So, the single-game build up to the First Test starts, with an England XI taking on England Lions (shadow squad)

To give a flavour of where we're at (or where Stokes says we're at)...

I am down in Brisbane with a mate from here. It was quite emotional seeing him finally get that monkey of his back and the response was truly humbling…the entire ground erupted. I think everyone in the ground was willing him on for those last few runs, (unless David Warner was somewhere in the crowd).

The aussies, being the aussies, were not going to make those last few runs easy and when they brought Starc back on the jitters came back….for me but not for Joe.

it was an honour to be present …well done Joe…you did it were it counts most.

You're lucky to have witnessed that.

We're sending down some right tripe today, the bowlers are all over the place.

Our change bowlers - Carse and Stokes are bowlers of (occasional) great balls, rather than great bowlers and therefore tend not to be the most economical. Jacks is obviously not really that trusted with the ball and is a hedge your bets selection at 8.

Let's see if Archer and Atkinson can get the ball to talk under the floodlights.

We need to win the last session definitely, quick wickets required.

Badly need to take those last four wickets early tomorrow. A lead of anything above 100 would be too much psychological pressure on our batting order and we can't afford to lose this game, because we ain't coming back from 0-2 down

This is it then... all that planning, all those injuries fought and players identified, all of it comes to the crunch in the early hours, UK time

if we could have held the catches offered today, they would be all out and the scores would be about level. Smith, Carse and Duckett dropped easy chances. Root and Ducket had 2 more difficult chances, both dropped. Compare that with their catch for the last wicket today and the catch from their keeper yesterday.

Also no Australian dismissed for less than 20 so far. Almost all of them left deliveries for a couple of overs before starting to open up, and they have still scored at 5.5 an over today. compare that with our 4 ducks and another single figure score. A team with 1 very good bowler and basic application of batting and fielding are running rings around us. tough ask tomorrow but as you say if we can take the last 4, and concede a lead of about 100 we have a chance if we can apply ourselves in the second innings.

As for that second innings, there's one or two much-vaunted players who need a major reality check

Brook in particular, displaying all the staying power of a show pony

Pope, backed at no.3 but doing nothing to justify it, although he's been put in very early every innings so far
