton's defence.
Saito's goal was a thing of beauty.

Great start to the season. The side looked like it was well-drilled, fit and had a clear plan. Compare that to some of the dreck we've seen from luminaries such as Hughes or Redknapp over the years and it gives a real sense of a corner turned.
Particular mentions go to Shodipo, who looked an absolute natural on his league debut, Mass, who played like a man possessed and Polter, who led the line brilliantly throughout.
And that defence...? They look like they'd tackle a concrete effigy of King Kong if it was on-side.
