Saints look a poorly assembled team of misfits. There clearly are some good players at the club but they appear to be carpenters told to lay bricks. To make matters worse our management has decided to play endless foreplay football, fudging around the edges with no hint of ever getting to the cigarette and coffee. Defensive tactics seems to consist of dropping their trousers, bending over and asking the opposition if they would be kind enough to switch the lights off before they leave. |

On the way home last night I expressed a wish to draw Liverpool at home in the next round as I genuinely believe it is the best possible draw. Great game in prospect as this will ignite real passion from players and supporters and really light a touch paper under this cup. The Liverpool squad is poor and there for the taking and comparing the two first elevens I think only Coutinho would stand a chance of making our team. The fact that Liverpool are shorter odds to lift the cup than us beggars belief and demonstrates the general hubris that surrounds Klopp's appointment as a panacea to Liverpool's immediate problems. I don't care how good the chef is, you cant put a bucket of crap in the oven and expect to get a souffle. |

I have to disagree with your piece Nick as you seem to be afflicted with a serious case of hubris in your recent posts. Ugly is ugly and no self delusion on finding attractive points to cling on to can change the fact that the game was more shrek than Cinderella. Our entire front end had no bite or guile whatsoever and pelle looked very poor. On this evidence, he looked slow, cumbersome, obvious and possessed very little close control. Also troubling was the strange position Long was introduced into, giving the appearance of another striker lacking the ability we need up front. This is a 22million pound strike force , need I say anything more?
We may have received vast sums inward in the ceramic chicken on the table, but with team Reed and Krueger in charge of acquisitions, I really feel that they will be unable to attract to this club the kind of heart and calibre required to push us forward. Collectively they have sold nearly all the goals from our side in the close season with the rest sat in the recovery suite and it will be just to much to ask for Jay to take the burden of goals in isolation. Our one goal this season has come from a right back with the majority of efforts coming from defensive midfielders in advanced positions which should tell you all you need to know.
The only positive is that Koeman is no fool and must realise the problems and is capable of patching them over but it will not be easy with the men in the boardroom. Desertion and discontentment resulting in what happened over the close season does not occur without some good reason.
I really fear for us in terms of an entertainment level too as the stands will not hold up serving what we saw yesterday week on week. We have a fantastic club with amazing supporters in a geographically favourable area that has brilliant potential to grow and do something really special in this league. For four years we have been on the front foot and I'm sure we have all felt the sense of pride and optimism as we have done so. It just feels of late that at best we are currently stalling and our tasty apple which has been ripening nicely on the tree has managed to pick up a couple of maggots at the core. |

Interesting article Nick and there are parables but I feel largely that we are dealing with a different beast this time. I watched with some horror with what is occurring at St Mary's although I have remained largely calm waiting for the waters to settle before being too judgmental. I cannot help feeling however that something is clearly not right behind the scenes as the constant negativity emanating from the press and social media cannot be fantasy when transfers and dealings confirm some truth to the speculation. Les and Ralph clearly sought to mislead everyone by reassuring us that no deals have been done nor would be until a new manager was appointed. This was later proved to be rather economic with the truth when Ron let slip in a recent interview that he was informed of key player departures at his first interview. All of this is happening in the new era of honesty and openness with the supporters as trumpeted by the new board. Potty left at the beginning of the year, the players knew it (as tweeted by the players themselves) yet the board failed to act decisively to prevent what we have now witnessed. Both Ralph and Les should have opened clear and loud communications with the players at the outset instead of retracting back in the creation of a corporate beast the constant job opportunities advertised at saints FC demonstrate. Its all structure without intimacy, something that becomes cold, disengaging and difficult to understand.
As a consequence its not surprising that players are so keen to leave or have the appearance of wanting to do so. My deep worry is that eventually Les and Ralph's mismanagement and lack of communication and inspiration will lead to the loss of Ron manager as his track record demonstrates he is a good man who rarely suffers fools gladly.
I hope I'm wrong, I really do but the loss of continuity in our side will I fear have a debilitating effect on the pitch this season as I feel it will take time for this side to bed down, something this league is not patient for. A clear sense of where we are going wouldn't be a bad idea either. If Les and Ralph what to create a Rupert Lowe wet dream of a club who's only ambition is to blood young talent and sell it for the highest bidder whilst maintaining a mediocre position in this league then be honest with the fans and say so.
I love this club but its rapidly becoming the worst girlfriend I ever had. It kisses me, tells me it wants all the things that I want but at the same time tarts itself on every dating site out there listing itself as single. Eventually I might come to my senses and waste my time elsewhere. |
