Student Loans
at 00:25 1 Feb 2026

I was listening to an interview earlier with a doctor. He has been paying off his 50,000 plus loan for ten years and he now owes 72000. There should be no interest on these loans. The figures are horrendous and the policy made my politicians who didn't have student loans so it had no effect on them. My daughter's three years are already over £60000and that interest will continue to accrue faster than she can pay off unless she get's that top law job but all the graduates are chasing those roles.

its a good idea as long as it is followed up with the redevelopment of St Helens which needs the council and university on board as this city should go ahead with their plans in spite of what that pathetic capital try on. Swansea is some kind of hindrance. Cricket then rugby as Rich says. They would go for football as well. It is bizarre that Radio Wales is giving positive comments about Wrexham's spawny arrival in the play off's. That never happens when Swansea do well.

Two local MP's are on the case to support the Ospreys. There is deafening silence from Gower MP Tonia Antoniazzi who, coincidentally, is on the Scarlets board. Tonia darling, you represent Gower constituents not frigging Llanelli.

Britain was falsely enjoying the selling of the family silver which did bring immediate cash windfalls to the government and to the country but that was accompanied by long term negative consequences.
Nothing is simple is economics and running the country but Thatcher was not a saint and neither was Blair.

One of Reform's election promises in England was that they would freeze council tax. In the 5 they control, they put up council tax by the maximum permitted of 5% in 4 of them and in the other they increased the tax by 3.99%. Reality bites.

Reflecting ;Should we?

Happy Birthday Rich.

We all reflect on the past, sometimes for guidance and reassurance and for lessons lived.

I have had an interesting year and part of that was a reflection on my past and joined a genealogy site which reintroduced part of family that I knew about but had no idea where they were as they did a kind of Lewis diaspora.

It does worry me that someone that shares my surname may be closer to me than makes me comfortable ;)

Murder in the Valleys - Clydach murders
at 23:24 12 Jan 2026

That's right about barristers. They get paid a lot of money for a reason.
There are a few of us who may be from Clydach and will be quite sensitive to this subject because of family and friends.

Swansea City v West Bromwich Albion : FA Cup match day thread
at 17:48 11 Jan 2026

First thing I said was that we have just thrown away a few hundred grand because we insist on giving our real goal keeper a day off on cup days. It gives us something else to look forward to and, even though we struggle to score ourselves that has been wasted. I don't know if Vigs would have saved any of the penalties but he wouldn't have let hose goals in.

I used to go to Sweetmans for a pastie then Covelli's for the chips. I lived so close to Johnnies that they kept me alive for a good while.
Hardly eat chips these days so it is good to know what is great out there and with my current job I am in the position to swing by them on the way home.
I regularly forget about the Copperfish so thanks for the reminder.
I went to Penaluna's in Hirwaun a few years ago and indeed it was good.

2026 Unemployment
at 16:06 10 Jan 2026

I have been banging my head against a brick wall for years trying to explain to my friend's who are lucky (by choice) to have a public pension as they (my friend's) can't seem to grasp why I get worried about the state of the markets and how it affects my pension. The money I have put in to pot was disappearing quicker than I was putting in to it for a good while.
The bank of mum and dad isn't going to be good enough in a few years time. Some of my daughter's friends are on a completely different financial plateau and the amount of money they are given by their parent's makes us look like paupers so I do think how really hard it must be for kids who don't have any help get a foothold on finance for the future.

I do have fond memories of summer afternoons eating on the lawn outside Dick Bartons with so many other families. The queue of traffic coming back from Caswell and Langland was immense.

2026 Unemployment
at 12:55 10 Jan 2026

Usual Labour party in spite of the last decade of hell by a completely useless bunch of similar politicians from another party.
The minimum wage is now too high but that isn't this government's fault or the previous one. As has been said it probably needs to be frozen for a few years just like in the past when public sector workers have had to have a pay freeze. I'm looking at life in the same way as Max and looking to stop working nearly 50 hours every week and would be joyous (thanks to the minimum wage that I'm saying should be frozen) if I could get a job working three days a week.

yep, though checked online and Hiks is 9.75 for large cod and is supposed to be really good. one of my mates said Codbox is good as well. I travel through Swansea on way home so any good chippy is worth a look at. You can have a massive Chinese meal for the same cash.
