Yes, this is the Sheffield Wednesday match thread

On a more serious note, experienced supporters and followers of teams will know Barry Bannan has been one of the best players in the League (s) for what? lets say 8 years.

No surprise he's scored and I'm sure we'll have done homework on him - if really needed - as to his prowess at eluding midfield markers going forward. He's been a very good player at this level, simple as that. I think he practically kept them up at the end of last season with some of his performances/goals.

No shame in him scoring against us, however what was basically 90 mins of total tosh probably deserved he scored anyway.

Onward and downward.....

yes, new just come through, so, so sad.

It's perhaps hard to appreciate nowadays, there was something Gladiatorial about him.

Given Stans size it was even more mesmerising...he was truly the best

rest in peace dear Stan, rest in peace.

Beale sacked
at 17:09 19 Feb 2024

I'm getting the strong impression Beale is/was a professional non performer.

By that I mean his tenure at Rangers ( that's Jockland Rangers ) was a opportunity to secure monies beyond an average managers capability.

Add the Sunderland job, where, to be frank he showed no appetite for the "real job ". Either in living near to the city or communicating with the fans during/post match and then body language with the players post game, hence he can walk away with a very good settlement given his 2 year contact being terminated. You could almost say that was his strategy from the outset.

Of course the above assumes he's signed up to a water tight contract where employment termination would result in a appropriate settlement. I say this based on his Agent / Solicitor signing up and agreeing such a deal.

When you consider the mans actual achievements which are pretty scant to be fair, you have either a group of employers who've been sucked into his snake oil pitch, or a game plan of maximising his apparent skills and achievements way beyond their actual worth.

Either way, its an impressive game plan, which to be honest has probably made him a wealthy man in a short space of time.

Is he related to Harry Redknapp?

well according to the majority of the Bristol City supporters he was one of out best players.

Won the majority of headers coming his way and engaged their back line continually giving them no room

have a read of their Forum, I don't think they'd misread his performance.

as ever, I commend my learned friends to read The Oatcake...

the locals aren't happy, as I've posted on here a few times.

to be frank, couldn't happen to a nicer club. A bit like us over recent years, all wind and piss from senior management and reality kicking in, they've been on a dour run over last 2-3 years and are getting progressively worse......

whats not to like

Goes without saying how much he's loved at Wolves. Have Wolves ST mate to confirm as much.

Doing a great job with limited, difficult resource horizons.

Presents himself and his club exceptionally well in the media, not least a great level of humility when things go wrong, usually VAR related, they've had some reet shitters.

A marked difference from several other managers I can think of.

Stoke.
at 09:37 4 Feb 2024

Ha !!

Stoke is a very interesting one.

They have an odd mix of history ( I can remember their great teams in the 60/70's and they were good ) alongside a good stadium ( when the suns out and it's not blowing a gale ) and one of the richest owners going.

All of which makes for a very demanding fan base. They've got very short fuses in terms of their manager expectations and being a regular follower of "The Oat Cake" website can confirm they're obviously not happy with their current lot.

To be fair they have been blessed with some right arsehole managers over the last couple or so years. Nathan Jones being a particular highlight.

So, reading recent posts it's clear they're in decline, possibly terminally in terms of Championship retention. I don't think they've signed or pulled anyone in over the transfer window so are very much stuck with what they've got. No bounce expected. Their squad seems to have a very bland look about it and clearly the locals aren't happy.

Overall they're getting worse not better and quiet how they get out of this current trajectory is hard to see. I don't think the management /owners have the nerve to change the manager ( again ) as they've gone through FIVE in the last two years...
Long may it continue

Should get every professional to watch this game

that's what cup footballs all about

got me thinking their manager George is a proper football manager and his thoughts and emotions were really moving.

how different to the comments when Holloway put his cup teams out....very much a "can't be arsed " attitude. Hope he was watching it.

For those that enjoy a bit of sadism ( don't we all ?) a visit to a few of the Sunderland forums is well worth a visit.

In brief the majority that post there hate him already.

Some of it's personal - apparently he has a mole, speaks in a language none of them can understand and has a paunch, exacerbated by a tendency to wear a track suit.

And thats the good stuff......

elsewhere they've already spotted a nasty trait of dumping responsibility on others, nothing sticks and a lack of game management, subs/game plan etc

that coupled with team selection and a distinct inability to get a tune out of any of the players he decides to pick means he doesn't look good.

His first game left supporters totally dumbfounded as he apparently chose to just stand on the touchline and look at it all collapse around him rather than change anything.

Onward and downward....hee hee

I'm usually reluctant to pitch in on other peoples clubs but the recent Everton issues obviously catch the eye.

https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/teams/everton

Many moons ago the company I worked for was having "trouble" with moaners at our depot in St Helens. It was explained to me that, despite them having the same deal as everyone else around the UK, they were always complaining. From being an independent asset we acquired they were shut down inside 10 year due to this attitude.

Those comments have stayed with me ever since and every now and again comments and campaigns pop up to confirm those comments, not least this one in the BBC Sport section today.

The "its always them, not us" stance.
Quiet how/why they see themselves as not having to comply with FFP rules is beyond me. Even the complaining about "small club" designation well, they are aren't they. ? A big club is perhaps one that's won something in the last 20 odd years....they last won the Cup in 1995, I'd kinda be thinking consistency has a part to play in that comment too.

Are they "bigger" than Leicester who won the League 2016, or are maybe Leicester bigger than Everton? Who knows, who cares ? Certainly not the Premier League.

Regardless "they" still pitch to be considered and appraised in a way that seems to be separate from the rest of us.

I guess the question is....why?

Question about the QPR Bond

Jeez,

you reminded me

I sold my shares in the club way back.

My Financial Advisor thought it unwise as I was in theory looking to have a share in 6 acres of prime West London real estate....

But the Duke of Westminster suggested otherwise - hence I invested my £3.75 elsewhere in Wilco shares

Match Thread: Watford can't play to save their lives, amigo.
at 11:20 14 Jan 2024

This fixture always makes me reminisce, boy over the years I've seen a few of these.

I'd like to think given the loss of Terry Venables, we'd once more get our revenge.

I've been personally stained by those "its the slope" when he managed us to a loss there.

The Glen Roeder / Stan Bowles comment to Coleman in the "Midweek Match" when Coleman said, "that was a lovely piece of skill there Glen, beating two with that drag-back"

and Stan retorting with, "yes, there's only two in thew world who can do that, and I taught Glen"

There's something about this which makes me feel we'll hold on to something, be it a point or three, but as ever, living in hope.
