RC's poor statement - 27 April 2020 17:22 - Apr 27 with 1138 viewsdurham_exile

The U's supremo has announced that club captain Luke Prosser, Frank Nouble, Ryan Jackson and Brandon Comley, who were all due to see their contracts expire this summer, will not be retained.

In fairness he goes on to say that if circumstances change the decision will be reconsidered.

I am incandescent with rage given that no decision has been made regarding the way that the season will be completed and given that we still have a realistic chance of promotion.

Given our success in the League Cup which grossed £1M - i would suggest that the decision is premature and ill judged.

As disappointing as the news undoubtedly is, only Robbie knows the finances of the club. Like he said, many clubs will have to make similarly difficult decisions as he in the coming weeks. Personally I admire his commitment to paying the players under contract their full wages as that's what both parties signed up to, which is not what could be said of some PL clubs.

Durham - I, too am very disappointed with this statement when no decision has been made on the how this season will play out or be voided.

I understand the the need for the club to be financially safe but just think this statement is a little premature

Robbie states he expects other clubs to follow - what if they don't, we will immediately be at a disadvantage for the remainder of this season if played out and the next season?

I guarantee the next moan from supporters will be when the anouncement for season tickets is made especially if this season does not complete.

Regardless of the situation with COVID-19 Colchester must be in s stronger position than most league two clubs with the cup windfall.

I remain unconvinced by RC and his statement
I don't believe the club want promotion and even if they do by publically announcing that four players are not having their contracts renewed is only sending out negative signals.

Ryan Jackson will be a difficult player to replace. Brandon Comley was the most improved player this season and Luke Prosser and Tom Eastman were an effective defensive pairing. Big Frank always gave 100%.

This time next year we will be having the same conversation about Kwame Poku and others.

Grim times indeed.

I take it all four players contracts don't finish until 30th June. If that is the case then why say their contracts are not going to be renewed now. Especially as these players would be required if the 8th June starting date for football materialised. Normally the club would let players know early their contracts are not going to be renewed, so they can see about signing for another club, but that doesn't apply in this case because no clubs are going to think about signing players for next season until they know what is happening with football in the future.

I think this is a shocking business all round.

Premature announcement. A lack of ambition and a very negative situation.

Very disappointing.

I’m afraid I have to disagree Durham. We’re in the world of survival, as individuals and as companies right now. Expecting Robbie Cowling to bankroll our chances of play-offs that nobody has any realistic belief will happen by extending contracts for players we can’t afford I think is naive. Forget the cup run money, he subsidises a negative account every year, and probably needs every spare penny just to keep his own business going - and without Jobserve, we’re really f’cked. Not a happy decision to read, but 100% understandable in my opinion.

I am with Wessex on this one Cowling is a HR specialist. Nobody will better understand the legalities than he.

If players are out of contract it would be foolish to extend contracts in these extraordinary circumstances. Any extension is just increasing future potential liabilities if the club should fold as a result of this crisis and many are predicting clubs won't survive under existing ownership structures.

Nobody else is going to sign this group on a permanent n years basis for similar reasons. With the prospect of indefinite zero revenue Cowling has no other option else risk ploughing in £millions that he is guaranteed to lose in any outcome.

However, there is (I believe) nothing to stop the U's paying out of contract players on a per match/per week basis during whatever transition emerges. Then, when we know the future with greater certainty, he can recommence contract negotiations. It's not great for the players, but every reason that they will want to play (to get paid) and if possible secure promotion to best secure their futures.

I suspect Cowling is simply ahead of the curve being the shrewd businessman that he is. This crisis is going to shake the world of agents and football transfers and contracts to its core. The last to be hit will, of course, be stock exchange listed Premier League Clubs. I foresee clubs going under but then re-emerging as fan owned collectives. Isn't that what most of the "Cowling Out" brigade wanted?

Mr Cowling will always divide opinion. From my perspective it is because he often seems to be somewhat ambivalent towards us progressing, for others it may be because he came to us because seemingly West Ham - his first love - didn't want him. But in these times particularly I remain grateful for his support. The world is now different and will be slow to recover. This thing isn't finished yet and the impact on RC's businesses must be enormous.

No timing of his decision would have been great, but it will be bound to have been connected to what he knows and we don't as regards to his companies. The 4 players were also possibly some of the higher earners and maybe every little helps? I do believe many non lg clubs will fold and maybe one or two bigger ones so I have to agree with you Wessex, and the picture is bigger than I know.

As regards the four; Prosser has been good this year and I doubt Sowumni is a replacement though in time Kensdale may be. Frank is a lg 2 standard player who has not progressed this year, if anything the opposite. Fewer goals and has drifted in and out of games. Jackson is certainly good enough but has been less productive and may be slightly injured? Comley surprises me but management have underused him and he was dropped when playing at his peak mid winter, which was odd. He may well re-appear a league above like Mandron and others. Given that we will probably sell our left back Bramhall, I agree that this makes a big hole in our aspirations as supporters but I find it understandable given the way things are now.

Stay well - that's the main thing.

As always in tough times like now you have winners and loosers so let us hope RC is the former.
Football is going to have to make some drastic decisions as like many aspects of our life things are going to change and history will only show what decisions were correct.
Personally I doubt very much the season will be completed so very good luck for Southend and Bolton but I bet our friends up the road with debt of over £90 being carried by the owner and and a playing staff of thirty odd will have to make even tougher decisions.

The focus of Farmer Evans’s business empire is arranging business and sports events so no doubt being hit hard by the current situation.

Quite a unlikely situation regards those not retained. Most would have known before season end if clubs might reemploy under new contracts and all not given the opportunity to play in the shop window until end of season. Not the clubs fault, but players also have a sense of pride about finishing the job off and left in limbo, especially has the last game played was a convicing away win at the other end of the country, not knowing when season end and thereafter which clubs will recruit .
We wish them and there families well at a difficult time.
