Finally, good news at last. He has a tough start facing him at Bradford, so fingers crossed for the new manager boost!

Looks like he's not taking over until next week so is swerving the Bradford match and Embleton will remain in charge for that one. Always think it's a bit odd when a manager does that but maybe he had some commitments this week meaning he couldn't spend any time with the team before Saturday.

If Ben Garner is judged on what he did at Bristol Rovers and Charlton, this doesn't look like a good appointment. Though at Charlton he had to deal with basket case owners, and he only lost 8 out of 29 games.

What makes this a good appointment for me is his record at Swindon. He took over in the summer of 2021, when John McGreal walked away, and they only had seven players, and were under a transfer embargo. But by the end of the 2021/22 season he got them into the play-offs. They scored more goals, had more shots, more shots on target and more possession than any fourth tier side, in that campaign. My only concern is he likes to play a posseseion based game (that I am in favour of), but all our January signings were for Bloomfield's different style of playing.

So 1 season in League 2 and that finished with his team in the Play-Offs!

When was the last time we hired manager who had managed in the league above before coming to us? Boothroyd (Watford). Anyone else?

Be good if he could stay with us for more than a season, even if success does bring in bigger and better offers.

Always the optimist for a better season than the last and with a few more additions to the squad after trimming off the fat. I don't see why at Top 7 finish cannot be obtained!

C'mon the Boys!

Can't find any mention of his playing career.

Coaching career from a Bristol Rovers website:

"The early part of his career focused predominantly on working with the younger athletes that had signed with Crystal Palace, spending seven years as the primary youth coach at the Academy there.

Upon arriving in 2005 Garner was given control over the under 11 team at Crystal Palace. It didn’t take long until he found himself promoted to work with older players at the Academy until eventually, he found himself as the head coach of the under 18 team.

A number of the young athletes that he coached at gone on to have tremendous success in the world of professional football, including players like Victor Moses, Nathaniel Clyne, Jonny Williams, John Bostock, and more.

In 2012 Garner found himself a part of the primary club coaching team at Crystal Palace. Rovers legend, Ian Holloway (then manager at Selhurst Park) promoted him to this position, and Garner helped lead the team to a fifth-place finish in his first year coaching there. Winning promotion to the Premier League in 2013.

Over the next two years, Garner would remain as part of the coaching staff at Crystal Palace. Learning from the likes of Neil Warnock, Tony Pulis and Alan Pardew during his time with the South-London club. It was only in 2015 (with mutual consent from both sides) that Garner decided to leave the club to expand his professional prospects."

Is he the first manager for Col U that never had a playing career? Seems to be working fine for Will Still at Ligue 1 Reims!!!

Let’s not forget the U’s sacked a manager in four days, having not played a game. The club had appointed Ron Meades, after Jimmy Allen had left the club in May 1953.
Meades was appointed player/ manager, he had claimed to have played for Cardiff, but however when the local press asked there counterparts in Wales regards his history, ( no internet in those days), it emerged what he had claimed in his interview was incorrect .

I don’t know whether Ron Meades actually had any playing experience at all, but assuming he had some from somewhere, Ben would be the first manager with no playing experience. Ross Embleton runs him a close second, with only four appearances for Bedford, and Mick “Bigger etc” Wadsworth only played a few dozen times for Scunthorpe before injury ended his playing days - much to the dismay of clubs he’d go on to manage.
