100% this. Made an impression on me that game too. The flick on by big Matt Smith on the halfway line, Smythy sprinting away from the Cardiff defender to smash it in. (Wasn't that his debut?)
I really liked his appearances after that, but some fans didn't rate him. He then spent a period of time out on loan before being sold to Orient. I was gutted when he left, but delighted when he retuirned, despite a few fans being a bit "meh" about him returning from a spell in League 2, where they thought that was his level.
He's been great since he came back, and seems to be getting better and better!

Not sure I get some of the comments regarding Smyth. He's been one of our most consistent players so far this season. There's so much more to his game than getting decent crosses in (which has improved significantly in my opinion) He's been involved in 4 of our last 7 goals. Works his absolute nuts off for the team, whilst getting battered in the process!

Exactly that.
We had more possession all game until around the 90th minute where it swung into Derby's favour in injury time.
And you could also look at the shots on goal - less than a lot of our games this season with just 9 (Derby had 15!) But this time the chances were converted.
Basically the damage was done in the 1st half (55%) so the urgency in the 2nd half dropped off (41%). That plus playing with 10 men for the last 15mins where we were just sitting back and letting them have possession while we tried to keep a clean sheet.
The most important stat though was the final score and a nice 3pts on the board. :-) |

Ok, 1 game out of 3 (33%) where we were below par, away to a Nathan Jones team in a London Derby.
In previous years it would a far higher percentage of more possession games playing poorly.
Do you not think that despite not quite getting over the line in these "more possession" games that we're playing significantly better then we usually do? And at least like we're doing absolutely everything but finding the net? I'd be more worried if the performances were still like Oxford, and they're clearly not.
I think the difference in performance of the Oxford type games last year and similar "should win" games this season is like nght & day. [Post edited 14 Oct 17:16]

I totally get the Oxford comparisons from last season. We had more possession, but we were crap with it, and hardly created anything and never looked like scoring. So yes, we couldn't break down teams to actually look like socring/winning.
I don't believe you can say the same for the games v Bolton and Preston. And the goal attempt stats back that up.
Barring some excellent keeping, near misses and poor finishing, those games would've been won comfortably. With the Oxford games, we never really looked like scoring and were bereft of ideas, and the games were terrible. I see a huge difference/improvement this season with more possession, even if the results don't quite back it up, but the attacking stats most certainly do. |

Why is it a terrible 18 month record?
You don't get extra points for winning with more possession.
I'm really baffled with fans obsession with possession (poet, didn't know it).
I actually like the fact we've got a great winning record with less possession. I wonder if we've got the longest winning record with less possession? |

We have been breaking teams down tho to be fair. It's not like teams are parking the bus and we've been unable to create chances as a result of that or that we just run out of ideas. Barring some brilliant goalkeeping and several near misses, we'd have won those 2 matches v Bolton & Preston.
So breaking teams down has not really been the "problem" in my opinion. |

Think you've misread the dimensions there Kensal. You've quoted QPR's dimensions in Yards, against West Ham's which is in Metres.
QPR Dimensions: 112 yards long x 72 yards wide (102m x 66m)
WHU Dimensions: 114.8 yards long x 74.4 yards wide (105m x 68m)
So West Hams' is a couple of metres or so bigger in length and girth. [Post edited 13 Oct 15:51]

Possession shmossession!
From the latest round of Prem matches for examples...
Newcastle had 67% possession last night. Lost 4-1.
Bournemouth had 50% possession v Chelsea. Lost 5-1
Fulham had 52% possesion v Ipswich. Lost 2-1
Sunderland had 62% possession v Brighton. Lost 2-0
Possession's overated and can do one as far as I'm concerned. Chances created is the key stat for me. Plus the goals obviously, which will come. I'd be more concerned if we weren't creating chances, but we are, so...

Shilton? Not for me.
But I am of an age where I only ever remember/saw the 80's onwards Shilton. Mainly the 86, 88 and 90's Shilton, who I feel was a the weak link in those tournaments, particularly in 86 and 90. Beaten in the air by a midget, who's arm wasn't even extended to score the Hand of God goal. And in '90 wasn't great v West Germany. I'll give him the benefit of the doubt for the deflected goal off of Parker, but he was terrible in the shoot out.
From what I've seen of 70's Shilton, he was a great keeper. But went on 5 years too long for England imo.
Contraversial opinion, but I think Pickford's a better 'keeper - certainly better than the 80's onwards Shilton. |
