The Summer of ‘24 - ins, outs and maybes 09:43 - Apr 28 with 81634 views | wessex_exile | As suggested on the matchday thread, let’s kick off the traditional summer transfer speculation. I’ll start with our current loanees. I doubt Palace would release Owen Goodman, and if they did, would we want him or even be able to afford him? Of the rest, I’d definitely like to see Alastair Smith and maybe Riley Harbottle sign if they were released. As for the rest, they’ll be heading back to make room for new choices.

The Summer of ‘24 - ins, outs and maybes on 10:36 - Apr 28 with 32939 views | CrashBandicoot | I agree with those and as for the contracts expiring I'd like to see: Staying: McGeehan, Chilvers and Cooper - McGeehan definitely, Chilvers is great when he's having a good game but needs more consistency and Cooper has lots of potential, Possibly Dallison as well but perhaps we need someone a little more consistent at the back? I feel the others need to move on - Hornby in favour of a more experienced keeper & Akinde has done well but is it currently in our best interests to keep a 35 year old striker or do we need a consistent goalscorer? The Cowleys obviously have a lot of time for big John, but he’s never going to be the instinctive prolific goal scorer we need. Nor I fear will Tom Hopper, but both bring much more to the team, even if scoring goals is literally their job. With his contract up, I suspect it’ll be head over heart and John will be let go, obviously with everyone’s best wishes and gratitude.

I absolutely agree with that, it is such a shame that big John isn't more of a consistent goalscorer as his all round play is very good. Hopper is very similar and is another very good player but again not a consistent goal scorer and I think he is contracted for another year (though he could be loaned out)

The Summer of ‘24 - ins, outs and maybes on 19:19 - Apr 28 with 32772 views | durham_exile | Would keep Chilvers and instil in him that the TV cameras will be there every week because he plays well on TV. Too early to make too many judgements for me but trust the Cowleys to get some important signings. I would sign Lakin from Sutton though. Alistair Smith is a must for me together with Edwards if he can ever get fit. Anderson too if fit. Kells of course. Mingi as well but this is asking a lot given the loan situation. Someone to replace Taylor and that is a big ask. Keep Tovide and Bradley. At 35 I think Big John is likely to move to Dagenham or someone similar. Lots to mull over. Up the U's

The Summer of ‘24 - ins, outs and maybes on 20:34 - Apr 28 with 32704 views | SparkfilmsTV | D&N quickly removed about five semi regular players from the squad when they arrived. They were already aware of short comings with some individuals. Of those five it is unlikely any of them will feature again for Colchester United. It was obvious to scouts and coaches of other clubs that Colchester had several weak areas over the pitch - this raises the question, why was this not obvious to the club? Finishing 22nd in this league is a disgrace and let's hope this is never repeated. Forest Green 5 Colchester United 0! Almost impossible to comprehend. I was always confident we would stay up but this was a close call. It's back to the drawing board for the club and l expect significant changes.

That is a superbly written piece by Glenn Speller. In particular his assessment of the Academy is interesting and l wonder if the club should take heed of his observations. There were a high number of young players who were released a few weeks ago - most of whom will be unfamiliar names and their release will go virtually unnoticed. Is the ambition of the Academy at Colchester United a realistic proposition for a club at our level? The proposed new site for the new training ground / Academy may be a cause for concern as this project is very much on hold and there are a number of difficult hurdles to overcome. Redevelopment of Florence Park is currently uncertain and the vision ( as l understand it ) is an even more expansive academy set up than we already have. It is my opinion that there is an acute 'business' imbalance in the set up of the club. The financial overheads at Colchester United should be reviewed and the burden to the current owner reduced. This is also an observation by individuals who specialise in football finance around the country who question the business model currently in place. On a more positive note, l think things will improve next season. | | | | Login to get fewer ads

Five semi regular players? Any idea who these are as I don't see it myself. Squad V Gillingham in January 1 Owen Goodman 3 Ellis Iandolo 5 Connor Hall 6 Tom Dallison 7 Matt Jay 10 Noah Chilvers 11 Owura Edwards 14 Tom Hopper 15 Zach Mitchell 16 Arthur Read 24 John Akinde 25 Joseph Taylor 29 Sam Hornby 30 Al-Amin Kazeem 33 Marley Marshall 37 Chay Cooper 42 Jayden Fevrier 48 Bradley Ihionvien Squad V Crewe Alexandra in April 1 Owen Goodman 3 Ellis Iandolo 4 Fiacre Kelleher 5 Connor Hall 7 Matt Jay 8 Conor Wilkinson 10 Noah Chilvers 13 Cameron McGeehan 14 Tom Hopper 16 Arthur Read 20 Jay Mingi 22 Riley Harbottle 24 John Akinde 26 Jayden Richardson 29 Sam Hornby 37 Chay Cooper 42 Jayden Fevrier 48 Bradley Ihionvien Of the 18 players listed in each 12 are in both squads. In January squad but not April squad: 6 Tom Dallison Suspended 11 Owura Edwards Injured 15 Zach Mitchell Loan ended? 25 Joseph Taylor Loan ended 30 Al-Amin Kazeem Loaned out 33 Marley Marshall Injured In April squad but not January squad: 4 Fiacre Kelleher Injured 8 Conor Wilkinson New Signing 13 Cameron McGeehan Suspended 20 Jay Mingi 22 Riley Harbottle Loan signing 26 Jayden Richardson Loan signing For the six players included in the January squad that were missing from the April squad it was impossible for nearly all of them to be included due to injuries, suspension or having left the club. For the six players included in the April squad that were missing from the January squad it was impossible for nearly all of them to be included due to injuries, suspension or not being at the club in January. When you look at the players that were available in both January and April it's literally the same squad. The only players that figured in either that appear to have gone anywhere in the time since the Cowley's arrived are Al-Amin Kazeem and Cooper, both loaned out. So I'd be really interested to know who these five players are. [Post edited 29 Apr 11:08]

As l understand it the Cowley's had watched Colchester United on several occasions before the New Year's Eve 'phone call' and had reservations about several positions. Suffice to say that three or four players haven't figured in their plans and a couple of others are unlikely to be involved next season. I still make it about five.
The Summer of ‘24 - ins, outs and maybes on 14:45 - Apr 29 with 32490 views | burnsieespana | Can really only think Greenidge and Smith both of whom seem to have totally disappeared. Zac Mitchell hasn't figured under the Cowley's if I am correct The hard one is Jay who hasn't really figured under 3/4 HC's as can't recall if he came in much before Bloomfield left. Kazeem on loan and Marley injured don't really count. To me the standout waste is Edwards who came injured and has remained so virtually all season. Can't think Dallison or Akinde will be offered new contracts. [Post edited 29 Apr 14:53]

I think Kazeem is likely one of the five. My info came from another club with links to D&C ( Chelmsford City 2 Braintree 3 😊😊 ).

I would say the five are Greenidge, Smith, Mitchell, Kazeem and Cooper. I would add Edwards to that list if he has not been injured for the last four months.

Smith, Kazeem and Cooper were barely figuring in the league. It was obvious he didn't fancy Greenidge or Mitchell as Richardson and Harbottle were brought in and went straight in the team. Mitchell was really the only regular starter out of that group though, and in my opinion a better player than Harbottle.

Only scored 1 in 28 League games last season (though that was in L1). We need someone a lot more prolific than that.

So was Matt Jay, but he hasn't quite worked out (yet?) Harry Pell has been released by AFC Wimbledon as well, but can't really see how he'd fit in back here - even if we wanted him, and he wanted to return.

And Gavin Massey released by Port Vale. Maybe we could sign a whole team of former players. Probably wouldn't be the youngest though.

Will take some persuading and a fair bit of cash I should imagine. I fully expect him to join another League One club after his release from Portsmouth. His relationship with the Cowley's might be enough to sway him and it would definitely be a move I would welcome though. From the article in the Colchester Gazette I don't think too many of last season's squad will be here next season, even the ones currently under contract.
