Legendary commentator John Motson, who had an illustrious 50-year career with the BBC, has died aged 77. Motson covered 10 World Cups, 10 European Championships and 29 FA Cup finals for BBC Sport before retiring from the organisation in 2018. Popularly known as 'Motty', he had worked on Match of the Day since 1971.
Sad news indeed, another iconic commentator sadly departed .
Remember it well, was standing at the Spion Kop end when it all kicked off near half time . A bottle miss my head by inches, several visitors tried to climb the fence before the local constabulary took action. A great game on the pitch, what a line up, young rooster was just making his way in the side and provided width, with on the opposite side Allison did the same, for Big Roy and Kev Bremner.
My father in law remembers it well as he was exchanging bottles with Sheffield Utd fans. He also remembers the huge punch up inside ground and the huge fight before match in High Street.

Home game had several skirmishes along Butt Red, with a pre and post match altercations outside the then Bay and Say. The three all draw was a FA Cup encounter several season later, with Stuart Hicks causing mayhem with foraging runs down the right side. The replay at Layer Rd the following Tuesday was soon over with the U’s going a goal down very early on and never got into the game .
Returning to Motty, although impartial, had a soft spot for the Tractorboys due to his links to Bury St Edmunds .
