Top of the table clash Essex v Surrey.
Overnight first day our leading batsmen is taken ill and has operation on his appendix.
Rules apparently state that players can only be replaced with "possible" concussion symptoms.
So because our man had an emergency operation overnight this is not as serious as possible concussion?
For the rules to make us play against the league leaders without our best batter and ten men is disgraceful. Bet Surrey are having a good laugh.
Hopefully this very unfortunate situation will bring about a change in the law; too late for Essex though.

In the laws of cricket (not rules), a replacement fielder is allowed that cannot bat or bowl. Beyond that, as you state, only concussion substitutes are permitted, and that is a recent innovation.

There is a sensible reason for this because teams perform different functions in each innings. They will either be batting or bowling. Whilst there are inevitably all-rounders, most players either specialise in batting or bowling. In Rugby or Soccer you don’t have hugely different skill sets and hence less potential for skulduggery.

For example, what if a team required an extra batter to save a draw ,or an extra bowler to make bowling out a side more likely? Where a faster run rate is needed to win or not lose wickets to draw, a bowler that can’t bat well might be withdrawn feigning illness or injury and be replaced by a skilled batter. Cricket would have to become more like American Football with multiple substitutes, each with separately defined skills.

Yes, Essex are unfortunate losing a player due to appendicitis, but the integrity of the game would change if substitutes were allowed. There has been debate about having like for like replacements, but even if that was feasible in the professional game, it would be difficult in recreational cricket where one might need a batter, wicket keeper, spin bowler and seamer on the “bench”. It’s all a question of team resources and skill differences.

I’m like Indecisive Dave, off of the Fast Show.

I read Gerry’s post and totally agreed with him and then read Noah’s post and totally agreed with him!

Excellent explanation Noah.

Thanks Noah; understand your comments.
Strange though in 90 minute soccer five replacements are allowed.
In 4 day cricket, no changes allowed even in emergency, I e. appendix operation on a player who is top scorer in the division. Crazy!

Let’s imagine Essex were 180-8 In the final innings chasing an impossible 600 to win, but only need to bat for one more hour to secure a draw and obtain higher match points than for a defeat. Number 11, Jamie Porter (not a renowned batter) suddenly gets a severe migraine and drops out. A wicket then falls and instead of Porter, a top order batsman that has rushed from the Second XI fixture at nearby Billericay walks out to the crease as the substitute. How would that substitution be in the spirit of the game?

Cricket is a completely different game compared to the cheating skulduggery of soccer, where defenders might be withdrawn in the last minute of extra time to get better penalty takers on the pitch, whilst players feign injury to fool the referee into offering an unjust free kick etc. Cricket started to tread an unacceptable path when (example) the not out batter would go to the wrong end to protect an incoming bat after a catch. That brought about a law change.

The laws relating to runners supporting injured batters had to change after some exploited this by sending on their fastest sprinter, so that law had to change. Cricket is played by gentlemen that respect the laws. But I guess it won’t be long before somebody will get a level 2 caution for grabbing his crotch and gestering to the opposition.

Yep, common sense does not prevail in this instance, but however an update of the rules must be precise, otherwise ultimately clubs will take advantage of the situation for their own benefit in games.

There is one instance were a player can be replaced like for like, and that of international call up.
Paul Collingwood played against Essex for Durham several years ago, got a century and was called in to the England side in which a replacement was allowed.

Poll: No half measure either 1 or 2 ?

Yes, should a County player be called up for England mid-match he can be replaced. Similarly, that “call up” rule also applies should a County Second XI player be called up to the First XI. He then can be replaced in Second XI.

However, there is little scope for skulduggery, unlike the situation that might exist should a player feign injury to allow another with different skills to participate.

Sorry to disagree but if you can replace a player if called up to another team why not replace a player who is unfortunately unable to play. Its hardly a con to want to replace a player who has an operation overnight. He didn't actually have any involvement apart from fielding first innings. So because of a crazy rule we play with 10 men only when batting both innings and lose a player who is averaging 70+. And to add insult to injury we lose to Surrey by 140 runs.
Nuff said!

....from BBC Sport

"Second-placed Essex will be sore that they effectively had to play a vital top-of-table fixture with 10 men due to the absence virtually throughout of Jordan Cox, who left the field early on day one feeling unwell.

Cox has since had an operation to remove his appendix but ECB regulations allow a substitute only for concussion victims.

Perhaps Cox’s full involvement might have made little difference, particularly on a well-grassed pitch that encouraged the seamers throughout, but the 23-year-old came into the game heading Essex’s championship batting averages with 763 runs at 69.36."

Not just me who think it's unjust then?

Why didn't someone "give" him concussion?

Someone must have "put him out" for the operation.
