Four Consecutive Away Days . 14:03 - Jan 29 with 887 viewsbwildered

Four consecutive away league wins. It’s the first time since the 1987/88 season that the team has achieved such a feat.
The victories were 2-1 at Newport, 1-0 at Wrexham, 1-0 at Cambridge and 4-1 at Rochdale . In fact it became five with another win at Halifax 2-1. The U’s slumped to only a 1-1- draw at Stockport next, but then added another two wins on the road at Tranmere 2-0 and Exeter 2-0 .
So seven wins in eight finally ended with a Bank Holiday defeat on the second day of 1988 at Peterborough.
Remarkably in this period the U’s had three managers, Mike Walker , caretaker Steve Foley and then the newly appointed Roger Brown .
Come the end of the season the away league record was a very reasonable won 9 , drew 5 and lost 9 . Alas only ten home wins put pay to any play off position .

With Grimsby up next - how many years since we won 5 consecutive away wins.

And how long since we travelled to Cleethorpes on a Saturday!

They've got to play three times before we play them!

Reading the original post it looks like we made it five the last time we made it four.

They will either be on a massive high or a massive low depending on their FA Cup replay and next round draw.
Whatever happens they are going to be knackered so it's a good time to play them.
It will be strange walking to the ground in the "daylight"!

Will be good to get there and back on the same day and not be viewing the match through evening sea fog. I don’t recall ever going there except on a Tuesday. Excellent fish & chips too. But don’t wander too far as it’s the second grottiest place in Britain (after Gillingham).

However, Grimsby is one of my favourite away days. Always an incredible welcome in the away fans bar and the lady host always gets in some bottled real ale, just for us, that she doesn’t put in the chiller. The bar is decorated by donated away fans scarfs and similar. Do note the Col U 50/50 ticket signed by Bingo (Paul Wright RIP) glued to the bar door/flap.

The Grimsby stewards are also full of common sense. The last time there the stewards, unprompted, escorted us to another terrace location so that we could see both goal mouths after fog had descended. On our previous visit, we arrived early and were not permitted in the home bar (fair enough) the turnstiles were not open, and the nearest friendly pub distant, so the stewards let us in through a side gate, walked us around the pitch, and the club opened up the away bar early. Our past good reputation is evidently recognised. It helps having such a fantastic team of Essex Footie Police (all closet U’s fans) that regularly travel away with us and who apply superb discretion and keep an sensible eye on our few idiots, ensuring that they don’t damage our reputation.

Five on the bounce is our record, 1987/88 and before that in 1938/39 and 1948/49.
