Whatever happened to "merit"
at 10:56 28 Oct 2020

I'm still disappointed that women can now become teachers. When did that happen?

It's not so much a case of 'positive discrimination' any more, it's more a case of treating everyone equally. As has been mentioned, there is often something in people's subconscious that precludes them from assuming someone is suitable for certain roles.

Excellent result. To fall behind twice and hit back soon after both times shows we're really making strides. It also sounds like we took them on and easily deserved the result.

Edit: No idea why I replied to you, Boromat!

RIP Eddie Van Halen - Legend

Two top-10 singles, seven top-10 albums.

He's not my cup of tea either, but music icons aren't necessarily the ones with the biggest sales.

It was probably the Sunday afternoon pints, but I started to wonder whether it would be best to lock-in the PL as it is, keep it separate from the EFL and keep fans away. This season has been bonkers and enjoyable, for a league I've had little interest in for years.

Lund and Done named in the Team of the Week. It really does seem like we're finding a new identity, especially with Beesley and Humphrys up front.

Delighted for Tavares. There seems to be a player in there, hopefully this can give him a bit more confidence.

Barton was bemoaning the lack of signings... again.

Starting XI v Hudds
at 20:57 5 Sep 2020

I didn't expect us to win today, but I probably got sucked in to the 'our team is not good enough' narrative.

Looking at the first XI, it IS good enough. Our first team is solid, save for a proper striker. As much love as I have for bringing youth through, that bench needs looking at. Some people may have confused lack of depth for a rubbish team. Undoubtedly we need more options off the bench, but that first team is definitely good enough to avoid relegation.

I *think* Amazon are showing their matches free-to-air too, but I'm not completely sure.

I was only following on BBC text but it seemed to confirm what you're saying. I, too, am pleased with this approach - despite the result. I just wish we had adopted it for some much more winnable games.

It sounds like we fluffed a few chances. Tongue in cheek a bit, but what chance our strikers are a bit ring-rusty?

Manager Interviews: John Coleman
at 14:03 25 Feb 2020

Balls. Fat fingers voted it down by mistake.

Another fine interview. He comes out fighting, as we'd expect, and provides an interesting insight into his time at the club. The messageboard bit was hugely interesting.

It didn't work for him at the Dale and I didn't enjoy the majority of the football we played under him, but he's a very good manager at the right club and I wish him the best of luck at Accy or wherever... except against Dale, obvs.

Good news about one of our historic pubs
at 20:35 24 Feb 2020

Sam Smiths pubs vary immensely. Near me, the one on the river in York is gash, the Rugby Tav in Hull is alright, and Nellies in Beverley is good. The Old Welly in Manchester isn't bad.

There was something published the other week about the owner. Among one of his weirdest decisions was shutting down a pub on New Year's Eve because he walked in and someone was either on the phone or swearing. It's not a good way to run a business.

I wish we'd make a team work for a victory for once. If the better teams win, so be it, but I want to come away feeling impressed by how good the opposition were - not how bad we were.

I love patient football and was so proud of the goals we scored at Southend. However, it's just not working anywhere near often enough to make it a worthwhile first-choice tactic regardless of the opposition.

Arguably, we probably have our best defence ever (certainly on paper): Good GK from a PL club; McShane and O'Connell; a £1m right-back now at a PL club great at getting forward; and a U21 international left-back at a PL club who is also great at getting forward. Our midfield is rife with decent options: Rathbone, Lund, Morley, Camps, Ryan. We also have a club legend up front with an excellent target man.

So why are we struggling so much? It's clear that the tactics aren't working and that teams have figured us out (as Sunderland proved).

It really needs to change.

Pitch update
at 12:38 15 Feb 2020

Weather and geographical location will be two of the main factors for the postponement. Not everywhere else, even locally, is as high or relatively open to the elements as Spotland. Of course, our underlying pitch problems will have contributed too.

Also, don't forget that Man City had a postponement last weekend too. While it's not impossible, I'd be surprised if we are the only one called off this weekend.

While I don't necessarily disagree with you on the pitch, I think the weather over the past week has played a huge part in today's postponement: two named storms in two weekends is a rare event.

City banned from playing in Europe.
at 23:59 14 Feb 2020

As far as I'm aware* there are different financial rules for European competitions. While I'm not doubting that Man City have been naughty in this respect, there must be generations of Real Madrid fans p*ssing themselves at this decision.

*My information comes solely from Football Manager.

Americans et al have, for years, used the singular for teams, whereas we have, rightly or wrongly, used the plural. Hence, 'Arsenal has beaten Chelsea', as opposed to our usual 'Arsenal have beaten Chelsea'. To me, it still seems wrong to use the former, even though I'm aware it's probably the betterer English.
